Where San Diego cases are filed

The San Diego Superior Court has four divisions, Central, North County, East County and South County, and venue follows the court's ZIP Code list. Civil cases from the Central, East and South venues, limited and unlimited, are filed at the Hall of Justice, 330 West Broadway, Room 225. North County civil cases are filed at the North County Regional Center in Vista.

All unlawful detainer (eviction) cases and all small claims countywide go to the Hall of Justice, not the Central Courthouse building. Probate is filed at the Central Courthouse at 1100 Union Street, which also handles family, criminal and appeals; Vista has only a probate drop box. The Civil Business Office line is (619) 450-7275.

Business offices are open 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. on weekdays, and the court answers most phones from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Source: sdcourt.ca.gov court locations and where-to-file pages, checked October 28, 2026.

Do attorneys have to e-file in San Diego County?

Attorneys must e-file in San Diego civil cases. Local Rule 2.1.4 requires documents in all limited, unlimited and complex civil actions filed on or after April 15, 2021 to be filed electronically by attorneys representing a party, unless excused by ex parte application. Probate e-filing has been mandatory for attorneys since April 15, 2021. Self-represented parties are encouraged but not required to e-file. Coast, inland cities and the backcountry

The Census counted 3,298,634 San Diego County residents in 2020; the Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 is 3,282,248. The city of San Diego alone counted 1,386,932. Chula Vista (275,487), Oceanside (174,068) and Escondido (151,038) are next, with El Cajon as the gateway to the east county.

The backcountry east of El Cajon and Alpine is a different job from the coast. Mount Laguna counted 74 residents in 2020, Boulevard 359 and Jacumba 540. In places that small, a street address alone may not lead a server to the right door, and attempts can be far apart. Remote areas are subject to different timelines.

You can shorten the job with a good Letter of Instruction:

  • a physical description of the property, not just the mailing address
  • the cross street or nearest landmark
  • the person's vehicle, if known
  • a work address in El Cajon, Alpine or another town nearby
  • the hours someone is usually home

Weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., if 5–10 minutes go by without a reply, the phone number is 855-582-5776. Companies based in Carlsbad, San Diego or anywhere else are usually served through their agent for service of process. See serving corporations for the lookup and the alternatives.

Eviction complaints change in 2027

From January 1, 2027, an unlawful detainer complaint has to state how the termination notice was served, plus the date, time and location of service (Code of Civil Procedure § 1166(a)(5), as amended by AB 747). That detail comes from whoever served the notice. Details are in our AB 747 explainer. This is not legal advice.
