San Francisco is a consolidated city and county. One superior court covers the whole place, so the same court, and the same Service Request, cover both the city and the county. We run every San Francisco request from our Sacramento office, about 104 straight-line miles away, through a statewide network of experienced process servers and court runners.
A one-building county for civil work
For most civil practitioners, San Francisco comes down to one courthouse. The Judicial Council's data lists civil, probate, small claims and family filings all at the Civic Center Courthouse on McAllister Street. Criminal and traffic cases are at the Hall of Justice on Bryant Street, and juvenile matters are heard on Woodside Avenue.
Since October 19, 2026 the court's clerk's offices close at 12:30 p.m., much earlier than most California courts. Documents left in the drop box outside a clerk's office by 4 p.m. get that day's submission date, so a same-day filing is still possible in the afternoon, but not at the counter. Tell us your deadline on the request. Source: the court's clerk hours notice and location pages, checked October 29, 2026.
Do attorneys have to e-file in San Francisco?
San Francisco requires e-filing for civil case types, with exclusions the court lists on its e-filing page. Self-represented parties aren't subject to the mandatory rule. Checked October 2026.
That means most attorney filings in San Francisco civil cases go through an electronic filing service provider rather than the counter. We offer both: eFiling for documents that must or can go electronically, and in-person filing for the excluded documents and for filers who aren't required to e-file. See Court Filings for how to send a filing.
Small claims has its own self-help page on the court's site, at sf.courts.ca.gov/self-help/small-claims, and small claims cases are listed at the Civic Center Courthouse.
Apartments, condos and office floors
San Francisco had 873,965 residents in the 2020 Census and about 826,079 by the U.S. Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025. Many of the addresses we receive are apartments, condominiums and office floors, so the details on the request decide how fast a server gets to the right door. Distance matters less here than access.
In the Letter of Instruction, include:
- The complete street address with apartment, unit, suite or floor number
- Buzzer, lobby, concierge or front desk instructions you know about
- A work address as well as a home address, if you have both
- The best days and times to find the person, and a description or photo
- Any deadline or hearing date
If an address turns out to be stale, our skip tracing help looks for a current one so the next attempt goes to the right place.
What comes back after service
When a San Francisco summons is served, the proof goes on Judicial Council form POS-010, Proof of Service of Summons, which is adopted for mandatory use. Family law cases have their own proof form, FL-115, and small claims uses SC-104. The Judicial Council has proposed revisions to these forms for the 2027 service rules, so check that you're using the current version when you file. Checked October 2026.
Serving a company with a San Francisco office
A San Francisco street address doesn't tell you who can accept papers for a company. California corporations and LLCs name an agent for service of process with the Secretary of State, and that agent may sit in another county. Look the company up in bizfile Online first, then send us the agent's name and address. Our serving corporations guide explains the agent, officer and Secretary of State options.
