Carlsbad's lawsuits are filed close to home. The North County Regional Center at 325 South Melrose Drive, Vista, is about 4.5 miles from the city's center point in a straight line, and it takes Carlsbad's civil lawsuits and family cases. Serving a company with a Carlsbad address

When the party to serve is a business with a Carlsbad address, such as a company office, a contractor, a medical practice or a property manager, the right person to serve usually isn't at the reception desk.

California corporations must name an agent for service of process in their statement of information under Corporations Code § 1502, and LLCs must do the same under § 17701.13. The agent can be an officer, an employee or a registered agent company. Many companies use a commercial agent, and the agent's address may be in another county entirely. A statement of information can also go stale between filings, so check the filing date on bizfile and tell us if the entity's status shows as suspended or dissolved. The attorney may want to review that before the papers go out.

Before you send the request:

  1. Search bizfile Online for the exact entity name on your complaint. Note the entity number, status and agent.
  2. Check whether the agent is a registered agent company. If it is CSC or CT Corporation, see our pages on serving CSC Lawyers Incorporating Service and serving CT Corporation.
  3. Include the Carlsbad location anyway. If the agent has resigned or the listing is stale, the office address and the name of an officer give us a next step.
  4. Say who the defendant is, exactly. A parent company, a subsidiary and a dba can all share one Carlsbad suite.

When the agent can't be served, our serving corporations page walks through the alternatives. Our post on Secretary of State filing in California covers getting certified entity records if you need them for the case.

Carlsbad case types and their courthouses

Every Carlsbad ZIP is a North County ZIP on the court's Zip Code List (form ADM-254). That assignment controls most filings, and three local rules carve out the rest.

Case typeWhere a Carlsbad case is filedBasis
Unlimited and limited civilNorth County Regional Center, VistaZIP list; LR 1.2.2(E) folds only East and South into Central

The court's civil filing page frames venue around the party being sued: find the ZIP where that person or company lives or does business, or where the incident happened. A Carlsbad plaintiff suing someone in Chula Vista files where the defendant's ZIP points, not in Vista.

The North County civil business office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, according to the court's civil locations page, with many phones answered only in the morning. Checked October 2026.

Papers to serve in Carlsbad?

Civil harassment orders in Vista

A restraining order against a Carlsbad neighbor, roommate or stranger, someone with no close family or domestic relationship to you, is a civil harassment case, and it's filed at the North County Regional Center. The clock on filing day is strict. The court's civil locations page says a petitioner who wants the temporary order filed and heard by a judge that same day must be in line with completed paperwork by 3:00 p.m., citing CCP § 527.6(e). When the temporary order is granted, the court's restraining order page says it's usually issued the same day.

Then the respondent has to be personally served with all the papers the clerk lists, and the proof of service must be filed before or at the hearing. The Sheriff where the respondent lives or works can serve, and so can any adult who isn't a party to the case, which includes us. Since April 29, 2024, North County civil harassment matters have been heard in Department N-2, and the court posts that department's remote hearing links online.

To give the server time before the hearing, send the order, a photo and the respondent's usual schedule on the Service Request as soon as the clerk hands them back.

What goes in a Carlsbad civil service package

For a new limited or unlimited case, the summons and complaint aren't the only documents. San Diego local rule 2.1.4.1(A) requires the plaintiff, cross-complainant or petitioner to serve current copies of two court documents with the case-opening papers: the court's General Order on electronic filing and imaging, and the Electronic Filing Requirements form, CIV-409. The court's e-filing page repeats that duty.

Attorneys must also e-file the case. Local rule 2.1.4 makes it mandatory for attorneys in every limited, unlimited and complex civil action filed on or after April 15, 2021. Rule 2.1.4.1 adds formatting rules for those filings, including text-searchable PDFs and bookmarks for each exhibit.

So a typical Carlsbad package we receive contains:

  • the endorsed summons and complaint
  • the General Order and form CIV-409
  • any other papers the court or your office sends with the first filing

Upload them as PDFs, up to 5 per request, on the Service Request form. If we're filing the case too, we can do it in Vista by eFiling or with a court runner, then serve; see San Diego County court filing.

Small claims against Carlsbad businesses

A customer with a dispute against a Carlsbad shop or contractor files in small claims at the Hall of Justice, not in Vista. The court's small claims page puts the limit for individuals, including sole proprietors, at $12,500 as of January 1, 2024.

Service timing deserves attention. Local rule 2.4.4 says that when a small claims case is filed, the clerk gives the plaintiff a notice: if the defendant isn't served by the trial date and the plaintiff doesn't reset the hearing, the case will be dismissed without prejudice when it's called. A dismissed case has to be refiled, with a new filing fee. Resetting can be requested at the trial or earlier.

The plaintiff can't serve the claim personally, because Code of Civil Procedure § 414.10 requires a server who is at least 18 and not a party. For a business defendant, the same agent search described above applies, and we return the signed proof once service is done. General information only, not legal advice.

Carlsbad ZIP Codes

The Census matches four ZIP Code areas to Carlsbad, and the court's list adds two post office box ZIPs, 92013 and 92018.

These are straight lines from Census ZIP Code area points to each courthouse. For office parks and business centers, give us the building number and suite, and tell us whether the front desk signs visitors in. For a gated residential community, add the gate code or the guard house procedure. The updates come to you by email. Questions go to 855-582-5776 or Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.

Coastal and inland neighbors

Vista, home to the courthouse, is about 5 miles away. Oceanside, San Marcos, Encinitas and Solana Beach are all North County ZIPs that file civil cases in Vista too. Farther south, Del Mar is the exception on the coast: its 92014 ZIP is assigned to Central, so its civil and family cases go downtown. Other cities are on our San Diego County page.

Can you serve a company at its Carlsbad office instead of its registered agent?

Sometimes, but start with the agent. California corporations and LLCs name an agent for service of process in their Secretary of State filings under Corporations Code §§ 1502 and 17701.13. If the agent is a registered agent company, we serve it there. Send the Carlsbad office address too, in case the agent listing is out of date.

Where do I file a small claims case against a Carlsbad business?

At the Hall of Justice, 330 West Broadway in San Diego, about 29 miles from Carlsbad in a straight line. Local rule 2.4.4(A) places North County small claims in the Central Division. The court's small claims page sets the limit at $12,500 for individuals, including sole proprietors, since January 1, 2024.

What happens if the Carlsbad defendant isn't served before the small claims trial?

San Diego local rule 2.4.4 says the clerk warns the plaintiff at filing that if the defendant isn't served by the trial date and the plaintiff doesn't reset it, the case will be dismissed without prejudice. Refiling then means a new filing fee. Ask to reset at or before trial if service is still pending.

Is a Carlsbad construction defect case filed in Vista?

It can be. Local rule 1.2.2(F) says cases mainly about construction defect claims are filed in the Central or North County Division through the court's approved e-filing vendors, so a North County case may stay in Vista. Confirm the assignment on the court's civil Where to File page before filing. Checked October 2026.

Does Del Mar use the same courthouse as Carlsbad?

Not for civil and family cases. The Zip Code List assigns 92014 Del Mar to the Central Division, so those cases go downtown. Solana Beach (92075) and Encinitas (92024) are North County ZIPs, like Carlsbad's, and file in Vista.

How do I get from Carlsbad to the Vista courthouse?

The court's North County page gives directions from Interstate 5. Take Highway 78 east about seven miles, exit at Melrose Drive and turn right, then go about a quarter mile to County Complex Way and turn right into the parking lot. The public lot is in front of the courthouse.

Do I need to be in Carlsbad to send a request?

No. Valpro Attorney Services has no Carlsbad office. The request is handled from our Sacramento office, about 446 miles away in a straight line, and the papers are served at the Carlsbad address. Upload the PDFs online or email them, then get status updates by email.

Ready when you are.
