Our office is in Sacramento. San Jose, Palo Alto and Gilroy requests run through our statewide network of experienced process servers and court runners, with one point of contact for the whole job.

Downtown San Jose does most of the filing

Civil filing in Santa Clara County happens at one counter. The court's Local Civil Rules send every civil, unlawful detainer and small claims filing to the Downtown Superior Court at 191 North First Street in San Jose, which also takes probate. The Old Courthouse next door holds civil courtrooms only, so papers for a case heard there are still filed at Downtown. Family law and juvenile dependency are a block up at the Family Justice Center Courthouse.

Watch the Friday hours. Clerk's offices are open 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and close at noon on Fridays, so a Friday filing deadline is effectively a morning deadline at the counter. Put the deadline on your request and we'll plan the run around it.

Two more notes. The Santa Clara Courthouse on Homestead Road is temporarily closed with no services, and the court hasn't posted a reopening date. Criminal cases are heard at the Hall of Justice on West Hedding Street and at the Palo Alto and South County Morgan Hill courthouses. E-filing for attorneys

Attorneys e-file in Santa Clara County. Under Local General Rule 6.B(1), e-filing is mandatory for all attorney-represented parties in civil cases (complex, limited, unlimited, unlawful detainer and subsequent civil harassment filings), family and probate, and the rule also reaches juvenile dependency. A short list of documents is still taken on paper, such as abstracts, writs, out-of-state commissions and sister-state judgments.

Self-represented parties aren't required to e-file, small claims e-filing is optional and criminal e-filing is permissive. Filings go through the court's Odyssey eFileCA providers. Source: the court's e-filing page, checked Oct 28, 2026.

We e-file and file in person, so send the document either way and tell us the case number. Details are on our Court Filings page.

Where the addresses are

San Jose is the county seat and its largest city, with 1,013,240 residents in the 2020 Census. North of it are Sunnyvale (155,805), Santa Clara (127,647) and Mountain View (82,376). In the south county, Morgan Hill and Gilroy are the farthest cities from us; Gilroy is about 111 miles in a straight line from our Sacramento office.

Up in the hills, Mount Hamilton and New Almaden are unincorporated communities with no separate Census count. Holy City and Redwood Estates fall inside the Lexington Hills Census-designated place.

What affects service here

Santa Clara County had 1,936,259 residents in the 2020 Census and an estimated 1,914,391 on July 1, 2025 (Census Population Estimates, Vintage 2025). It's the largest county on our Bay Area list.

For an office-park address, give the building and suite, and tell us whether the person works on site or remotely. If the lobby is badge-controlled, a direct phone number or a reception contact helps.

The hill communities are the exception to the urban pattern. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, and an address in Mount Hamilton or New Almaden can need more detail than a street number. Add directions, gate or access details and a phone number for the property if you have one. If the address fails, skip tracing can look for a current one.

Serving a Santa Clara County company

Before you send papers to a headquarters address, look the company up in the Secretary of State's bizfile Online search for its agent for service of process. Serving that agent, or an officer the law names, is usually the cleanest path. Our serving corporations guide walks through the options.

Sending the request

Pick the service on the online Service Request, upload up to 5 PDFs, list every address and write the Letter of Instruction. You'll get a confirmation email, and every update comes in that thread. If you don't get a reply within 5–10 minutes during business hours (Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.), call or email us.

One more 2027 change worth knowing: a proof of service signed by someone who must register as a process server will have to show the registration number the county clerk assigned (CCP § 417.40, as AB 747 rewrites it). See how AB 747 changes service in 2027.
