What does document retrieval include?

We pull court records at the courthouse and deliver documents by messenger, with every update by email until they're delivered.

  • Court records pulled at the courthouse
  • Documents delivered by messenger
  • Email updates until the documents are delivered

What to send

With the request
What to pull, the court or office, the case number

Valpro Attorney Services retrieves court documents, handles copy work and makes related records requests for law firms and legal staff in California. We also run messenger deliveries of legal documents, with status updates and confirmation of completion. Send one Service Request with what you need and where it is.

What court records can you retrieve?

  • Filed pleadings, motions, orders and judgments from a superior court case file
  • Plain copies and certified copies from the clerk
  • Copies from older or archived case files the court has to locate
  • Related records requests that support your case, coordinated with the office that holds them
  • Business records on file with the California Secretary of State, through our Secretary of State filings service

Many courts post their case indexes and some documents online. When a court only releases a copy at the counter, or you need certified copies, a court runner goes to the clerk for you.

Messenger and courier delivery

Some documents have to reach a person or office by a set time but don't need formal service. We handle delivery and coordination of important legal documents, with status updates and confirmation of completion as applicable.

Examples:

  • Courtesy copies to a judge's department
  • Documents to opposing counsel or a co-counsel office
  • Signed originals between your office, a client and the court
  • Pickup of documents from one office for filing or service elsewhere

A delivery is not service of process. When the law requires a proof of service, send the papers through process serving so the server completes a proper proof.

Do I need retrieval or delivery?

Choose document retrieval for a copy of something in a court file and messenger delivery to get papers to a person or office. Papers that must be served on a party go through process serving, and documents for the court go through court filing.

What do I send for document retrieval?

For retrieval:

  • What to pull: document names or descriptions
  • The court or office and the courthouse location
  • The case number, or the party names and an approximate year
  • Plain or certified copies, and how many

For a delivery:

  • The pickup and drop-off street addresses, with suite, floor or department
  • The contact name at each end
  • The deadline and any building instructions

Attach up to 5 PDFs to the Service Request, or send the details to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. On a weekday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., you should hear from us within 5–10 minutes. If not, call 855-582-5776.

Choose Rush or Standard on the Service Request. Call 855-582-5776 to confirm timing for a same-day pickup or a delivery with a hard deadline.

How it works

  1. You send the Service Request with the case details or delivery addresses.
  2. We confirm receipt and check anything missing, such as a case number.
  3. A court runner or messenger from our statewide network makes the pull or the run.
  4. You get the copies, or the confirmation of delivery with the recipient's name and the time.

Every update on a pull or a run comes by email, in the same thread as your confirmation. To ask where it stands, reply to that email or write to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.

Courts we work with

We take retrieval requests for superior courts in all 58 California counties. County pages list each court's courthouses by case type, so you can tell us the right location:

If the document still needs to be filed, use Court Filings instead.

What do you need to pull a document from a court file?

The court and courthouse, the case number and the name or filing date of each document you want. If you only have the party names, send those and the approximate filing year and we'll look up the case number first. Tell us whether you need plain copies or certified copies.

Is a messenger delivery the same as service of process?

No. A delivery gets documents to a person or office, and we note who received them and when. Service of process follows the Code of Civil Procedure and ends with a proof of service the court can rely on. If the papers must be served, choose process serving instead.

Can you deliver documents to opposing counsel or a court department?

Yes. Give us the exact street address, suite or department, the contact name and any deadline. We deliver and confirm completion with the name of the person who accepted the documents and the time of delivery. Add building or check-in instructions to the Letter of Instruction.

Can you retrieve records from more than one court in one request?

Yes. List each court, case number and document in the Letter of Instruction. We coordinate the pulls through our statewide network of court runners and send everything back together or as each set comes in, whichever you prefer. Note any certified copies separately, because the clerk prepares those on its own schedule.

Their “standard” service request is other companies “rushes”. … As a legal secretary of multiple years, I can guarantee that as long as Valpro is in business, I will never go anywhere else.
