El Dorado County has two halves for anyone serving or filing papers: the West Slope, from El Dorado Hills up to Placerville, and the Tahoe Basin around South Lake Tahoe. Each has its own courthouses and its own sheriff civil office. Valpro Attorney Services works both, serving legal papers on people and businesses, filing with the El Dorado Superior Court by eFiling or in person, and pulling court records.
Send a Service Request online, or email the papers to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. Call 855-582-5776, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Process server for El Dorado Hills and the West Slope
El Dorado Hills is the county's largest community and the closest to us: 50,547 people in the 2020 Census and 24.6 miles straight-line from the Valpro Attorney Services office in Sacramento on W El Camino Ave. It's a Census-designated place rather than a city.
Placerville, the county seat, had 10,747 residents in 2020 and sits 38.5 miles from our office. Two court branches and the sheriff's main civil office are there. Across the basin, South Lake Tahoe had 21,330 residents and is 84.6 miles out, with its own branch courthouse and sheriff office. The county counted 191,185 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau estimates 192,323 for July 1, 2025.
Which branch takes your case
On the West Slope, the work splits three ways. Civil, small claims, unlawful detainer and probate go to the Cameron Park Branch. Family law, restraining orders, guardianships and juvenile dependency go to Building C on Fairlane Court in Placerville. Criminal matters are at the Main Street Branch. In the Tahoe Basin, the South Lake Tahoe Branch on Johnson Boulevard takes most case types. Every branch lists an after-hours drop box. Source: the court's location pages, checked October 2026.
Three recent changes are worth knowing:
- Cameron Park address. The court's page gives 2927 Meder Road. The Judicial Council's Find My Court data still lists an older Cameron Park Drive address. Use Meder Road on filings, maps and instructions.
- Fair Lane Branch closed. A court notice dated February 27, 2026 announced the closure of the Placerville Fair Lane Branch and the move of Department 8 to Building C.
- Main Street parking. There's no parking behind the Main Street courthouse. The court points to the city garage just west of it and city lots along Main Street. The building is secured, and visitors use the intercom at the rear door.
Small claims and self-help
Small claims cases are filed at the Cameron Park Branch for the West Slope or the South Lake Tahoe Branch for the basin. The Family Law Facilitator and Self-Help Center also gives small claims advisor help, at selfhelp@eldorado.courts.ca.gov or (530) 621-5098. In Placerville it's at Building C, in person Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. The court's small claims page still names the Main Street Branch for self-help, but its self-help page, updated October 26, 2026, names Building C.
Papers to serve in El Dorado County?
What are El Dorado County's e-filing rules?
Under Local Rule 7.08.00, the court accepts only electronically filed documents from represented parties and justice partners in civil, family law, probate and small claims matters. Self-represented parties are exempt under California Rules of Court, rule 2.250(b)(10). Source: eldorado.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.
The rules in force are dated January 1, 2026, and proposed revisions for 2027 are posted for public comment. For a represented party in those case types, plan on eFiling rather than the counter. We handle eFiling, and in-person filing for the cases that still allow paper. See Court Filings.
The sheriff's Civil Unit, West Slope and Tahoe
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office also serves civil process, though not small claims papers unless a court fee waiver comes with them, from two offices: 200 Industrial Drive in Placerville, (530) 621-5665, and 1360 Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe, (530) 573-3014. Both are open Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., closed for lunch 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. The Civil Unit takes service packets by email at edsocivil@eldoradosheriff.gov with Judicial Council form SER-001. Distance shapes the timing
El Dorado Hills is a short trip from our office. Placerville is farther up the foothills, and South Lake Tahoe is in the Tahoe Basin, so remote areas are subject to different timelines. We confirm timing for Tahoe Basin addresses once your request is in.
A strong Letter of Instruction for an El Dorado County address includes:
- Every address you have, including any gated-community entrance or lot number.
- Directions for rural parcels off private roads.
- Whether the address is a full-time residence or a second home, if you know.
- Days and times the person is usually there.

A 2027 rule for consumer debt cases
From January 1, 2027, in an action to collect a consumer debt, at least one service attempt must be made at the person's home, if it's known or can be found with reasonable effort (Code of Civil Procedure § 415.20(b)(3), as AB 747 rewrites it). For a second-home owner with a Tahoe address, that can mean finding the primary residence first. Read what AB 747 changes.
