Family law, probate and juvenile

Family and probate matters go to the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse at 3341 Power Inn Road. Its business hours are 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the building opens at 8:00 a.m. The Family Law Self-Help Center and the Family Law Facilitator are in Room 314. The center's hours are shorter than the counter's: 8:30 a.m.–noon Monday through Friday, and 1:30–4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Parking at Ridgeway is a paid city lot east of the courthouse. The court listed $2.00 for the first two hours, $1.00 for each hour after and an $8.00 daily maximum, payable at kiosks by coin or card or through ParkMobile zone 47681. Those are early-2026 rates, so check before you rely on them.

Juvenile dependency and juvenile justice cases are heard at the Juvenile Courthouse, 9605 Kiefer Boulevard, in Departments 90–97. Probate e-filing runs through the court's approved electronic filing service providers; the page we read doesn't say whether it's required, and we found no family law e-filing status. The Sheriff's Civil Bureau

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Civil Bureau also serves process. It sits at 2969 Prospect Park Drive, Suite 200, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670 (916-875-2665). Public counter hours are Monday 9:00–12:00, Tuesday through Thursday 9:00–3:00 and Friday 9:00–12:00. Registered process servers have their own window, Monday through Friday 6:00–9:00 a.m., and a drop box is open 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on weekdays.

A request to the sheriff goes on Judicial Council form SER-001. Any adult who isn't a party to the case can serve a summons (CCP § 414.10), so the sheriff and a private process server are both options. Source: sacsheriff.com Civil Bureau page, checked October 2026.

Papers to serve in Sacramento County?

A county of unincorporated communities

The county had 1,585,055 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau estimates 1,618,460 for July 1, 2025. About a third live in the city of Sacramento. The rest live in six other cities and a long list of Census-designated places with no city government.

Arden-Arcade, with 94,659 people in 2020, is larger than Folsom, Citrus Heights or Rancho Cordova, yet it has no city government. Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Orangevale, Antelope and North Highlands are in the same position. A summons served in Carmichael is served exactly like one in a city, so all we need is the street address and ZIP Code as the person uses it.

The largest city outside Sacramento is Elk Grove, with 176,124 residents in 2020, about 15 miles straight-line from our office. East of the city, Folsom and Rancho Cordova each passed 79,000. Arden-Arcade sits about 6 miles out, and Galt about 26 miles south.

The Delta

Hood, Courtland, Walnut Grove and Isleton run along the river south of the city. Locke and Ryde fall within the Walnut Grove Census-designated place. These are small places: Courtland had 326 residents in 2020 and Hood had 244. Isleton, the farthest, is about 32 miles straight-line from our office.

Remote areas are subject to different timelines. A cross street, a landmark or a parcel description in the Letter of Instruction helps the server find the right door on the first trip.

What helps a Sacramento County service go faster

  • Unit numbers. A large apartment community can have hundreds of units. A missing unit number costs an attempt.
  • Gate and lobby details. Some communities and subdivisions have gated entries. Tell us if you have a code or a contact.
  • A second address. A workplace in Rancho Cordova or downtown gives the server another place to try after a missed attempt at home.
  • The right name for a business. Look up the entity on bizfile Online before you send it. Our page on serving a corporation in California covers the agent for service of process.

Each request gets a confirmation email, and every update comes in that thread. If you don't get a reply within 5–10 minutes during business hours, call or email us.

Registration and the public register

California requires anyone who serves more than 10 papers a year for pay to register with the county clerk where they live or work (Business and Professions Code § 22350). Starting January 1, 2027, AB 747 requires each county clerk to keep that register of process servers publicly available (§ 22355(a)), so you'll be able to check a server's registration with the Sacramento County Clerk. See how AB 747 changes service of process in 2027. This is general information, not legal advice.

Across the county line

Work often crosses into Placer County to the northeast, El Dorado County to the east, Yolo County across the river and Solano County to the southwest.
