Anaheim requests are handled from our Sacramento office, 389 miles north in a straight line, and the papers are served at the Anaheim address you give us. You send the documents and the details online. The attempts, the proof of service and any filing that follows are handled as one request.

Most of what comes in for Anaheim is a summons, a subpoena or an eviction notice. All three end up tied to a courthouse in Santa Ana, which surprises people who assume the Fullerton building down the freeway is the local court. The sections below cover where Anaheim cases are heard, the service rules that apply before a hearing, and what to tell us so the first attempt has a fair chance.

Which court hears Anaheim civil and small claims cases?

Anaheim's civil, small claims and eviction cases all go to the Central Justice Center at 700 Civic Center Drive West in Santa Ana. The court's designation list, effective June 30, 2025 under Local Rule 365, assigns every Orange County city's limited civil, unlimited civil, small claims and unlawful detainer cases there. Fullerton's North Justice Center keeps only Anaheim's criminal and traffic work.

The two courthouses sit almost the same distance from the middle of Anaheim, which is why the mix-up happens. The North Justice Center's own page lists its civil hours as "Central Justice Center only" and gives a Santa Ana mailing address for its civil division. A filing walked into Fullerton for an Anaheim civil case is in the wrong building.

Dollar limits come from the court's civil filing page. Assignments come from the designation list. Both were checked in October 2026.

How many attempts does it take to serve someone in Anaheim?

California law doesn't set a fixed number of attempts today. Before papers can be left with another adult at a home (substituted service), the server has to try personal delivery with reasonable diligence (CCP § 415.20(b)). From January 1, 2027, AB 747 spells out one way to show it: good-faith attempts on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times.

What decides the count in practice is how much the server knows before the first visit. A person who leaves for work at 6 a.m. and gets back after 7 p.m. won't be found at noon, however many noons are tried. Give us the hours that fit the person's routine and the attempts can be spread across early mornings, evenings and different days of the week.

Service depends on the person being there to receive the papers. We make no guarantees for service. If an address keeps coming up empty, we tell you what was tried and when, and you decide whether to try a second address or look for a new one.

What should an Anaheim Letter of Instruction say?

Anaheim's seven Census ZIP Code areas are 92801, 92802, 92804, 92805, 92806, 92807 and 92808. They range from large apartment communities to single-family streets and commercial strips, and each needs different details from you.

For an apartment, the unit number is only half of it. Large complexes number their buildings separately, so add the building number or letter, and the leasing office's hours if the gate is controlled. For a house, mention a side gate, a dog, or a second unit at the back of the lot. For a workplace, give the employer's name, the person's shift and, if you know one, a supervisor who can bring the person to the front.

A photo or a short physical description saves an attempt where several adults share a home. So does a vehicle description and plate, because a car in the driveway tells the server someone is in.

If you or a friend already tried the address, put that in the Letter of Instruction too. "The neighbor said she works nights at a hospital" changes when the next attempt should happen.

Papers to serve in Anaheim?

Small claims deadlines for an Anaheim defendant

The court's small claims page sets the service deadlines by method. For a defendant inside Orange County, which every Anaheim address is:

  • Personal service: at least 15 days before the court date.
  • Substituted service: at least 25 days before the court date, because the papers are also mailed.
  • Proof of service: filed with the court at least 5 days before the hearing, usually on form SC-104.

The person who filed the claim can't serve it. Any adult who is at least 18 and not a party to the case can (CCP § 414.10). The clerk can also mail the claim by certified mail, but the court's own page warns that the defendant can refuse the letter or not be home to sign for it.

Count backward from the hearing date. If the hearing is less than a month out, a Standard request may not leave enough room for substituted service, so choose Rush and say so in the Letter of Instruction. All small claims filings for Orange County are processed at the Central Justice Center, so the case number on your claim will come from Santa Ana.

How do you serve a business in Anaheim?

A corporation or LLC is served through the agent for service of process it names in its filings with the Secretary of State (Corporations Code §§ 1502 and 17701.13). Look the entity up on bizfile Online and send us the agent's name and address with the papers. Our serving corporations page covers officers who can accept and companies based outside California.

A shop or contractor operating under a trade name is a different case. A fictitious business name statement is filed with the clerk in the county of the principal place of business, and the Orange County Clerk-Recorder lets you search filed names online. The statement shows who is behind the name, which tells you who the defendant is and who to serve. The Clerk-Recorder's North County Branch Office at 222 S. Harbor Blvd. in Anaheim takes these filings in person.

For a subpoena to a business's records custodian, our guide on how to serve a subpoena in California explains what goes with it.

Eviction papers for Anaheim rentals

Anaheim unlawful detainer cases are filed and heard at the Central Justice Center under the designation list, and the court publishes its own Local Rule 356 and local forms for them. Serving a tenant follows the usual methods. Posting the summons on the door is allowed only with a court order, after the court is satisfied that reasonable diligence failed (CCP § 415.45).

From January 1, 2027, the eviction complaint itself must state the date, time and location the termination notice was served (CCP § 1166(a)(5)). Ask whoever serves the notice to record all three. This is general information, not legal advice.

Filing an Anaheim case at Central

Represented parties must e-file in limited, unlimited and complex civil cases under the court's Local Rule 352, unless excused. Self-represented parties can still file in person at the Civil Clerk's Division on the first floor of the Central Justice Center, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We do both: eFiling, or a court runner at the counter. Add the filing to the same Service Request, and once the summons is issued it goes straight out for service. Details are on our Orange County court filing page.

When the Anaheim address is out of date

An address from an old lease or a years-old judgment often fails. If the server learns the person moved, ask about skip tracing. We look for a current address, send it to you, and with your approval the papers go back out on the same request, with every update in the same email thread. Our article on finding a defendant in California explains what helps.

Cities around Anaheim

Many Anaheim cases involve a second address next door. Yorba Linda, Placentia, Orange, Villa Park and Fullerton are all next to Anaheim, and we serve each of them. The rest of the county is on our Orange County page. When you're ready, send the papers through the Service Request form.

Does the North Justice Center in Fullerton take Anaheim civil cases?

No. The court's designation list, effective June 30, 2025, sends Anaheim's limited civil, unlimited civil, small claims and unlawful detainer cases to the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana. Fullerton's North Justice Center hears Anaheim's criminal and traffic matters only, and its own page lists civil counter hours as Central Justice Center only.

How many times will a process server try an Anaheim address?

California law doesn't set a number today. Substituted service on a person requires reasonable diligence first (CCP § 415.20(b)). From January 1, 2027, AB 747 says that diligence is shown by good-faith attempts on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times. Tell us the hours the person is usually home so the attempts count.

How close to the hearing can I serve an Anaheim small claims defendant?

The Orange County court's small claims page says personal service must happen at least 15 days before the court date, and substituted service at least 25 days before. Those numbers are for a defendant inside Orange County, which an Anaheim address is. The signed proof of service has to be filed at least 5 days before the hearing.

Where do I file an Anaheim small claims case in person?

At the Central Justice Center, 700 Civic Center Drive West, Santa Ana. The designation list says all small claims filings are processed there, whatever city the parties are in. The court's page lists Civil and Small Claims counter hours of Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Checked October 2026.

Who do I serve if an Anaheim shop operates under a business name?

Find out who owns the name first. A fictitious business name statement is filed with the county clerk where the business is based, and the Orange County Clerk-Recorder offers an online search. The statement names the owner or the company behind the name. A corporation or LLC is served through its agent for service of process.

Can a tenant in Anaheim be served by posting the summons on the door?

Only with a court order. In an unlawful detainer case, CCP § 415.45 allows posting when the court is satisfied, by affidavit, that the tenant can't be served another way with reasonable diligence. Anaheim eviction cases are heard at the Central Justice Center, so that is where the application goes.
