Oakland is the seat of Alameda County, with 440,646 residents at the 2020 Census, and its main civil courthouse sits on Fallon Street beside Lake Merritt. We serve summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document on people and businesses anywhere in the city.

We work from our Sacramento office and keep no Oakland location. A request starts online or by email, and you can get every update by email.

How do I get papers served in Oakland?

Upload the documents to a Service Request, name the person or company, list each Oakland address you know and choose Rush or Standard. Add a Letter of Instruction with times and access details. We make the attempts, and the completed proof of service comes back to you for filing.

What a good Oakland request includes:

  1. The papers as PDFs. Up to 5 files per request: summons, complaint, civil case cover sheet, notice of hearing, or a subpoena and its attachments.
  2. The exact name. For a business, copy the entity name from its Secretary of State record, not the sign on the building.
  3. Each address, best first. A home in the Laurel district and a job downtown give two different windows.
  4. Access notes. Building entry, a unit or suite, a gate on a hillside driveway, a car, a photo, the hours they keep.
  5. Your Billing Reference, if your office tracks matters that way.

If no reply reaches you within business hours, call 855-582-5776 or write to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.

Which courthouse handles an Oakland case?

Civil filings for Oakland matters go to the René C. Davidson Courthouse at 1225 Fallon Street or to the Hayward Hall of Justice. Several Oakland case types still end up outside the city: evictions and small claims hearings sit in Hayward, family law files there too, and probate files only in Berkeley.

The Davidson civil clerk is open in person Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. and Friday until 2:00 p.m. After the window closes, the drop box runs until 4:00 p.m. Probate papers must reach Berkeley no later than two court days before the hearing, by the court's own rule on its probate page.

What should a court runner know about Fallon Street?

The court calls parking near Davidson limited and expensive. Its page says the Alcopark garage at 165 13th Street, entered from Jackson Street, is often full before 8 a.m. Lake Merritt BART is about a four-minute walk. Allow for that when a filing has to beat the 3:00 p.m. window, or 2:00 p.m. on a Friday.

The court also takes online Clerk's Office appointments at Davidson, with a category set aside for court runner filings, plus slots for new complaints, answers, name changes and small claims. An appointment is optional, but it skips the line when a filing has to go in that day.

We take Oakland filings either way: at the counter or the drop box, or through eFiling. Our Alameda County court filing page covers the countywide details, and Court Filings covers other California courts.

Do attorneys have to e-file Oakland civil cases?

Yes. The court's e-filing FAQ says litigants represented by attorneys must e-file in all civil cases as of January 1, 2022, under Local Rule 3.27. That includes unlawful detainer, small claims, civil harassment and civil appeals. Self-represented litigants are encouraged to e-file but don't have to.

A short list of documents stays on paper. The court names bench warrants, subpoenaed documents, bonds, undertakings, certified judgments, out-of-state or out-of-county abstracts or commissions, sister-state judgments, subpoenas for out-of-state actions and payee data records. Those go to a Clerk's Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., or by mail.

Two practical notes from the same pages. A motion needs a hearing reservation through the Court Reservation System in the eCourt Public Portal before you e-file it, or the filing is rejected. And civil e-filing goes down after midnight on the fourth Friday of each month until noon Saturday for maintenance. Checked October 2026.

Papers to serve in Oakland?

Which Oakland addresses need extra detail?

Oakland overlaps 16 Census ZIP Code areas, most numbered between 94601 and 94621, plus 94705, and the building type changes from one block to the next. Downtown towers, flats along the estuary and hillside homes each call for different notes in the Letter of Instruction.

  • Downtown and Lake Merritt high-rises. Lobby desks and fob-only elevators are normal. Give the unit, the name on the buzzer and the leasing office if you have it.
  • The Oakland Hills. Montclair and the streets above Skyline Boulevard wind, and house numbers can be hard to see from the road. A cross street or a photo of the house helps.
  • West Oakland and the waterfront. Warehouses, live-work lofts and port businesses near the Oakland seaport often have one public door and a separate loading entrance. Say which entrance the person uses.
  • Shared ZIP Code areas. 94705 crosses into Berkeley, and 94608 into Emeryville. Piedmont, a separate city inside Oakland, shares 94610 and 94611.

These ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes, from the 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file. The Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate for Oakland is 440,838 residents.

How do I serve a business in Oakland?

Serve the company's agent for service of process. California corporations and LLCs name that agent in their Secretary of State filings (Corporations Code §§ 1502(b) and 17701.13), and bizfile Online shows the name and address. Send us the agent details with the papers, and say whether a named officer should be tried as well.

Under CCP § 416.10, a corporation can also be served through an officer such as the president, the secretary or a general manager. A front desk clerk at an Oakland storefront usually isn't one of those people. Many companies with Oakland offices list a commercial registered agent, and that agent's office may sit in another city. Our guide to serving corporations in California covers each route, including court-ordered service through the Secretary of State.

Oakland or San Francisco: which court?

They are separate counties with separate courts. A party who lives in Oakland can be served in Oakland for a case filed in San Francisco, Sacramento or anywhere else in California. What matters for service is where the person is. The court only matters for filing.

If the case belongs in San Francisco Superior Court, see our San Francisco County page. For Alameda County cases across the bay side of the county, see Hayward and Fremont.

How will AB 747 change Oakland service in 2027?

From January 1, 2027, the diligence needed before substituted service is shown by tries at personal delivery on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Each proof of personal, substituted or posted service will need a photo of each attempt with an automatic date, time and GPS stamp (CCP § 417.10(a)(1)).

For an Oakland defendant who commutes across the bay, that means early, midday and evening tries spread over a week, or a workplace address as a second option. The full list is in our AB 747 guide. This is general information, not legal advice. We make no guarantees for service.

What if the person has left Oakland?

Ask about skip tracing. Tell us the last address you have, an employer, a phone number or a relative in the area. We look for a current address, send it to you, and with your approval the papers go back out for service. Our post on finding a defendant in California lists what helps.

For copies from an existing Oakland case file, such as a judgment or an earlier proof, use document retrieval.
