How do I get papers served in Sacramento?
Send us the documents, the name of the person or business to serve and every Sacramento address you have, plus a Letter of Instruction with the best times to find them. Choose Rush or Standard. We assign the request, make the attempts and return the proof of service. You can get each update by email.
- Start a Service Request. Pick Process Service, upload the papers (up to 5 PDFs) and add your Billing Reference if your office uses one.
- Tell us who and where. Full name or business name, street address with the apartment, suite or unit number, and a second address such as a workplace if you have one.
- Write the Letter of Instruction. Hours they're usually home, a description or photo, a gate or lobby code, a vehicle, anything that saves an attempt.
- Watch your inbox. Every status update comes in the same email thread. If you have a question, reply to it.
- Get the proof back. Once service is complete, the proof of service comes back to you to file with the court.
Sacramento addresses: what to put in the Letter of Instruction
The city covers 19 Census ZIP Code areas, from Natomas in the north to the Pocket and Meadowview in the south. Each kind of address needs different details, and the details are what decide how many attempts it takes.
- Apartments and condos. Give the building and unit number. Large complexes have several entrances, so a building letter or a parking area saves a lap.
- Downtown and Midtown office buildings. Name the company, the floor and the suite. Many towers check visitors at a lobby desk, so a direct phone number for the person or a reception contact helps.
- Homes. Note any dog, side gate or second unit on the lot, and when the person usually leaves for work.
- Gated communities and mobile home parks. Give the gate code if you have one, or the name of the manager's office, so the server can get in without waiting for a resident.
- Workplaces. A shift schedule, a break time or a supervisor's name turns a workplace into a strong second address.
If you've already tried an address yourself, tell us what happened there. A note like "the roommate said he moved out in June" changes the plan.
Sacramento cases and the right proof of service
Where your case was filed decides which proof of service form usually comes back with the papers. The Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento, splits its case types across buildings, and the proof forms follow the case type, not the building.
- Civil cases at 500 G Street. Civil filing moved to the new Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse, 2nd floor, on April 13, 2026. A summons in a civil case is proved on Judicial Council form POS-010, which is mandatory for that use.
- Family law at the Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse, 3341 Power Inn Road. A family law summons is usually proved on FL-115.
- Small claims at the Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle. Small claims papers are usually proved on SC-104. The building is open Monday through Thursday and closed Fridays.
Forms checked October 2026 at courts.ca.gov. The Judicial Council's record lists new versions of POS-010, FL-115 and SC-104 as passed on October 16, 2026, effective January 1, 2027, so check the date on the form. Court locations come from archived copies of saccourt.ca.gov pages dated March–June 2026, because the court's live site blocks automated reading.
Papers to serve in Sacramento?
When does service count, and when does the clock start?
The 30-day response period on a California civil summons runs from the date service is complete (CCP § 412.20(a)(3)). That date depends on how the papers were served, so it matters when you calendar the response deadline or a default.
- Personal service is complete the moment the papers are handed over (CCP § 415.10).
- Substituted service at a home or office is complete on the 10th day after the follow-up copy is mailed (CCP § 415.20).
- Notice and acknowledgment by mail counts on the date the person signs the acknowledgment (CCP § 415.30). If it never comes back, the papers still need to be served another way.
When a hearing date is set, count backward from the day service will be complete, not from the day the papers go out. We note the date, time and method on the proof of service, so the completion date is clear from the paperwork. Statutes checked October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do you serve a business in Sacramento?
California corporations and LLCs must name an agent for service of process in their filings with the Secretary of State (Corporations Code §§ 1502(b) and 17701.13). Look the entity up on bizfile Online, then send us the agent's name and address with the papers. If the agent is a registered agent company, we deliver to a person that company has authorized at its office.
When an agent can't be found with reasonable diligence, the court can order service through the Secretary of State. That service is accepted only by hand at the Sacramento counter, 1500 11th Street, 3rd floor, Room 390, Mon–Fri 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with the court order and a $50 fee. Mail isn't accepted, and the Los Angeles office doesn't take it. Source: sos.ca.gov service of process page, checked October 2026.
Our guide to serving a corporation in California walks through every method, including officers who can accept and companies based outside California.
Small claims and eviction papers in Sacramento
People handling a small claims case often ask whether they can serve the other side themselves. They can't: a summons may be served by any adult who is at least 18 and not a party to the case (CCP § 414.10). A friend, the sheriff or a process server can do it, and the server signs the proof.
Small claims cases and eviction (unlawful detainer) cases up to $35,000 are heard at the Carol Miller Justice Center, which also houses the court's Small Claims Advisory Clinic. For landlords, one 2027 change is worth knowing now. From January 1, 2027, an eviction complaint must state the date, time and location the termination notice was served (CCP § 1166(a)(5), operative January 1, 2027). Ask whoever serves the notice to record all three.
For the filing side, including the counter, the drop box and e-filing, see our Sacramento County court filing guide.
Can you file and serve on the same request?
Many Sacramento cases need both. We file the complaint at 500 G Street in person or by eFiling, and once the court issues the summons, the papers can go straight out for service. Civil e-filing in Sacramento is optional for all parties, according to the court's e-filing page as of July 2026, so we use whichever method suits the filing. Tell us both steps in the Letter of Instruction.
When the address doesn't work
An address from an old lease, a credit application or a years-old court file can be stale. If the server finds the person gone, ask about skip tracing. We research a current address, send it to you, and with your OK the papers go back out. It stays the same request, and every update stays in one email thread.
Beyond the city limits
Neighboring communities such as Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, North Highlands, Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova are served the same way. Across the river, Davis and the rest of Yolo County are close by, as are Placer County and El Dorado County. Every other city in the county is listed on our Sacramento County page.
