Valpro Attorney Services is a Mountain View process server for attorneys, landlords, businesses and people handling their own cases. We serve summonses, complaints, subpoenas, family law papers, eviction papers and small claims at Mountain View homes, apartment communities and workplaces. The city counted 82,376 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau's estimate for July 2025 is 85,438.
We do this from Sacramento, with no Mountain View office. Papers arrive as PDFs through a Service Request, and you can get each update by email.
Why Mountain View filings go to San Jose
Mountain View's nearest courthouse is the Palo Alto Courthouse at 270 Grant Avenue, about 3.9 miles from the center of the city in a straight line. It's a criminal court. The court lists only criminal cases there, in Departments 84 through 89, and its round-the-clock outside drop box serves that work.
Civil matters travel about 11 miles to downtown San Jose. Santa Clara County's local rules leave no choice of courthouse:
| Mountain View matter | Filed at | Rule or court page |
|---|---|---|
| Civil, limited and unlimited | Downtown Superior Court, 191 North First Street | Local Civil Rule 1.C |
| Unlawful detainer | Downtown Superior Court | Local Civil Rule 13.C |
| Small claims (filed and heard) | Downtown Superior Court | Local Civil Rule 19.A |
| Probate, conservatorship, guardianship | Probate Clerk's Office, Room 107, Downtown Superior Court | Probate court location page |
| Family law | Family Justice Center Courthouse, 201 North First Street | FJCC location page |
| Criminal | Palo Alto Courthouse or San Jose | Palo Alto location page |
Civil trials and hearings are split between Downtown Superior Court and the Old Courthouse at 161 North First Street, which holds civil Departments 17 through 22, where cases are heard but not filed. The court's list of courthouses also shows a Santa Clara Courthouse marked temporarily closed. San Jose's clerk's offices and phones run Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and close at noon on Friday. The Downtown lobby drop box takes civil documents from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Court facts checked October 2026 at santaclara.courts.ca.gov.
The notice that has to travel with the complaint
Santa Clara County adds one piece of paper to every new civil case, and it lands on the process server. Under Local Civil Rule 1.D, the plaintiff brings a blank Civil Lawsuit Notice, form CV-5012, when the complaint is filed. The clerk fills in the assigned judge, the department and the first hearing date, but only if the filer supplies the form.
The plaintiff must then serve that completed notice on every other named party, and service has to happen at the same time as service of the complaint. A party who later adds a defendant serves the notice on the new party too. If the first case management conference has been continued or has already passed, the server's copy has to show the next conference date. Collections cases designated under Rule 3.740 use a different version, form CV-5052.
For a Mountain View defendant, send all of it in one Service Request: summons, complaint, cover sheet if you want it served, and the clerk-completed CV-5012. We serve the set together, and the proof of service lists each document.
Mountain View evictions in the county's eviction department
Every Santa Clara County unlawful detainer starts at Downtown Superior Court and is assigned to the department the Presiding Judge designates for evictions. For a Mountain View landlord or property manager, a few parts of Rule 13 shape the calendar:
- Stays of eviction and stipulated judgments are presented in person at the clerk's office during regular hours; the clerk then sends the applicant to the right department. Other ex parte applications are e-filed.
- Noticed motions and post-judgment claims of right to possession are heard at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
- Court trials start at 8:45 a.m. on the same three days, while jury trials go to any open department in the building.
E-filing is mandatory in unlawful detainer cases for parties with attorneys, according to the court's e-filing page. A landlord without one can still file on paper.
If adults who aren't named in the complaint may live in the unit, ask your attorney whether to serve a Prejudgment Claim of Right to Possession with the summons. Starting January 1, 2027, before an eviction summons can be posted, diligence is shown by attempts on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times (CCP § 415.45). Our AB 747 guide covers it. This is general information, not legal advice.
Papers to serve in Mountain View?
Subpoenas for out-of-state cases
A Mountain View witness or records custodian is sometimes needed in a lawsuit pending in another state. A subpoena from that court has to be reissued in California before it's served here. California's Interstate and International Depositions and Discovery Act, Code of Civil Procedure sections 2029.100 through 2029.900, routes them through the superior court of the county where the discovery will take place.
The Judicial Council's form SUBP-030, Application for Discovery Subpoena in Action Pending Outside California, is the usual starting point. The applicant attaches the out-of-state court's document and submits a proposed California subpoena with identical terms (CCP § 2029.300(d)). For a Mountain View deponent, that means the Santa Clara County court. Its e-filing page lists the local form for out-of-state subpoenas among documents still accepted on paper.
Once the clerk issues the subpoena, upload it with the original out-of-state paper and any witness fee check, and we serve the witness or the custodian. Our post on serving a subpoena in California covers fees and timing. We can also take the application to the San Jose counter through Santa Clara County court filings.
Small claims for a Mountain View dispute
A Mountain View small claims case is filed and heard at Downtown Superior Court when the defendant lives in the county, or the contract or injury is tied to it. The court's small claims page sets the individual limit at $12,500, and it repeats a statewide rule that trips up repeat filers: no one may file more than two small claims for over $2,500 anywhere in California in a calendar year. Smaller claims aren't capped.
Small claims e-filing is available in Santa Clara County but optional. Whichever way the claim is filed, the issued claim still has to be served on the defendant before the hearing. Upload it with every page the clerk returned, including any local notice, and tell us the hearing date.
Three ZIP Code areas, mostly Mountain View
The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file matches three ZIP Code areas to Mountain View:
- 94041 lies entirely inside the city.
- 94040 is about 99.7% Mountain View by land, with a sliver in Los Altos.
- 94043, the north side toward the bay, is about 72% Mountain View. About 28% of its land is outside any city or Census-designated place, and tiny pieces fall in Palo Alto and Sunnyvale.
All three areas are wholly in Santa Clara County, so none of them changes the court. They can change which city's rules apply to a lease or a permit dispute, so send the address exactly as the papers state it. ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes.
Serving at a Mountain View workplace
Many people in Mountain View work in office and research campuses with a lobby desk, badge readers and security staff. A server can ask for a person at reception but can't walk the halls. Details that make a workplace attempt worth making:
- Which building. A campus address may cover several buildings; give the building number or name and the floor.
- Who to ask for. The person's team, manager or an assistant who can bring them down.
- When they're on site. Hybrid schedules mean some people come in only on certain days.
- A home address as backup. Evenings and weekends at home often work better than a lobby.
Papers aimed at the company itself go to its agent for service of process, listed on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online, not to a campus front desk. Large employers often name a commercial agent; see how we serve CSC Lawyers Incorporating Service and CT Corporation, or read the general serving corporations guide.
Sending Mountain View papers
- Start a Service Request and upload up to 5 PDFs, including the CV-5012 notice for a new civil case.
- Name each party exactly as the caption does.
- Add the home address, the unit or building, and a workplace if you have one.
- Choose Rush or Standard, and add a San Jose filing if the case still needs one.
Call 855-582-5776 or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com with questions. We make no guarantees for service. If the person has moved, our skip tracing service looks for a current address, and document retrieval gets copies out of an existing court file.
