Sunnyvale is the second-largest city in Santa Clara County after San Jose by 2020 Census count, with 155,805 residents, and the Census Bureau estimates 156,577 for July 1, 2025. Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document on Sunnyvale residents and the businesses that operate there.
All of it starts online from our Sacramento office, about 90 miles north in a straight line. Upload the papers, name the party and the address, and the request gets a number you can look up at any hour.
The closest courthouse won't take your Sunnyvale civil case
From central Sunnyvale, the Palo Alto Courthouse at 270 Grant Avenue is about 7 miles away in a straight line, a little closer than downtown San Jose. It hears criminal cases only, in Departments 84 to 89. Its outside drop box is open around the clock, but the court's local rules route civil work elsewhere.
Every civil filing for a Sunnyvale matter goes to Downtown Superior Court at 191 North First Street in San Jose, about 8 miles from central Sunnyvale:
- Limited and unlimited civil cases must be filed there under Local Civil Rule 1.C. The court's civil page puts the dividing line at $35,000.
- Unlawful detainer cases must be filed there under Local Civil Rule 13.C.
- Small claims are filed and heard there under Local Civil Rule 19.A.
- Probate is handled at the same building.
- Family law goes next door to the Family Justice Center Courthouse at 201 North First Street.
The San Jose clerk's offices take filings and calls Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Friday until noon. Court facts checked October 2026 at santaclara.courts.ca.gov.
Sunnyvale rentals and eviction cases
For landlords and property managers with Sunnyvale units, the county keeps evictions in one place: Rule 13.D assigns every unlawful detainer case to a single department chosen by the Presiding Judge, at Downtown Superior Court.
Points from the local rules that affect service and timing:
- Trial and motion days. Court trials start at 8:45 a.m. and noticed motions at 9:15 a.m., on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
- In-person ex parte items. Applications for judgment by stipulation and for a stay of eviction go to the clerk's office in person; other ex parte applications are e-filed.
- Trial setting. If no one files a request to set the case for trial (form UD-150) within 60 days of the complaint, the court may dismiss on its own motion.
- The local notice. Rule 13.I tells plaintiffs to serve the Landlord/Tenant Assistance Programs Notice (CV-5102) with the summons and complaint. It carries a sunset tied to the end of those programs, so check with the court before filing.
E-filing is mandatory for attorney-represented parties in unlawful detainer cases, according to the court's e-filing page. A landlord without a lawyer may still file on paper.
Starting January 1, 2027, AB 747 adds a diligence step for eviction cases. Before an unlawful detainer summons can be posted, diligence will be shown the same way, by attempts on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times, with one at the home unless an exception applies (CCP § 415.45). Our AB 747 guide has the details. This is general information, not legal advice.
Building a Sunnyvale Service Request
Sunnyvale addresses tend to be apartment communities, townhome complexes, single-family streets and office or research campuses. What the server needs differs for each, so the Letter of Instruction does most of the work.
- Attach the papers. Up to 5 PDFs. For an eviction, include every page the court issued plus any local notice.
- Say who. The tenant's or defendant's full name, and every adult named in the case if more than one person must be served.
- Say where. The street address with building and unit number. For a complex, the leasing office name or the building letter helps.
- Say when. Work hours, school drop-off times, days off. A weekday 7 p.m. try often beats a 2 p.m. one.
- Choose Rush or Standard. For a hearing that's already set, tell us the date.
Open a Service Request to begin. You'll see every update comes by email, with the proof of service to follow.
Papers to serve in Sunnyvale?
Sunnyvale ZIP Codes in the Census data
The Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP Code areas line up unusually well with Sunnyvale's city limits:
- 94086 is entirely inside Sunnyvale.
- 94089, the north end toward the bay, is entirely inside Sunnyvale too.
- 94087 is almost all Sunnyvale, with a small edge in Cupertino.
- 94085 is mostly Sunnyvale, with small parts in Mountain View and Santa Clara.
The city also reaches thin slices of ZIP areas that belong mainly to its neighbors, including 95051 and 95054 in Santa Clara and 94043 in Mountain View. The city's land area is about 22 square miles, plus a small area of bay water along its northern edge. ZIP Code areas approximate postal ZIP Codes; figures are from the 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file.
None of these splits change the court. Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Santa Clara and Cupertino are all in Santa Clara County, and their cases use the same San Jose courthouses.
Serving at a Sunnyvale workplace
Many people who live in or near Sunnyvale work on large office or research campuses with a security desk at the front. A server can't walk past a guard to find someone. These details make a workplace attempt worth the trip:
- the building number and floor, not just the campus address
- the person's team, manager or assistant
- shift or badge-in times, if known
- whether the person drives, and what
For papers aimed at the company itself, a campus is usually the wrong target. Look up the entity on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online and serve its agent for service of process. Big employers often name a registered agent firm; see how we serve CSC Lawyers Incorporating Service and CT Corporation, and a general guide to serving corporations in California.
Small claims for a Sunnyvale dispute
Small claims cases in Santa Clara County are filed and heard at Downtown Superior Court. Rule 19.A covers cases where the defendant lives in the county, the contract was made or to be performed there, or the injury or damage happened there. The court's small claims page sets the limit at $12,500 for an individual.
Plaintiffs must serve the court's Notice to Small Claims Litigants (form SC-8006) with the claim, under Rule 19.D(1). Upload it with the claim and we serve both. If service can't happen in time, Rule 19.D(3) lets the plaintiff ask the clerk for a later date at least one court day before the hearing.
When you need the filing done too
If the case isn't filed yet, put both steps on one request. We file at Downtown Superior Court, at the counter or through e-filing, and send the endorsed copies out for service once the summons issues. Our Santa Clara County court filing page covers that court, and Court Filings covers others. For the e-filing rules statewide, read California court e-filing basics.
If the Sunnyvale address is stale
Renters move. If the attempt notes show a new occupant, ask about skip tracing. We look for a current address, report it to you and, with your OK, send the papers back out. For copies from an existing case file, use document retrieval.
