Our Sacramento office handles Humboldt County process serving, court filings and document retrieval. Upload the papers with a Service Request, or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com if that's easier.

The clerk's office on I Street

Humboldt Superior Court has one courthouse, at 825 5th Street in Eureka. Filing doesn't happen at the 5th Street entrance, though. The Court Clerk's Office, which takes filings, payments and case questions, is at 421 I Street, on the other side of the same building.

The court lists that office for every filing division: civil, probate (including conservatorships, guardianships and CARE Court), small claims and unlawful detainer, family, juvenile and adoptions, and criminal and traffic. Each one shows the same hours:

  • Clerk's Office: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • drop box: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Appeals, at 825 5th Street: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A five-hour counter is short. Papers that reach Eureka after 2:00 p.m. can still go in the drop box until 4:00. The court's phone menu at (707) 445-7256 sends civil, probate, small claims and eviction questions to option 2. The Self-Help Center is in Room 305 at 825 5th Street.

Paper filing only

Humboldt has no e-filing at all. The court's Online Services page says plainly that e-filing is not available in Humboldt County, and the local rules effective July 1, 2025 have no e-filing rule.

Local Rule 1.8 adds that the court doesn't take direct fax filings. A fax filing agency can file under California Rules of Court 2.300 to 2.306. That leaves the counter, the drop box, mail or a fax agency.

For a filing deadline, plan around the 2:00 p.m. counter close and the drive to Eureka. Our Court Filings service takes papers to the I Street office. The Court Filings page explains what to send with them. General information, not legal advice.

Sheriff's Civil Services

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Civil Services office has moved into the main lobby of the Sheriff's Office at 826 Fourth Street, Eureka. It is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., through lunch, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

To serve papers, the Sheriff asks for two copies of the documents per defendant and an original signed letter of instruction. The letter names who is to be served and gives a physical home address in Humboldt County. Payment is due when the papers are dropped off.

A private server is the other route. Any adult who is at least 18 and not a party to the case can serve a summons; see who can serve papers in California.

Papers to serve in Humboldt County?

Bay, valley and the far south

Humboldt Bay. Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville, Cutten, Bayside and Samoa are close together around the bay, near the Eureka courthouse. Inland from Arcata, Korbel and Blue Lake are on smaller roads toward the Mad River.

The Eel River valley. Fortuna, Rio Dell, Scotia, Ferndale and Loleta are south of the bay. Carlotta and Hydesville sit east of Fortuna on State Route 36, with ranch country beyond.

Southern Humboldt. Garberville (818 people) and Redway (1,247) are the main towns near the Mendocino line. Miranda (441), Myers Flat and Redcrest (61) are along the Avenue of the Giants. Whitethorn, Honeydew and Petrolia are farther out still. Straight-line, Garberville is closer to our office than Eureka, but the courthouse and the Sheriff are both in Eureka.

The north coast. Trinidad and Orick sit on Highway 101 toward Del Norte County.

Remote areas are subject to different timelines. For any address outside the bay area cities, we confirm timing with you once the request arrives.

What helps a server find the right door

Rural Humboldt addresses can be hard to read from a map. A Letter of Instruction works best when it gives:

  • the physical address, and a cross road or mile marker when the property is off a highway
  • a P.O. box only as a fallback, with any street address you have
  • a vehicle, a gate, or a description of the home
  • a workplace in Eureka or Arcata, with usual hours
  • a second address in Del Norte, Trinity or Mendocino County, if one exists

When an address is stale, skip tracing can look for a newer one. Our post on how to find a defendant in California covers the records involved.

Evictions, businesses and the 2027 changes

For an unlawful detainer, the tenant has 10 court days to answer after personal service. The court groups evictions with small claims at the I Street office.

A business usually gets served through its agent for service of process, even when its storefront is in Eureka. See serving corporations.

From January 1, 2027, AB 747 changes substituted service. Three good-faith attempts on 3 different days at 3 different times show reasonable diligence under CCP § 415.20(b)(2), and the county clerk's register of process servers becomes public under Bus. & Prof. Code § 22355. The AB 747 guide has more, and the proof of service guide covers the paperwork after service. General information, not legal advice.
