Miranda sits on the Avenue of the Giants in southern Humboldt County. The 2020 Census counted 441 people in the Miranda census designated place, a statistical area of about one and a half square miles. The Census Bureau's road data shows the Avenue of the Giants, State Route 254, running within a kilometer of the community's center point, with US 101 close by.
For anyone serving papers here, the defining fact is distance. The county's only courthouse is in Eureka, about 44 miles north in a straight line, and Valpro Attorney Services coordinates Miranda requests from Sacramento, roughly 167 miles away. Most of the work happens in three places: at the Miranda address, on the road between, and at the I Street clerk's counter.
Miranda's ZIP Code is shared
Miranda's ZIP Code area, 95553, is much bigger than the town. The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file shows about 70 square miles of land in it. The Miranda CDP is about 2.1% of that land. Two other named communities have pieces inside it:
- Myers Flat. About 70% of the Myers Flat census designated place lies in 95553, though it's only about 0.4% of the ZIP Code's land.
- Weott. A small slice, about 11.5% of Weott's land, falls in 95553 as well.
Everything else, about 97% of the land, is outside any named community. So "95553" on an envelope doesn't settle much. The community name, the road and any cross street do the real work. A home on a side road off the Avenue of the Giants may be several miles from either town center.
Remote areas are subject to different timelines. That's true in a literal sense for most of this ZIP Code, and it's why a good set of directions matters more here than a fast turnaround.
The road north to Eureka
Two highways connect Miranda to the courthouse: US 101 and the Avenue of the Giants, State Route 254. When we checked on October 29, 2026, Caltrans listed one restriction on Route 254: one-way controlled traffic 0.3 miles north of Weott, 24 hours a day, every day, for slide removal, a long-running restriction at the time. Weott is about 8.5 miles north of Miranda by map point, so the restriction matters for anyone driving the Avenue rather than the freeway.
Caltrans updates conditions at roads.dot.ca.gov and 1-800-427-7623. Check before you set a service or filing deadline that leaves no slack.
Try mail first when the defendant will cooperate
Driving 44 miles for one attempt doesn't always make sense, especially when the defendant is likely to accept the papers. California offers a mail option for a summons and complaint, set out in CCP § 415.30:
- Mail a copy of the summons and complaint by first-class mail, with two copies of the statutory notice and acknowledgment of receipt and a prepaid envelope addressed back to you.
- The defendant, or someone authorized to sign for them, signs and dates the acknowledgment and returns it.
- Service is deemed complete on the date the acknowledgment is signed.
The notice tells the recipient that failing to return the form within 20 days may make them liable for the cost of serving them another way. It's a useful tool for a business partner, a former spouse who has a lawyer, or anyone who's said they'll cooperate. It doesn't work on someone who is avoiding the case, because nothing happens until they sign.
The Judicial Council's form for this method is the Notice and Acknowledgment of Receipt, POS-015, and a form approved by the Judicial Council is deemed to comply with the statute. When the signed form comes back, it supports the proof of service you file.
If 20 days pass with no acknowledgment, personal or substituted service is the next step. Tell us when you mailed it so the attempts can be planned around your deadline. General information, not legal advice.
Small claims: the clerk can mail the claim
A Miranda small claims case has its own mail route. Under CCP § 116.340(a)(1), the clerk can mail the claim and order to the defendant by a form of mail that requires a return receipt. Service is then complete on the date the defendant signs that receipt. If no one signs, the mailing doesn't count, and the claim has to be delivered another way: in person, or by substituted service at home or at work.
The timing rules in § 116.340 apply whichever way it's done:
- at least 15 days before the hearing if the defendant lives in Humboldt County
- at least 20 days before the hearing if the defendant lives in another county
- the proof of service filed with the court at least 5 days before the hearing
The person who filed the claim can't serve it personally. Any adult who isn't a party can, and that person then signs the small claims proof of service. With a 44-mile drive to the courthouse and back, a plaintiff waiting on a return receipt that never arrives can run out of time. If the hearing is close, tell us the date when you send the request.

Defaults and the Humboldt fee schedule
When a served defendant doesn't respond, the plaintiff can ask for a default. If the contract, promissory note or other obligation sued on allows attorney fees, Humboldt Local Rule 2.10 sets the amount the court will usually award unless it orders otherwise:
| Amount of the damages award | Fee under Local Rule 2.10 |
|---|---|
| $0.01 to $1,000 | 15%, with a $75 minimum |
| $1,000.01 to $10,000 | $150 plus 6% of the excess over $1,000 |
| $10,000.01 to $50,000 | $690 plus 3% of the excess over $10,000 |
| $50,000.01 to $100,000 | $1,890 plus 2% of the excess over $50,000 |
| Over $100,000 | $2,890 plus 1% of the excess over $100,000 |
The court applies the schedule to the damages award alone, without costs, interest or fees. Anyone asking for more must file a declaration supporting the higher figure. The rule excludes unlawful detainer actions.
None of that matters until service is right. A default rests on a valid proof of service, so the server's declaration has to describe exactly how and where the papers reached the defendant. Our proof of service guide explains what that document contains. General information, not legal advice.
Booking an interpreter for a Eureka hearing
Some Southern Humboldt parties need an interpreter at their hearing, and the Humboldt rule on that is stricter than people expect. Local Rule 1.16 says:
- Ask for an interpreter in open court when the hearing is set. If that can't happen, tell the court at least 10 court days before the appearance and file the court's Request for Interpreter form by then.
- In civil, probate and family law matters, the court will try to locate an interpreter, but the party who needs one is ultimately responsible for finding and paying for the interpreter, except where the law requires otherwise.
- If the interpreter isn't needed after all, notify the court at least 48 hours before the hearing, or the court may order you to repay any cancellation fee it owes the interpreter.
For service, the practical point is the date. A hearing that needs an interpreter also needs the other side served early enough that the date holds.
Emergency family orders and the notice declaration
Family cases from Miranda are heard in Eureka too, at the Family / Juvenile / Adoptions counter on I Street. Two Humboldt family rules affect how papers move:
Ex parte requests. Local Rule 8.14 requires every application for emergency orders, or for a hearing on short notice, to include a declaration that notice was given to the other party or explaining why it wasn't. The court's Declaration re Notice of Ex Parte Hearing form is the one to use. For a parent who lives off the Avenue of the Giants, giving that notice in time can be the hardest step.
Changing custody after judgment. Under Local Rule 8.16(b), once a divorce or legal separation judgment is entered, neither parent may modify custody or visitation orders, except by agreement, without completing the Children of Divorce Workshop and providing proof, or getting a waiver. The rule doesn't apply to restraining orders or temporary emergency orders.
When the other parent has to be served with a request for order, send every address you have, including a workplace. General information, not legal advice.
Filing from 44 miles away
The Clerk's Office at 421 I Street is open 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and its drop box takes documents from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The court's Online Services page says e-filing isn't available in Humboldt County. That leaves the counter, the drop box, mail or a fax filing agency.
A 44-mile drive and a 2:00 p.m. counter don't leave much room for a missing page. Our Humboldt County court filing service can carry papers to I Street and pair the filing with service on one request.
