Del Norte County is the last county on the California coast before Oregon. It's small by population: the 2020 Census counted 27,743 residents. Crescent City, the county seat and only incorporated city, has 6,673. The unincorporated communities are smaller still: Klamath (1,088), Fort Dick (912), Smith River (906) and Gasquet (657).
We handle Del Norte County process serving, court filings and document retrieval from our Sacramento office. Send the documents on a Service Request or email them to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.
The courthouse on H Street
Del Norte Superior Court has one courthouse, at 450 H Street in Crescent City, with the clerk in Room 209. The court lists no other location, so civil, small claims, family, juvenile, criminal and traffic matters all run through this building.
Its hours have three layers:
- filing windows, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- the external drop box outside the building, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday except holidays
- Mailbox #31 in the main lobby, open only from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m., after the windows close
The Civil Division lists its office hours as 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If a deadline falls late in the day, the lobby mailbox is the last chance to get papers in at the courthouse.
Fax and paper, no e-filing rule
Del Norte has no published e-filing rule. We found no e-filing rule and no e-filing page on the court's site as of October 29, 2026. The posted local rules took effect January 1, 2012.
What the rules do allow is direct fax filing. Under Local Rule 2.3, a party may fax documents in civil, probate and family law matters to the clerk at (707) 465-4005. The fax needs a transmission cover sheet with a contact person, a copy of a check for the fax charge and any filing fees, and the check must reach the clerk within five court days. Faxes are capped at 35 pages, including attachments and exhibits. The court can suspend or deny fax filing, and a fax filing agency is also allowed.
The court's online services page links a case portal and a "Mailbox Access" site, but it doesn't describe either as e-filing. Confirm with the clerk at (707) 464-8115 if you plan to file that way.
Our Court Filings service can get papers to the H Street counter or drop box. Because the courthouse is about 260 miles from our office, tell us the deadline as early as possible. Court Filings explains what we need with the documents. This is general information, not legal advice.
Between the redwoods and the Oregon line
Del Norte's geography decides how service goes.
Crescent City and the harbor. Most addresses in town are ordinary city streets. Pelican Bay State Prison is just north of town, and serving someone in state custody follows the prison's own procedures. Call us before you send that kind of request.
Fort Dick and Smith River. North of Crescent City toward the Oregon border, these are rural residential areas, some with long private drives.
Gasquet and the Smith River canyon. U.S. 199 follows the Smith River inland toward Oregon. Gasquet and the homes along the highway sit in steep, forested country.
Klamath and the south county. U.S. 101 runs south through redwood parkland to Klamath at the mouth of the Klamath River. Some of this area is tribal land; if an address is on a reservation, say so in the Letter of Instruction, because service on tribal land can raise its own questions. This is general information, not legal advice.
The whole county is far from Sacramento, and remote areas are subject to different timelines. U.S. 101 and U.S. 199 are the main highway routes in, and weather or road work on either can slow travel.
What to send with a Del Norte County job
With long drives between towns, a complete first trip matters. Include:
- the physical location, not only a P.O. box
- a cross road, mile marker or landmark for rural property
- a description of the house, gate or vehicle
- the person's work schedule, including fishing, timber or shift work
- any address you have in Humboldt County, Curry County in Oregon, or elsewhere
If the address may be old, skip tracing can look for a current one before a server makes the drive. Our post on how to find a defendant in California explains what to collect.
Proofs, servers and the 2027 rules
Any adult who is at least 18 and not a party to the case can serve a summons. The who can serve papers guide covers that rule and the registration requirement for people who serve for pay. The proof of service guide explains what you file afterward, and the AB 747 guide covers the changes starting January 1, 2027.
For a company with a Crescent City location, service usually goes to its agent for service of process. See serving corporations for how to find it.
