Shasta County sits at the top of the Sacramento Valley, where the valley floor gives way to the Cascades, the Klamath Mountains and the lake country. The 2020 Census counted 182,155 residents. Most live in a short stretch of the I-5 corridor: Redding (93,611), Anderson (11,323) and Shasta Lake (10,371). The rest of the county is spread across foothill ranches, mountain towns and the Intermountain area to the east.

We take Shasta County process serving, court filings and document retrieval from our Sacramento office. Send the documents on a Service Request or email them to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.

One courthouse for every case type

Filing in Shasta County is simple on paper. The court lists a single location, the Redding Main Courthouse at 1515 Court Street, which holds Departments 21 through 64 and jury assembly. The civil, unlawful detainer, small claims, family law and probate division pages all point to that address.

Clerk's office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for civil, eviction, small claims and probate, and for the first-floor family law clerk. Family Court Services on the third floor keeps 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A case from Burney or Cottonwood goes to the same building as a case from downtown Redding.

That also means there is no branch to fall back on. If a filing is due and the counter closes at 4:00, the deadline is effectively 4:00 in Redding. Give us the documents early enough for the drive.

Filing today, and what may change on January 1, 2027

Shasta is one of the California courts that hasn't adopted e-filing for civil cases. Its local rules effective July 1, 2026 contain no e-filing rule, and the online services page lists case records, tentative rulings and traffic payments, not e-filing. The Civil Division page says the court does not accept direct fax filings. Fax filing agencies can submit papers under Local Rule 5.14.

On October 2, 2026, the court posted proposed Local Rule 2.20 for public comment. As written, it would make e-filing mandatory in limited civil, unlimited civil, class actions, complex civil litigation and probate, effective January 1, 2027. Original wills and codicils would still be lodged on paper, and self-represented litigants would be exempt under California Rules of Court, rule 2.253(b)(2). Comments close at 5:00 p.m. on November 16, 2026, and the court plans to consider adoption in mid-November.

Until the court adopts it, treat it as a proposal. We file Shasta County papers at the Redding counter today through our Court Filings service. If the rule is adopted, attorney filings in those case types would go through the court's approved provider. Our Court Filings overview lists what to send with the documents. This is general information, not legal advice.

Beyond the I-5 corridor

Redding, Anderson and Shasta Lake are compact, and most addresses there are a short drive from the courthouse. The county gets harder to cover the farther you go from the freeway.

To the east, State Route 299 and State Route 44 climb toward Shingletown, Burney and Fall River Mills in the Intermountain area. North of Shasta Lake, Lakehead and the communities along the lake arms sit on winding roads. West of Redding, roads into the Klamath foothills lead to scattered rural homes. Winter weather can close or slow mountain roads.

Remote areas are subject to different timelines. For an address outside the three cities, we confirm timing with you once the request comes in.

Information that saves a trip

A server can't call ahead to ask for directions to a ranch gate. Before you send a Shasta County job, gather:

  • the physical location if the mailing address is a P.O. box or a rural route
  • a cross road, landmark or gate description for property off a county road
  • whether a lakeside or mountain property is lived in year-round
  • the person's workplace and usual hours, if known
  • any dogs, locked gates or shared driveways the server should expect

When an address turns out to be stale, skip tracing can search for a newer one. Our post on skip tracing for legal cases covers what records help.

Rules that apply to every Shasta County service

Any adult who is at least 18 and not a party to the case can serve a summons, and the court's own civil page says so. Our guide on who can serve papers in California has the details, and the proof of service guide covers how service is proved after it's done.

California's service rules change on January 1, 2027, when AB 747 takes effect. That's the same day Shasta's proposed e-filing rule would start, so cases filed late in 2026 may run into both. Read the AB 747 guide for what changes. This is general information, not legal advice.

For a business with a Redding storefront but a corporate home elsewhere, service usually goes to its agent for service of process. See serving corporations.

Shasta County process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Is there more than one courthouse in Shasta County?

No. The court lists one location, the Redding Main Courthouse at 1515 Court Street, Redding, CA 96001. Civil, unlawful detainer, small claims, family law and probate clerk's offices are all in that building, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Source: shasta.courts.ca.gov division pages, checked October 29, 2026.

Can I e-file in Shasta County Superior Court today?

Not as of October 29, 2026. The current local rules have no e-filing rule, and the court's online services page lists none. The court has proposed Local Rule 2.20, which would require e-filing in civil and probate cases from January 1, 2027 if it is adopted. Public comment closes November 16, 2026.

Does Shasta County Superior Court accept fax filings?

Not directly. The Civil Division page says the court does not accept direct fax filings, but documents can be submitted through a fax filing agency and must comply with Local Rule 5.14. Paper filed at the counter in Redding is the other route. Checked October 29, 2026.

Who would have to e-file if the proposed Shasta rule is adopted?

As posted on October 2, 2026, proposed Rule 2.20 covers limited civil, unlimited civil, class actions, complex civil and probate. Original wills and codicils would still be lodged on paper, and self-represented litigants would be exempt. It isn't adopted yet, so check the court's site after mid-November 2026.

How long does service take in Burney or Shingletown?

Longer than in Redding, in most cases. These are mountain and Intermountain communities well east of the I-5 corridor, and remote areas are subject to different timelines. Call 855-582-5776 before you choose Rush for an address outside Redding, Anderson or Shasta Lake.

How far is Shasta County from your office?

Redding is about 143 miles straight-line from our Sacramento office, Anderson about 134 and Shasta Lake about 150. Jobs are coordinated from our Sacramento office.
