Redcrest is a very small place. The 2020 Census counted 61 residents in the Redcrest census designated place, an area of a little over half a square mile in southern Humboldt County. That's small enough that most papers headed to a "Redcrest" address are really going to land outside the Census area, somewhere in the much larger ZIP Code around it.
For a Redcrest matter, four things decide how the job goes: which court the case belongs in, how far that court is, what the Census and Caltrans data say about the area, and what a server needs to find a person here. We handle Redcrest requests from Sacramento, about 180 miles away in a straight line.

Two ZIP Codes, mostly open land
The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file shows how little of the surrounding ZIP Code area the Census community takes up.
95569 has about 54.8 square miles of land. The Redcrest CDP accounts for about 0.6 square miles of it, roughly 1%. The other 99% isn't in any named community. Redcrest is the only Census place the file lists inside 95569 at all, so every other address in that ZIP Code is, in Census terms, outside any named community.
95565 has about 33.7 square miles of land. Scotia covers about 2.2% of it, and Redcrest's share is a sliver, well under 1%. Almost 98% is outside any named place.
In practice, a summons addressed to Redcrest 95569 could mean a house near the Census center point, or a home miles away on a side road that shares only the ZIP Code. The address line alone won't tell a server which. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, and that applies here in a literal way.
Highways at the edge of the Census area
The Census Bureau's TIGERweb road data shows two highways within about 150 meters of the Redcrest CDP's internal point: State Highway 254 and US 101, which TIGER labels Redwood Highway. A local road, Englewood Ranch Road, appears in the same search.
Those are the roads a server uses to reach the area, so their condition affects timing. When we checked on October 29, 2026, Caltrans road information listed one-way controlled traffic on State Route 254 at a point 0.3 miles north of Weott, running 24 hours a day, every day, for slide removal, a long-running restriction at the time. Weott is the closest listed community to Redcrest, about 5.4 miles away. Caltrans updates conditions at roads.dot.ca.gov and 1-800-427-7623, and it's worth checking before you set a short deadline.
Thirty miles to the courthouse
Humboldt County has one courthouse, at 825 5th Street in Eureka, and its Clerk's Office at 421 I Street takes filings for every case type. From Redcrest's Census center point, the building is about 30 miles north in a straight line. The Sheriff's Civil Services counter, at 826 Fourth Street, is about 300 feet from the courthouse by the Census Geocoder's coordinates.
The court's counter is open 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and its drop box 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The court doesn't offer e-filing. Under Local Rule 1.8 it won't accept a fax sent straight to the court, though a fax filing agency can file for you. Mail is the remaining option. Only a first-time domestic violence or gun violence restraining order request can be submitted online.
For a Redcrest party, the distance and the early counter close make morning filing the safe habit. Two other details save trips. The court's Self-Help Center, in Room 305, books appointments by phone at (707) 445-7256, extension 1321, or by email, so a self-represented party can arrange help before driving up. And under Local Rule 1.15, a court file asked for today is ready to view the next court day, so reading a file and filing in it may take two visits unless someone retrieves copies for you. Our Humboldt County court filing service can carry papers to I Street and serve the same case on one request.

Court rules worth knowing for a Redcrest case
A few Humboldt rules turn on timing, and timing is what distance strains. In plain terms:
- Ex parte matters. Local Rule 2.9 sets a noon cutoff. Civil ex parte papers that arrive before noon are heard the next court day; later arrivals wait two court days.
- Evictions. Local Rule 2.12 says an unlawful detainer will be dismissed without prejudice if no proof of service of the summons is filed within 60 days of the complaint. After personal service, a tenant has 10 court days to answer.
- Probate. Local Rule 6.3 wants every paper for a set probate hearing, including the proposed order, at the I Street office at least five court days before the hearing.
- Hearings by phone or video. Local Rule 1.13 pre-approves remote appearances at non-evidentiary hearings and case management conferences. Trials and domestic violence restraining order hearings call for a personal appearance unless the court allows otherwise.

What a server needs for a Redcrest address
With so little of the ZIP Code inside the Census area, the instructions do most of the work. Send:
- The physical location. A road name and a cross road, a mile marker, or a distance from a fixed point. A ZIP Code alone covers more than 50 square miles.
- Access. Whether there's a gate, and the code if you have it. Whether the drive is paved, and whether a car can turn around.
- The building. Which structure on the parcel the person lives in, especially if there's more than one.
- The person. A description, a recent photo, and the vehicle they drive.
- The schedule. When they're usually home, and any workplace, which may be in a town miles away.
- The deadline. A hearing date, an answer date or any other date the service has to beat.
If you don't have a usable street address, skip tracing can look for one before a server goes out. Our post on how to find a defendant in California explains what the search draws on.
Workplaces are often easier than rural homes. Using Census center points, Scotia, a census designated place of 681 people at the 2020 Census, is about 9.9 miles from Redcrest in a straight line. Rio Dell, an incorporated city of 3,379, is about 11.1 miles, and Fortuna, with 12,516, about 16.6. If the person works in one of those towns, the employer and shift give a server a second, more predictable place to try.
Mailing addresses, P.O. boxes and private mailboxes
Rural residents often receive mail somewhere other than where they live, so the type of address matters.
CCP § 415.20(b) lets a server, after reasonable diligence, leave the summons with a competent adult at the person's home, usual place of business, or usual mailing address. The statute excludes a U.S. Postal Service post office box from that list. Leaving papers at a P.O. box isn't valid service.
A private mailbox rented from a commercial mail receiving agency is treated differently. Under § 415.20(c), when that box is the only address reasonably known, service can be made on the first attempt by leaving the papers with the agency in the manner the Business and Professions Code describes.
Substituted service also has a mailing step. A copy goes by first-class mail to the address where the papers were left, and service is complete on the 10th day after mailing. When a deadline is close, those 10 days can decide whether a substituted service still works. General information, not legal advice.
Sheriff or private server
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Civil Services office serves physical addresses anywhere in the county. It wants two copies of the papers for each defendant, an original signed letter of instruction that names who is to be served and gives a physical Humboldt County address, and payment when the papers are dropped off. Most papers cost $50 per person or entity. It's open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday until 12:30 p.m.
A private server is the other choice, and can follow a person who has left the county on the same request. Our guide on who can serve papers in California covers who may serve. From January 1, 2027, the AB 747 amendments to § 415.20(b)(2) treat three good-faith tries at personal delivery, on 3 different days and at 3 different times, as a showing of reasonable diligence. Our AB 747 guide explains it, and the proof of service guide shows what the server signs afterward. We make no guarantees for service.
