Redway is a census designated place in the southern part of Humboldt County, with 1,247 people at the 2020 Census, about 2 miles from Garberville. It's also one of the farthest points in Humboldt County from the courthouse. Straight-line, the Humboldt County Courthouse in Eureka is about 50 miles north of Redway's Census center point, and the drive on US 101 is longer.

Oddly, Redway is closer to our Sacramento office than Eureka is: about 162 miles, against about 207. But every Humboldt filing and the Sheriff's Civil Services desk are in Eureka, so a Redway job usually has two ends: service in Southern Humboldt and paperwork 50 miles up the road.

Fifty miles from the counter

Humboldt runs one courthouse, and its Court Clerk's Office at 421 I Street, Eureka, takes filings for civil, probate, small claims, unlawful detainer, family and criminal cases. The counter is open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The drop box is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There's no electronic shortcut. The court's Online Services page says e-filing isn't available in Humboldt County, and Local Rule 1.8 rules out faxing directly to the court. For a Redway party, a filing reaches the court in one of these ways:

  • someone carries it to the I Street counter before 2:00 p.m.
  • someone leaves it in the drop box before 4:00 p.m.
  • it goes by mail, which adds transit days
  • a fax filing agency files it under California Rules of Court 2.300 to 2.306

Domestic violence and gun violence restraining orders have one more route. The court accepts initial requests through an online portal at any hour and says processing can take up to 24 hours. Everything after the first request goes in person or by mail.

Our Humboldt County court filing service takes papers to I Street, and we can file and serve a Redway case on one request.

Redway is a small piece of 95560

The town and its ZIP Code are very different sizes. In the Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file, ZIP Code area 95560 has about 16.7 square miles of land. The Redway census designated place covers about 1.3 square miles of that, roughly 7.5%. The remaining 92.5% isn't part of any named community.

Garberville, 2 miles away, isn't in 95560 at all; the Census file places it in 95542. So two people who both say they live "in Redway" can be a five-minute walk from the post office or a long way up a back road.

That difference decides how much information a server needs. A town address with a visible number is straightforward. A rural 95560 address may be on a private road with a locked gate, and the house may not be visible from where the road ends. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, and for those addresses we confirm timing with you once the request is in.

Planning around a 2:00 p.m. counter

Distance and a short counter combine in Redway in a way they don't in Eureka. A few habits keep deadlines safe:

  • File in the morning. Papers that leave Southern Humboldt mid-morning reach I Street with time to spare. An afternoon start often means the drop box, not the counter.
  • Use the drop box deliberately. It stays open until 4:00 p.m. and takes papers when the counter is closed.
  • Watch the ex parte cutoff. Under Local Rule 2.9, civil ex parte papers that arrive before noon make the next court day's calendar. After noon, the earliest date is two court days out, and any opposition is due two hours before the hearing.
  • Count the return trip. Once a Redway defendant is served, the signed proof of service usually has to be filed as well, and in Humboldt that means the counter, the drop box or the mail again. Build that leg into the schedule, especially in an eviction, where the 60-day rule below applies.
  • Check the highway. Caltrans posts current conditions for US 101 and every state route at roads.dot.ca.gov and 1-800-427-7623. On October 29, 2026, it listed one-way traffic control in several Humboldt County work zones.

Hearings you may not have to drive to

Not every court date in Eureka requires the trip. Humboldt Local Rule 1.13 allows remote appearances by phone or video under California Rules of Court 3.670, and it pre-approves them for non-evidentiary hearings and case management conferences, with no court approval or notice to the other side needed.

Evidentiary hearings are different. The rule requires personal appearance for testimony at trial and for domestic violence restraining order hearings, among others. A party who wants to appear remotely at an evidentiary hearing files Judicial Council form RA-010, Notice of Remote Appearance, and an objecting party uses form RA-015. The rule also warns that connection trouble isn't good cause for missing a hearing.

For a Redway party, that changes the planning. A case management conference may be handled from home, but a restraining order hearing means a day in Eureka, and the restrained person has to be served before it. General information, not legal advice.

Evictions on Southern Humboldt rentals

A Redway landlord files an unlawful detainer at the I Street counter in Eureka, like everyone else in the county. What happens next is mostly a matter of timing.

After personal service of the summons, the tenant has 10 court days to answer. Court days leave out weekends and court holidays, so the calendar span is longer than two weeks. On the court's side, Humboldt Local Rule 2.12 says that if a proof of service of the summons hasn't been filed within 60 days of the complaint, the court will dismiss the case without prejudice under CCP § 1167.1. The rule means a landlord who waits too long to serve has to start over.

At the end of a case the landlord wins, the Sheriff, not a private server, enforces the writ of possession. Its Civil Services fee for a writ of possession is $180, paid when the writ is dropped off in Eureka.

For the summons, send the name of every adult occupant you're serving, and describe the property: the main house or a second unit, a shared driveway, a gate code. General information, not legal advice.

Writing instructions for a Redway address

A Southern Humboldt address can be hard to find from the paperwork alone. A strong Letter of Instruction includes:

  1. The physical location, not only the mailing address. Give the road name and a cross road, a mile marker, or a distance from a landmark that won't change.
  2. Access details: gate, gate code, dogs, a bridge or a dirt section, and where a car can safely park.
  3. The person's description, a recent photo if possible, and the vehicle they drive.
  4. Their schedule, including a job in Redway, Garberville or farther north.
  5. A second address, if the person splits time with a place in Eureka or out of the county.

A P.O. box can go in the letter as background, but it isn't a place to serve. If the only address on file is a box, skip tracing can look for a street address first. Our post on how to find a defendant in California explains what records that search uses.

Sheriff or private server for Redway

The Humboldt County Sheriff serves civil papers anywhere in the county, Redway included. Its Civil Services counter is in the Sheriff's Office lobby at 826 Fourth Street in Eureka. It asks for two copies of the documents per defendant, an original signed letter of instruction naming who is served and a physical home address in Humboldt County, and payment at drop-off by cash, check or money order. Most papers are $50 per person or entity.

A private server is the other choice. California allows any adult who is 18 or older and not a party to serve a summons, as our guide on who can serve papers in California explains. Starting January 1, 2027, three good-faith attempts at personal delivery, made on 3 different days at 3 different times, show reasonable diligence before papers can be left with another adult (CCP § 415.20(b)(2), amended by AB 747). Our AB 747 guide covers the change, and the proof of service guide shows the signed return. For a business, see serving corporations.

If the person lives over the county line

Southern Humboldt sits close to Mendocino County. Piercy, about 10.7 miles from Redway in a straight line, is already in Mendocino. A Redway plaintiff's case is still filed in Eureka, but a defendant who has moved south is served in Mendocino County, and the Humboldt Sheriff's instructions only cover Humboldt addresses. Send us every address you have. Our Mendocino County page covers that side of the line.

Redway process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

How long does it take to serve papers in Redway?

It depends on the address and how much we know about it. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, and much of the 95560 area is rural. Tell us the deadline when you send the request, and call 855-582-5776 before choosing Rush so we can say what's realistic. We make no guarantees for service.

Is there a courthouse in Southern Humboldt?

Not on the court's current list. The Humboldt Superior Court's Contact Us/Locations page shows one courthouse, at 825 5th Street in Eureka, with every filing division at the Clerk's Office on I Street. From Redway's Census center point, that's about 50 miles north in a straight line. Checked October 2026.

My defendant's address is Redway 95560. Is that the town?

Maybe not. The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place file shows 95560 has about 16.7 square miles of land, and only about 7.5% of it is inside the Redway census designated place. The other 92.5% isn't in any named community. Send directions or a parcel description with any address outside town.

Can I mail papers to the Humboldt court instead of driving to Eureka?

Yes. The court takes filings at the I Street counter, in its drop box or by mail, and a fax filing agency can file under Local Rule 1.8. It doesn't offer e-filing. Only first-time domestic violence and gun violence restraining order requests can be sent online. Mail adds days, so it doesn't suit a same-week deadline.

A Redway tenant was served last week. When is the answer due?

Ten court days after personal service of the unlawful detainer summons. Court days skip weekends and court holidays, so the calendar count is longer. Separately, Humboldt Local Rule 2.12 dismisses an eviction without prejudice if no proof of service is filed within 60 days of the complaint. General information, not legal advice.

Will the Sheriff come to Redway to serve papers?

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Civil Services office serves papers anywhere in the county, but it works from the main lobby of 826 Fourth Street in Eureka. It needs two copies per person, an original signed letter of instruction with a physical Humboldt address, and payment at drop-off. Most papers cost $50 per person served.

What's the latest I can get ex parte papers to Eureka from Redway?

Under Humboldt Local Rule 2.9, civil ex parte papers must reach the court before noon to be heard on the next court day. Papers that arrive after noon go on the calendar two court days later. With a 50-mile trip and a 2:00 p.m. counter, plan the filing for the morning. General information, not legal advice.

Do I have to go to Eureka for a case management conference on a Redway case?

Usually not. Humboldt Local Rule 1.13 pre-approves remote appearances by phone or video for non-evidentiary hearings and case management conferences, without court approval or notice to other parties. Trials and domestic violence restraining order hearings require a personal appearance unless the court allows otherwise. General information, not legal advice.
