Korbel is a small Humboldt County community a couple of miles east of Blue Lake. The U.S. Geological Survey lists it as a populated place, and the Census Bureau's road data shows Korbel Road, Maple Creek Road and Blue Lake Boulevard running within a kilometer of its map point, with State Route 299 a little farther off. The Census Bureau draws no boundary around it, so there's no Korbel population figure and no city limit.
Two details set Korbel apart for legal papers. It shares its name with another California place, so the county on the papers deserves a second look. And it's close enough to Eureka, about 12 miles from the courthouse in a straight line, that a filing and a service can often be planned for the same day. We handle Korbel requests from Sacramento, about 204 miles south.
One name, two counties
The USGS place-name database has two populated places named Korbel in California. One is in Humboldt County, feature 1658920. The other is in Sonoma County, feature 226677. This page is about the Humboldt one, where addresses use ZIP Code 95550.
That matters more than it sounds. A complaint filed in the wrong county, or papers sent to a server in the wrong part of the state, costs days. Before you send a Korbel request, check three things on the papers:
- The county named in the caption of the court papers.
- The ZIP Code on the address you have for the person.
- Whether the person actually lives or works at that address now.
If the ZIP Code is 95550, it's the Humboldt Korbel. If it's anything else, call us at 855-582-5776 and we'll sort it out before anyone drives anywhere.
ZIP 95550 has no Census place
The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file shows about 136 square miles of land in ZIP Code area 95550, and it lists no incorporated city or census designated place inside it. All of that land is, in Census terms, outside any named community.
So a Korbel address can be near the junction of local roads east of Blue Lake, or a long way up a side road. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, and for a ZIP Code this large that's a real factor. The most useful things you can send are:
- the road name and the nearest cross road
- a description of the gate, the driveway and the house
- which building on the parcel the person lives in
- a photo or description of the person, and the vehicle they drive
Route 299, Blue Lake and Arcata
On October 29, 2026, at 12:20 p.m., Caltrans road information reported no traffic restrictions on State Route 299. That can change with weather or work crews, so check roads.dot.ca.gov or call 1-800-427-7623 when timing is tight.
Workplaces nearby often give a server a better chance than a rural home. By straight-line distance from Korbel's map point, Blue Lake, an incorporated city of 1,208 at the 2020 Census, is about 2.1 miles away. Arcata, a city of 18,857, is about 6.1 miles, and McKinleyville about 8.4. If the person works in one of them, send the employer, the hours and a description.
When the right defendant turns up after filing
Plaintiffs often sue "Does 1 through 10" because they don't yet know everyone involved, such as the owner behind a business name or a second driver. When a real name turns up, Humboldt has a specific procedure.
Use the local form. Local Rule 2.1 says parties must use the Amendment to Complaint form in Appendix 2.1 of the local rules to add a properly named Doe defendant or to correct an incorrectly named one.
Serve fast. California Rules of Court rule 3.110(b) says that when a complaint is amended to add a defendant, that defendant must be served, and the proof of service filed, within 30 days after the amended complaint is filed. That's half the 60 days allowed for the original defendants.
Serve the right packet. The newly named defendant should receive the summons, the complaint and the filed amendment. Upload all of them, and tell us which name the amendment substitutes for which Doe number, so the proof of service matches the court file.
The same form fixes a defendant who was named wrong. That happens often with businesses sued under a trade name. Before amending, look the entity up on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online search and copy its exact legal name and its agent for service of process. A corporation or LLC is then usually served through that agent rather than at a storefront, and our serving corporations page explains who can accept papers for a company.
If you know who the person is but not where they live, skip tracing can look for a current address before the 30 days start to run down. Our post on skip tracing for legal cases explains how that search works. General information, not legal advice.
Papers to serve in Korbel?
Witness subpoenas for a Korbel witness
A witness who lives in Korbel can be ordered to appear at a Eureka hearing or trial with a civil subpoena. CCP § 1987(a) sets the basic rules for serving one:
- Personal delivery. The subpoena, or a ticket containing its substance, is delivered to the witness personally.
- Fees on demand. If the witness asks, the server must give or offer the fees for travel to and from the place named and one day's attendance.
- Reasonable time. Service has to leave the witness reasonable time to prepare and travel.
- Anyone may serve it. The statute says service may be made by any person.
- Minors. A subpoena for a minor goes to a parent, guardian or similar fiduciary, and also to the minor if the minor is 12 or older.
Government Code § 68093 sets ordinary witness fees in civil cases at $35 a day for actual attendance and 20 cents a mile actually traveled, both ways, except where other law provides otherwise. For a Korbel witness traveling to Eureka, have the fee calculated before the server goes out, in case the witness demands it at the door.
A party to the case, or an officer, director or managing agent of a party, can be required to attend through a written notice served on that party's attorney instead, under § 1987(b). The notice must be served at least 10 days before the appearance unless the court shortens the time. If that notice is served at least 20 days ahead, § 1987(c) lets it also ask the party to bring specific documents or things. The notice has to describe them exactly, and the party has five days to serve written objections. Our post on how to serve a subpoena in California covers the other kinds of subpoenas. General information, not legal advice.
Planning attempts at a rural Korbel home
A summons is different from a subpoena. Under CCP § 415.20(b), when the defendant can't be handed the papers personally with reasonable diligence, they can be left with a competent adult member of the household, or with a person apparently in charge at the defendant's office or place of business, and a copy is then mailed to the same address. For a Korbel defendant who works in Arcata or Blue Lake, the workplace can be the more practical place to finish service.
Reasonable diligence comes first, and the 2027 changes make that clearer. From January 1, 2027, three good-faith attempts at personal delivery, on 3 different days at 3 different times, show reasonable diligence before papers are left with another adult. Our AB 747 guide explains the change.
On a 95550 address, spreading attempts across mornings, evenings and a weekend day takes planning, and every attempt goes into the server's log. Tell us when the person is likely home, and whether anyone else lives there. General information, not legal advice.
Subpoenaing a deputy or other public employee
Public employees are a special case. CCP § 1987(a) itself points to Government Code §§ 68097.1 to 68097.8 for them, and those sections handle service and fees differently. In Humboldt, the Sheriff's Civil Services fee schedule lists a $275 deposit for deputy witness fees on civil subpoenas.
The Civil Services office has moved into the main lobby of the Sheriff's Office at 826 Fourth Street in Eureka. It's open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., through lunch, and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It takes cash, check or money order, and payment is due when the papers are handed in. If your witness list includes a deputy and a private citizen, the two subpoenas usually take different paths.
Filing in Eureka, 12 miles away
Korbel cases are filed at the Humboldt County Courthouse, 825 5th Street, through the Clerk's Office at 421 I Street. The counter keeps 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the drop box takes papers from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There's no e-filing in Humboldt, and Local Rule 1.8 rules out faxing directly to the court, though a fax filing agency can file for you.
At about 12 miles, Korbel is one of the closer rural communities to the courthouse, which helps when an amendment has to be filed and then served within 30 days. Our Humboldt County court filing service can take the amendment or the subpoena paperwork to I Street and handle service on the same request.
What a Korbel Service Request should include
Start the Service Request and attach up to 5 PDFs. Include:
- The papers to be served, with any amendment naming a former Doe defendant.
- The person's name, exactly as it appears, and a description.
- The full address with directions, because 95550 covers a lot of ground.
- The deadline, such as the 30-day amendment window or the hearing date on a subpoena.
- Witness fee details, if a subpoena may need fees offered on the spot.
