Rancho Cordova is a newer city with an older name. The City of Rancho Cordova officially incorporated on July 1, 2003, becoming the 478th city in California, after what the city calls a 40-year effort that started in the 1960s. It had 79,332 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau estimates 87,554 as of July 1, 2025.

The county's civil process office sits in Rancho Cordova

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Civil Bureau, which serves civil process for the sheriff, isn't downtown. Its office is at 2969 Prospect Park Drive, Suite 200, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670, phone 916-875-2665. The sheriff's page lists these public hours:

DayPublic counter
Monday9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Tuesday–Thursday9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Friday9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

A drop box is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays, and the bureau runs an e-Services portal for submitting requests and checking a civil file's status. The sheriff's page also states plainly that you are responsible for filing any proof of service or declaration of due diligence with the court.

So you have two routes for a Rancho Cordova defendant. You can hand the sheriff its instruction forms and fee, then file the return yourself. Or you can send one Service Request to us, put everything the server needs in the Letter of Instruction, and get each update by email. Source: sacsheriff.com Civil Bureau page, checked October 2026.

A city since 2003, county land before that

Before July 1, 2003, Rancho Cordova was unincorporated Sacramento County territory. Documents from those years may describe a Rancho Cordova property that way. For service of process, incorporation changed nothing about the court. A Rancho Cordova case was a Sacramento County case before 2003 and still is.

Incorporation does matter when the city itself is a party. The City of Rancho Cordova is a public entity, and CCP § 416.50 says a summons is served on a public entity by delivering the summons and complaint to its clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of its governing body. If your papers name the city, a city department or a city official, tell us exactly who is named so we deliver to the right office. This is general information, not legal advice. Source: CCP § 416.50, archived copy of leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, May 1, 2025.

ZIP Codes that cross the city line

None of Rancho Cordova's three main ZIP Code areas stops at the city limits. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file breaks them down by land area:

  • 95670: about 78% inside the city. Most of the remainder is Gold River, an unincorporated Census place.
  • 95742: about 42% inside the city. Most of the rest, roughly 57%, isn't in any Census place at all.
  • 95827: a little under 30% inside the city. The rest is split among Rosemont, La Riviera, Mather and land outside any place.

The city also reaches a small corner of 95655, the Mather ZIP Code area.

The mailing city on an envelope isn't proof of where an address sits. Addresses in 95827 often read "Sacramento," and the court itself lists its Juvenile Courthouse as 9605 Kiefer Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95827. Give us the full street address and unit, and we work out where it is. ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes.

Which courthouse gets a Rancho Cordova case

Rancho Cordova has no courthouse of its own, so its cases are filed in Sacramento:

  • Civil: 500 G Street, 2nd floor. The civil front counter windows are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Small claims cases, and evictions asking up to $35,000: the Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle, Monday through Thursday only.
  • Family law and probate: 3341 Power Inn Road.
  • Juvenile dependency and juvenile justice: 9605 Kiefer Boulevard.

Larger evictions, above $35,000, are filed with the Civil Division. Hours differ by building, which matters when a Rancho Cordova filing and a service attempt are planned for the same day. Ridgeway's business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, though the building opens at 8:00 and closes at 5:00. The Juvenile Courthouse keeps the same 8:30 to 4:00 weekday business hours. For counter filing, drop box rules and e-filing, see our Sacramento County court filing page. Getting the server to the right door

Rancho Cordova addresses range from apartment complexes and single-family streets to office parks with several buildings on one lot. What the server needs differs by type:

  1. Office parks and business suites. Building number, suite, the company name on the door, and the name of a manager or receptionist if you have one. A lobby directory doesn't always list every tenant.
  2. Apartment communities. Building and unit number, the leasing office name, and any gate access you know about.
  3. Houses. Whether the person usually leaves early or works from home, a vehicle description, and any side gate or dog.
  4. Unincorporated edges in 95742. Whether the road is private, a description of the property, and a second address in case the first doesn't work.

The Letter of Instruction on the Service Request has room for all of it. Don't hold back details because they seem minor.

Businesses with an office in Rancho Cordova

Many companies with Rancho Cordova offices are registered somewhere else. For a corporation or LLC, look up the agent for service of process on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online and send us the agent's name and address. If it's a registered agent company, see our pages on CSC and CT Corporation. The full set of options is in our guide to serving a corporation in California.

Can I drop papers at the sheriff's office in Rancho Cordova instead?

Yes. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Civil Bureau is at 2969 Prospect Park Drive, Suite 200, Rancho Cordova, with public hours that end at noon on Mondays and Fridays and at 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, plus a weekday drop box from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sheriff's page says you remain responsible for filing the proof of service with the court. How do I serve the City of Rancho Cordova in a lawsuit?

A city is a public entity. Under CCP § 416.50, a summons is served on a public entity by delivering the summons and complaint to the clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of its governing body. Tell us who the papers name and we serve the right office. This is general information, not legal advice.

Is Gold River part of Rancho Cordova?

No. Gold River is a separate unincorporated Census place, but it shares the 95670 ZIP Code area with the city. About a fifth of that ZIP Code's land is Gold River. Both are in Sacramento County, so the court is the same. We serve Gold River addresses too.

Where do Rancho Cordova small claims cases get filed?

At the Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle, Sacramento. Its small claims and landlord/tenant counters are open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.–5 p.m., and closed Fridays. Evictions asking up to $35,000 go there too. Source: saccourt.ca.gov, archived copies, April and June 2026.

The papers say Sacramento, CA 95827. Could that be Rancho Cordova?

It could. The Census Bureau puts a little under a third of the land in the 95827 ZIP Code area inside Rancho Cordova, and the rest in Rosemont, La Riviera, Mather and unincorporated land. A street address, not the city on the envelope, tells us where it is.

Is Mather inside Rancho Cordova?

Mather is its own Census place, about 3.3 miles from Rancho Cordova's center. Its 95655 ZIP Code area overlaps the city only slightly. Either way, papers for a Mather address are served the same way and the case belongs in Sacramento Superior Court.
