Elverta is an unincorporated community in northern Sacramento County, near Rio Linda and about 7.8 miles from our office on El Camino Avenue. It has no city government. The Census Bureau counts it as a Census-designated place of about 8.5 square miles, and Sacramento County provides its services. We serve summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document at Elverta homes and businesses.
Three Sacramento courthouses, by case type
The Sacramento County Superior Court doesn't send cases to the courthouse nearest the filer. It sorts them by case type, so an Elverta matter can land in one of three buildings. Straight-line distances are from the center of Elverta:
| Case type | Courthouse | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| General civil, and unlawful detainers over $35,000 | Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse, 500 G Street | about 9.7 miles |
| Small claims up to $12,500; unlawful detainers up to $35,000 | Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle | about 11.7 miles |
| Family law and probate | William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse, 3341 Power Inn Road | about 12.2 miles |
Civil filing moved to 500 G Street in April 2026. Its facility page lists general civil trials but excludes unlawful detainer, small claims and family relations matters, which stay at the other two buildings. The courthouse has 53 courtrooms between the 3rd and 17th floors, named by floor and by position from west (A) to east (D), so courtroom 3A is on the west side of the third floor.
Self-represented Elverta residents with a civil case can get help at Civil Self-Help Services, Room 250 on the second floor at 500 G Street. It's open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., and Thursday mornings only. Street parking around the courthouse is metered through the ParkMobile app, and the pay stations take cards only.
Our Sacramento County court filing service files Elverta cases in all three buildings. The Sacramento County hub covers the rest of the county.
95626 runs into Placer and Sutter counties
Elverta's ZIP Code reaches past the county line in two directions. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file gives the 95626 area about 37.7 square miles of land:
- about 21.7 square miles in Sacramento County
- about 9.6 square miles in Placer County
- about 6.4 square miles in Sutter County
The Elverta CDP itself covers about 8.5 of those square miles. So "Elverta, CA 95626" on a lease or a demand letter doesn't settle which county the property is in. Check the parcel's county before you choose a sheriff or decide where a new case belongs.
On the Placer or Sutter side, three things shift. The Sacramento County Sheriff won't be the sheriff for the address. In a Sacramento small claims case, a defendant served in another county gets the 20-day service deadline instead of 15. And a new case against someone living there may belong in that county's court; see the Placer County and Sutter County hubs.
A private server isn't limited by county. Any adult who isn't a party may serve papers anywhere in California, so we take 95626 addresses on all three sides. The who can serve papers guide explains the rule.
Elverta small claims at Carol Miller
Small claims cases asking for up to $12,500 must be filed at the Carol Miller Justice Center. The public counter there is open Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed on Fridays. That schedule catches people out.
The court's drop box at Carol Miller accepts traffic, small claims and unlawful detainer papers without a wait in line. But papers left on a Friday aren't filed until the next Monday. If something has to be filed on a Friday, the court sends you to the Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse on Power Inn Road, which accepts those papers that day.
Once filed, the claim has to be served. California's self-help guide sets the deadline at 15 days before the hearing, or 20 days if the defendant is in a different county. Substituted service has to begin 10 days before that deadline. The server's proof goes to the court at least 5 days before the hearing.
How the claim gets served matters. The self-help guide lists your options: a friend or relative who isn't in the case, the sheriff in some counties, or a professional process server. Some courts also offer to mail the claim by certified mail for a $15 fee. The guide warns that this often fails for individuals, because the person may not pick up the letter, the signature may be unreadable or someone else may sign. It tends to work better for a business's agent for service of process.
Carol Miller also has night court on the second Wednesday of each month, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., or the second Thursday if the Wednesday is a court holiday. Counter help covers traffic, small claims and unlawful detainers, and small claims trials run in person and by video. The Advisory Clinic for Small Claims and Unlawful Detainer, on the third floor, takes calls at 916-875-7846, and the court's mediation service for those cases is at 916-875-7843. The lot in front of the building sells a $5 day pass from machines that take bills and cards, and parking is free with a DMV disabled placard or plate.
Papers to serve in Elverta?
Elverta evictions and video hearings
An unlawful detainer for an Elverta rental asking for $35,000 or less goes to Carol Miller. After service, the California Courts self-help guide gives the tenant 10 court days to answer if the papers were handed over, skipping weekends and court holidays. After substituted service or posting plus mailing, the tenant has 10 calendar days from the mailing and then 10 court days. Service through Safe at Home allows 15 court days. The guide adds that each tenant named in the case files a separate Answer if their defenses differ, usually on form UD-105, and that a landlord can ask for a default as soon as the deadline passes. This is general information, not legal advice.
Sacramento's unlawful detainer division has a set procedure for video hearings:
- Notify the other side at least 10 court days, and no later than 5 court days, before the hearing.
- File form RA-010 in the same window, by mail or in the Carol Miller drop box.
- If you oppose the other side's request for a remote trial, file form RA-015 at least 5 court days before, and no later than noon on the court day before.
- Send evidence to the court and the other side at least 3 business days before the hearing. The court prefers email to udvideohearing@saccourt.ca.gov, with the case number, hearing date and time in the subject line.
If a remote appearance is granted, the party's witnesses appear remotely too. A party appearing remotely needs a device with video and audio unless the court gives written permission, at least 3 days before, to appear by phone. Evidence sent by mail needs a proof of service on form POS-030, and the court may not return evidence after the hearing, so send copies, not originals.
The division also orders the parties to try to settle before the hearing and points them to the court's mediators. For what changes in 2027, see the AB 747 guide.
Filing by mail from Elverta
The unlawful detainer clerk's office is in Room 200 at Carol Miller. Papers can be filed there in person, through the drop box or by mail. The court files mailed documents as of the date it receives them. Mark the envelope with the department the papers are for.
Internet kiosks in Room 200 are available for case research only; the court says e-filing kiosks aren't available. For civil cases at 500 G Street, copies cost 50 cents a page in the records viewing rooms, Rooms 210 and 240, using copy cards bought from dispensers in Room 101. At Carol Miller, the first-floor copiers charge 25 cents a page. If you'd rather not make the trip, see document retrieval.
Family law and probate on Power Inn Road
Divorce, custody, support and probate cases from Elverta go to the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse. The building houses the Family Law and Probate Divisions, the Self-Help Center, Family Court Services and the Family Law Facilitator. A free shuttle runs every 15 minutes or so between the Power Inn light rail station and the courthouse, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays. The visitor lot east of the building charges $2 for the first two hours and $1 per hour after that, up to $8 a day.
When we serve a petition or a request for order on an Elverta party, we return the signed proof for you to file. Our proof of service guide shows which form goes with each kind of paper.
Sheriff or private server
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Civil Bureau is at 2969 Prospect Park Drive in Rancho Cordova, about 12.5 miles from Elverta. It encourages requests through its E-Services Portal, which also shows the status of an existing file. Paper requests need a signed SER-001, plus an SER-001A for writs, and its drop box is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The bureau's page reminds requesters that filing its proof of service or declaration of due diligence with the court is their job.
For evictions, once the sheriff serves the writ of possession, the tenant has 5 days to move out before a lockout.
Collecting a judgment from an Elverta debtor
After judgment, levies go through the same Civil Bureau. Its page sets out a few rules that decide whether a levy can happen at all:
- The writ has to name the debtor properly. For a business, that means its legal entity, such as "a corporation" or "a partnership." A "dba" alone isn't a legal entity, and the sheriff can't enforce a writ that lists only a trade name.
- A bank levy needs the name and physical address of the branch where the debtor's account is held, plus the original writ of execution (form EJ-130) and supporting papers where they apply, such as a spousal affidavit or an affidavit of identity.
- Fees and deposits are paid in advance. They're added to the judgment, and in most cases the sheriff is entitled to its fee whether or not the levy succeeds.
The bureau serves judicial process only. It won't deliver late-payment notices, invoices or other letters that aren't court papers.
With us, you send the papers on a Service Request, add what you know in the Letter of Instruction and choose Rush or Standard. Status updates come by email, and we return a signed proof of service when service is complete. We make no guarantees for service. If the Elverta address is out of date, skip tracing can look for a current one.
