Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document in Antelope, the unincorporated community at the northern edge of Sacramento County. We also file the Sacramento Superior Court paperwork that goes with them, so one request can cover filing and service. Our office on W El Camino Avenue is roughly 10 miles away.
Send the documents on a Service Request, up to 5 PDFs, or email them to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. If the deadline is close, call 855-582-5776, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Antelope has no city government
Antelope is a Census Designated Place. That's the Census Bureau's term for a named community that never incorporated, so there's no mayor, council or city attorney. Sacramento County runs local services. Law enforcement comes from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, whose North Division page names Antelope among the communities it patrols, along with Foothill Farms, North Highlands, Rio Linda, Elverta, Carmichael, Fair Oaks and Orangevale. The division's patrol officers work out of the Garfield Station.
This affects papers in three ways:
- Local government as a party. A lawsuit or claim that involves a road, a park or a code issue in Antelope names Sacramento County or the special district involved. Ask your attorney whether a government claim has to come first.
- Venue. A defendant who lives in Antelope lives in Sacramento County, which is usually where the case belongs. Placer County starts only a few miles north, so check the county before filing against a neighbor across the line.
- The proof of service. It records the street address where the papers were delivered, so write that address on the request exactly as it appears in your documents, unit number included.
One ZIP Code, almost all Antelope
Antelope is one of the few Sacramento County communities that lines up with a single ZIP Code area. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file puts about 6.43 of the 6.5 square miles of land in ZIP Code 95843 inside Antelope. The rest is a thin edge: about 0.07 square miles in North Highlands and about 0.01 in Foothill Farms.
That's simpler than most of the county, but two details still matter on a Letter of Instruction:
- The full street suffix. Way, Court and Circle versions of one street name can sit blocks apart, so copy the suffix and house number exactly.
- Apartment and townhome complexes. Give the unit number, and if you know it, the building letter or the parking area. A gate or call-box code saves an attempt.
Nearby places with their own ZIP Codes, such as Foothill Farms, North Highlands and Citrus Heights, are also in Sacramento County. Roseville, about 4.4 miles away, is in Placer County, and that difference changes small claims deadlines, as explained below.
Which Sacramento courthouse takes an Antelope case
The Sacramento court assigns buildings by case type. Straight-line distances below are measured from Antelope's Census center point:
| Case type | Courthouse | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Civil lawsuits and petitions | Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse, 500 G Street, Sacramento | about 11.7 miles |
| Small claims up to $12,500; evictions up to $35,000 | Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle, Sacramento | about 11.6 miles |
| Family law and probate | William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse, 3341 Power Inn Road, Sacramento | about 12.1 miles |
At 500 G Street, the civil clerk is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on court days, and the building opens at 7:00 a.m. The facility page lists general civil trials and pretrial motions there, but not unlawful detainer, small claims or family relations matters. It has 53 courtrooms between the 3rd and 17th floors, named by floor and position: 3A is on the west side of the third floor, and the letters run west to east through D. Civil Self-Help Services is in Room 250 on the second floor. Its hours are 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with mornings only on Thursday. Copies in the records viewing rooms, Rooms 210 and 240, cost $0.50 a page with a copy card bought in Room 101.
At Carol Miller, the counter runs 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The building is closed Fridays, and anything left in its drop box on a Friday isn't filed until the next court day. The facility page lists Departments 81 to 84 on the first floor and 86 to 88 on the third. Parking in the front lot is a flat $5 a day.
Small claims from Antelope: count the days
The Sacramento small claims page caps cases at $12,500 and sends them all to Carol Miller. Larger claims go to the Civil Division. Small claims can be e-filed, and the court also offers remote appearances and a mediation program.
Service timing is where Antelope plaintiffs most often run short. The California Courts self-help guide sets these rules for delivering the claim:
- 15 days before the court date when the defendant is in the same county where the case was filed.
- 20 days before the court date when the defendant is in a different county. An Antelope plaintiff suing a business or person in Roseville or Rocklin falls under this rule, because both cities are in Placer County.
- 10 extra days for substituted service. If personal delivery fails and the papers have to be left with another adult and mailed, that must happen 10 days before the deadline above.
- The proof goes back early. File the Proof of Service, form SC-104, at least 5 days before the hearing.
If the date can't be met, the guide says a Request to Postpone Trial (form SC-150) can be filed 10 or more days before the court date. The plaintiff can't deliver the claim personally. A friend, the sheriff in some counties, or a process server can. For more on who qualifies, see who can serve papers in California.
Send us the hearing date with the claim, so we can schedule the attempts with those deadlines in mind.
Papers to serve in Antelope?
Antelope rentals: from summons to writ
Landlords and property managers in Antelope file eviction cases at Carol Miller when the case asks for $35,000 or less, per the court's facility page. Once the summons and complaint are served, the tenant's time to answer depends on how service happened. California Courts says it's 10 court days after personal delivery, not counting weekends and court holidays. After substituted service or posting, it's 10 calendar days plus 10 court days, counted from the day after the mailing. Posting a summons needs a court order under CCP § 415.45.
If the landlord wins, a private server's role ends at the judgment. The Sheriff's Civil Bureau enforces a writ of possession. Its page sets out the requirements:
- A signed Request for Service, form SER-001, with every request for service or levy.
- The fee deposit, paid in advance, unless a court order waives the Sheriff's fee. Any unused part is refunded.
- Lead time. Documents should reach the office at least 10 days before the service expiration, unless the rules for that process say otherwise.
- Fees are owed either way. In most cases the Sheriff is entitled to its fee whether or not the service or levy succeeds, and Sheriff fees are added to the judgment.
The Civil Bureau is at 2969 Prospect Park Drive, Suite 200, Rancho Cordova, with a drop box open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. Notices to quit, the summons and complaint, and other papers before judgment can be served by anyone 18 or older who isn't a party, and that's where we come in.
Family law and probate for Antelope households
Divorce, custody, support, guardianship and estate cases go to the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse on Power Inn Road, which houses the Family Law and Probate Divisions in Departments 120 through 135. The Self-Help Center, the Office of Family Court Services and the Family Law Facilitator's Office are in the same building.
A few details from the court's facility page help when a client has to go in person:
- Business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Self-Help Center opens at 8:30 a.m. on weekdays and again from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
- The Children's Waiting Room, Room 111, takes children ages 1 to 12, mornings and afternoons on weekdays. It isn't available to witnesses or support people.
- Copiers in Rooms 101, 113 and 11 charge $0.25 a page and take coins and small bills, not cards.
- Parking in the city lot east of the courthouse is $2 for the first two hours and $1 for each hour after, up to $8 a day.
Family law papers have to be served by an adult who isn't a party. In the Letter of Instruction, tell us about children at the address, shared housing or any safety concern, and give the hearing date. Our proof of service guide covers form FL-115 and the other family law proofs.
Getting a server to an Antelope door
The more the server knows before the first attempt, the fewer trips it takes. For an Antelope address, send:
- Full name and any other names used, plus a photo or description if you have one.
- Working hours. A person with a day job is usually easier to find early in the morning or in the evening.
- A workplace address, with the employer name and shift, as a backup.
- Vehicles, if you know them. A car in the driveway tells the server the timing is right.
If the party is a company, look up its agent for service of process on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online, and send that name. Our page on serving corporations and LLCs explains the options, including agents such as CSC and CT Corporation.
Filing and service on one Antelope request
Since every Antelope case lands in a Sacramento courthouse, filing and service often go together. We can file the complaint at 500 G Street or Carol Miller, in person or by eFiling, then serve the conformed copies in Antelope. That order matters: the copies served should carry the case number and filing stamp the court assigned, and a hearing date if one was set at filing. When the court issues a summons, we serve that issued summons with the complaint and any notices the court requires. See Sacramento County court filing, and for records from an older case, document retrieval.
When the address no longer works, skip tracing looks for a newer one. Our posts on finding a defendant in California and serving a subpoena cover two common next steps. Get status updates by email.
