Elk Grove had 176,124 residents in the 2020 Census, more than any city in Sacramento County except Sacramento itself. The Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 is 185,007. As a city it's young: Elk Grove incorporated on July 1, 2000, and the city describes itself as the first in California to incorporate in the 21st century.
We handle Elk Grove papers from our office at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833, about 14.9 miles away in a straight line. Summons and complaint packets, deposition subpoenas, dissolution petitions, restraining orders, landlord and tenant notices: attach them to a Service Request, or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. For questions, call 855-582-5776, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Elk Grove cases are heard in Sacramento
The city has no courthouse. Every location on the Sacramento Superior Court's list carries a Sacramento address, so an Elk Grove plaintiff files in one of these buildings:
- New civil complaints and motions: 500 G Street, the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse.
- Small claims, and evictions asking for $35,000 or less: the Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle. It's closed on Fridays.
- Divorce, custody, support and probate: the William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse, 3341 Power Inn Road.
An eviction that asks for more than $35,000 in damages goes to the Civil Division rather than Carol Miller. Our Sacramento city page describes each building in more depth. Sources: saccourt.ca.gov locations and unlawful detainer pages, archived copies dated June 2026.
Older Elk Grove files may name a closed building
Many Elk Grove matters started years ago: a judgment being enforced, a support order being modified, an estate being reopened. Papers from before spring 2026 often list the Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse at 720 9th Street. The court's notice says that building is now permanently closed to the public, civil operations moved to 500 G Street, and every courtroom had moved there by April 27, 2026.
The case number stays the same. Only the filing address changed. If you need copies from an older file before you serve, our document retrieval service pulls them, and the new papers then go out on the same request. Source: saccourt.ca.gov new courthouse notice, archived copy, May 10, 2026.
Three ZIP Codes, three different maps
Elk Grove mail runs through three ZIP Codes, and none of them lines up neatly with the city limits. The Census Bureau's 2020 file shows how much of each ZIP Code area's land falls inside the city:
| ZIP Code area | Land inside Elk Grove | What's in the rest |
|---|---|---|
| 95758 | About two-thirds | About 8% is inside the city of Sacramento; the remainder isn't in any Census place |
| 95624 | Just under half | Almost all unincorporated land outside any Census place |
| 95757 | About 16% | Mostly unincorporated land; a small piece is the Franklin Census place |
What this means in practice: "Elk Grove, CA 95757" on a lease or a credit application can be a house on a city street, or it can be a rural property miles outside the city. Both are served the same way and both cases still land in Sacramento Superior Court, because the court covers the whole county. What changes is how much the server needs to know before driving out.

Names on the papers that aren't separate towns
Laguna and Laguna West show up on older leases, loan documents and court files as if they were their own towns. Neither is a Census place; both sit inside Elk Grove city limits in the 95758 area. We serve them as Elk Grove addresses under either name.
Florin and Vineyard, just north, are different. They're unincorporated Census places outside the city, and we serve both. The court is the same Sacramento County court for all of them.
Papers to serve in Elk Grove?
What helps on an Elk Grove Letter of Instruction
The Letter of Instruction is where you tell the server what you already know. For Elk Grove, these details save the most trips:
- Subdivision homes: the house number as written on the papers, any second unit or casita on the lot, side gates, dogs, and which vehicles are usually in the driveway.
- Rural parcels in 95757 and 95624: a parcel or lot number if it appears in the file, whether the road is private or gated, how the house looks from the road, and whether more than one home shares the property.
- Apartments: building letter and unit number, and the leasing office name, so the server can get past a pedestrian gate without waiting on a resident.
- Workplaces: employer name, shift times and a supervisor if you know one. When nobody answers at home during the day, a work address is often the better second try.
If someone in your office already knocked once, write down what happened. "Spouse said he works nights" changes when we go.
Small claims and eviction papers from Elk Grove
Small claims and most evictions run through the Carol Miller Justice Center, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. That Friday closure matters when an Elk Grove landlord is counting days. Plan any filing at that building for Thursday afternoon at the latest.
The same building houses the court's Small Claims Advisory Clinic, 916-875-7846, which helps people preparing their own cases. For the service step, our guides on who can serve papers in California and the proof of service explain what has to happen before the hearing, and the 2027 changes to service rules are covered in our AB 747 guide. Family law papers for Elk Grove households
Divorce, custody and support cases from Elk Grove are filed at the Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse, 3341 Power Inn Road. Its business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. The Self-Help Center there is open 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, and again 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, for people handling a case without a lawyer.
The petitioner can't hand the papers to the other spouse personally. Upload the petition, summons and blank response forms to the Service Request, describe the other parent's schedule, and say whether children live at the address so the server can plan a respectful time to knock. File in Sacramento, serve in Elk Grove, one request
A lot of Elk Grove work starts with the filing. Sacramento's civil e-filing page says e-filing is optional for all parties until further notice, so we can file at the 500 G Street counter or electronically, whichever suits the case. Once the court issues the summons, the packet goes straight to service at the Elk Grove address.
Put both steps in the Letter of Instruction and pick Court Filing plus Process Service on the Service Request. Our Sacramento County court filing page and the California court e-filing guide cover the filing side. Source: saccourt.ca.gov civil e-filing page, archived copy, July 22, 2026.
Elk Grove businesses and their agents
A storefront or warehouse in Elk Grove is often a branch of a company registered somewhere else. For a corporation or LLC, the party to serve is usually its agent for service of process, which you can find on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online. If the agent is a registered agent company such as CSC or CT Corporation, we serve at that company's office. Our guide to serving a corporation covers the other methods.
When the Elk Grove address has gone stale
Addresses pulled from an old lease or a years-old judgment can be out of date. If the attempts show the person has left, ask about skip tracing. We look for a current address and, with your approval, send the papers back out on the same request. Read how to find a defendant in California for what to gather first.
