Rancho Mirage is a charter city in the Coachella Valley, with 16,999 residents at the 2020 Census. Its city website lists a council-manager government and a charter effective December 25, 1997. The whole city fits in one ZIP Code area, 92270, and that ZIP Code is all the Riverside Superior Court needs to route a case.
Owners occupy most Rancho Mirage homes. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts 7,383 owner-occupied units and 1,620 renter-occupied ones, and 5,245 more (±418) held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use, out of 15,026 housing units. For a process server, the second number is the one that changes the plan. Rancho Mirage requests are handled from our Sacramento office, about 438 miles north in a straight line.
Where Rancho Mirage cases go
Riverside doesn't publish one list for everything. It issues separate administrative orders for civil, family law and probate filings, each listing ZIP Codes by courthouse. For 92270 they agree on two buildings:
Palm Springs Courthouse, 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way. About 6.2 miles from Rancho Mirage's Census center point. Under the civil order effective August 1, 2026 (revised July 8, 2026), it takes Rancho Mirage's:
- unlimited and limited civil cases
- unlawful detainers, including ones large enough to be unlimited
- small claims
- civil harassment, workplace violence and postsecondary school violence petitions (CCP §§ 527.6, 527.7 and 527.8)
- name and gender change petitions
- judgment debtor exams, dangerous dog petitions, structured settlement transfers and emancipations
The probate order effective December 23, 2024 adds probate, at the courthouse's Probate Division, (760) 393-2617.
Larson Justice Center, 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio. About 12.5 miles away. The family law order effective July 8, 2024 sends Rancho Mirage divorce, custody and support cases there, and adoptions and freedom from parental control petitions too.
A few case types skip the desert. Complex, class action and CEQA cases go to the Riverside Historic Courthouse, 4050 Main Street, about 56 miles west. Mental health proceedings go there from every ZIP Code. Asset forfeiture and altered vehicle petitions go to the Corona Courthouse.
Inside the Palm Springs Courthouse
The court's Palm Springs page, read in a July 2026 archived copy because the court's site blocks automated reading, lists four matters served: evictions, small claims, civil and probate. Its four departments, PS1 through PS4, are all on the first floor. The clerk's office is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, but phone help stops at 2:00 p.m.
The drop box is the useful detail for a late filing. The page says it's available until 4:00 p.m., and anything deposited after 4:00 is processed the next court day under California Rules of Court, rule 2.210. If a Rancho Mirage filing has to be stamped today, it has to be in the box before 4:00. Check the live page before relying on that; the court can change it.
Under Riverside's Local Rule 3118, parties with counsel in limited and unlimited civil cases, evictions included, file electronically; self-represented parties can still use the counter or the drop box. Our Riverside County court filing page explains how a filing can be added to a service on the same request.
Family cases in Indio
The Larson Justice Center's page, in a September 2026 archived copy, lists family law, criminal, traffic and juvenile, with the same 7:30 to 4:00 counter hours and 2:00 p.m. phone cutoff as Palm Springs. Rancho Mirage petitioners file there, and the respondent is served wherever they can be found, which for a part-year resident may be another county or another state.
For a respondent with a Rancho Mirage address, tell us whether they live there year-round. If not, give us the other address and the months they're usually in the desert.
One ZIP Code, almost one city
The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file shows an unusually close fit between Rancho Mirage and 92270:
- About 98% of the land in 92270 is inside Rancho Mirage city, and the rest lies outside any city.
- About 99% of the city's land is in 92270. The remaining sliver falls in 92276, the ZIP Code the court's orders list for Thousand Palms.
Both 92270 and 92276 go to the same courthouses, so filing isn't affected. On the ground, the Census file puts about 61% of the 92276 land in the Thousand Palms Census-designated place and about 25% in Cathedral City; less than 1% is in Rancho Mirage. Unincorporated Thousand Palms is governed by the County of Riverside, not a city. That matters when the city itself is the party or a city ordinance is part of the claim.
Gated communities and country clubs
When a Rancho Mirage address sits inside a gated community or a club with its own entry rules, those rules belong to the community. The best thing a Service Request can do is give the server everything the gate will ask for:
- The community or club name, and which entrance to use if there's more than one.
- How the resident is listed on the call box or guard list, which may be a spouse's name or a trust.
- Any authorization the resident's side has given, such as a code or a guest pass. Don't send codes you aren't entitled to share.
- Another place to find the person: an office, a club they're known to use, or a home outside the valley.
If the gate doesn't let the server through, the attempt still counts as information. We record it, email you what happened, and the next attempt goes to the second address.
Papers to serve in Rancho Mirage?
Second homes and seasonal schedules
With roughly a third of the city's housing units held for seasonal or occasional use, many Rancho Mirage defendants and witnesses have a primary home elsewhere. Before the first attempt, ask your client:
- Is this the person's main home, and if not, where is?
- What months are they usually here?
- Does a property manager or HOA office know when the unit is occupied?
- Is there an office or business address in the valley?
From January 1, 2027, under AB 747, good-faith attempts at personal delivery on three different days at three different times show reasonable diligence before papers are left with another adult (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). At a house that's empty for the summer, those attempts can take longer to set up, and our AB 747 guide explains what the new rule covers. We make no guarantees for service.
Rancho Mirage rentals and evictions
The ACS counts about 1,600 rented homes in the city, and every eviction from one of them is filed in Palm Springs. Some Rancho Mirage rentals are seasonal or furnished, and the tenant's name may not match the booking. Send the filed summons and complaint, the notice, each adult occupant's name, and the community's gate details.
A tenant handed the summons in person has 10 court days to answer, according to the state court self-help page. Substituted service or posting gives more time, and posting needs a court order under CCP § 415.45. Our proof records the method and date.
Small claims in Palm Springs
Rancho Mirage small claims are filed at the Palm Springs Courthouse. An individual can claim up to $12,500, and the state court self-help page says the claim must reach the defendant at least 15 days before the court date, or 20 days if the defendant is in another county. A defendant whose main home is in Orange or Los Angeles County gets the longer window. The plaintiff can't serve; the server completes form SC-104.
Estates, conservatorships and protective orders
Rancho Mirage probate, guardianship and conservatorship petitions are filed with the Probate Division in Palm Springs under the December 2024 order. That order also lets two kinds of petition be filed at any courthouse in Riverside County: elder or dependent adult abuse restraining orders under Welfare and Institutions Code § 15657.03, and CARE Act proceedings. So a family protecting an older Rancho Mirage resident can file in Palm Springs, in Indio or wherever is closest that day.
Probate notices often go to relatives who live outside the valley, so list every heir or interested person with an address. A protective order is different: the restrained person has to be served personally with the filed request, any temporary order and the hearing notice. Send a photo, the car, the person's routine and the hearing date.
Subpoenas for medical and treatment records
The city's website lists Eisenhower Health, the Hazelden Betty Ford Center and the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center among the institutions based in Rancho Mirage. A records subpoena to a provider is served on its custodian of records. When the records are a patient's, CCP § 1985.3 requires the patient, as the consumer, to be served with a copy of the subpoena and a notice of privacy rights before the records are produced, and treatment records can carry federal limits of their own. Send us the subpoena, the consumer notice and every address that needs service, and we track each one on the same request.
Serving the city or a business
For the City of Rancho Mirage, CCP § 416.50 lets the summons go to the clerk or the head of the governing body. The city's website gives City Hall's address as 69-825 Highway 111, at the southwest corner of Highway 111 and Frank Sinatra Drive. A suit for money against the city generally comes after a government claim is presented and acted on (Government Code § 945.4).
When a resort, club or medical office is owned by a corporation or LLC, look up the agent for service of process on bizfile Online; it may be a commercial agent such as CSC or CT Corporation, with an address outside the desert. Our serving corporations page covers the rules, and skip tracing can find a defendant who has left the valley.
