Indio is where the desert's family law cases are heard, but not where its civil cases go. The Larson Justice Center on Oasis Street takes divorce, custody and support filings from across the Coachella Valley. An Indio lawsuit, eviction or small claims case is filed 17 miles west, at the Palm Springs Courthouse.
We serve papers in Indio and in the unincorporated communities beyond it. Every request is coordinated from our Sacramento office, about 447 miles away in a straight line, and the papers are served where the person lives or works. Valpro Attorney Services doesn't have staff or an office in Indio.
The Larson Justice Center
The court's page for the Larson Justice Center, in a September 2026 archived copy, gives the address as 46-200 Oasis Street and lists four kinds of matters: family law, criminal, traffic and juvenile. The building has three floors and 14 courtrooms, from Departments 1A and 1B on the first floor through 3M to 3T on the third. The parking note on the same page refers to the "Indio Courthouse complex," with public parking close to the courthouses there.
The clerk's office is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, with phone hours ending at 2:00 p.m. A drop box takes papers until 4:00 p.m., and anything left later is processed the next court day. Check the live page before a deadline, since the court's site blocks automated reading.
Electronic filing at Larson works differently from Palm Springs. The court's self-help page sends family law and probate documents through its eSubmit service, while civil, eviction and small claims papers go through eFiling. The same page lists court computers in the Larson lobby, available 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays.
For family law, the court's order effective July 8, 2024 names the "Indio Court, Larson Justice Center" as the Desert Region filing location. Indio ZIP Codes 92201, 92202 and 92203 are on its list, along with Coachella, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Thermal, Mecca and the rest of the valley. Adoptions and petitions to free a child from parental custody follow the same regional split.
A family law petition can't be handed over by the person who filed it. Another adult who isn't a party serves it, and the proof goes on form FL-115. When you send an Indio family law Service Request, tell us whether children live at the address, whether a restraining order is in place, and whether the respondent has a lawyer. That shapes when and where the server makes the attempt. This is general information, not legal advice.
Custody mediation before an Indio hearing
A contested custody or visitation request in an Indio case usually goes to Family Court Services first. In Riverside County, a Child Custody Recommending Counselor (CCRC) runs that mediation under Family Code § 3183. If the parents don't reach an agreement, the counselor writes a recommendation for the judge.
The court's Family Court Services page asks each parent to prepare:
- A parenting course. A free online course at uptoparents.org, with the printed certificate brought to the appointment.
- The CCRC questionnaire, completed and printed.
- Time. Arrive at least 30 minutes early for parking and security, and plan on up to 2 hours. Both parents must attend. Children and other third parties can't join the session.
Two rules affect paperwork. The counselor considers only documents filed with the court and won't accept unfiled ones. And the report usually reaches the court at least 2 court days before the hearing. So a declaration meant for the counselor should be filed and served early. A parent unhappy with a counselor can ask for a different one for future appointments; the Family Court Services Director reviews those requests and answers in writing within 30 days under Local Rule 5155(J). This is general information, not legal advice.
Papers to serve in Indio?
Why an Indio civil case goes to Palm Springs
Under the civil filing order effective August 1, 2026, the Palm Springs Courthouse at 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way is the desert's civil court. For Indio ZIP Codes it takes:
- unlimited civil cases
- limited civil cases
- evictions, whatever the amount in dispute
- small claims
- civil harassment and workplace violence restraining order petitions
- name change and gender change petitions
Probate follows the same path under the court's probate order, effective December 23, 2024. Complex and class action cases from Indio are filed at the Riverside Historic Courthouse, about 68 miles west.
The case number can mislead you. The court's 2024 reference guide lists the prefixes INC (civil) and INU (unlawful detainer) as heard at the Palm Springs Courthouse, not in Indio. Family law prefixes such as IND and FLHE belong to Larson. Local Rule 3115 says a case is usually heard in the courthouse where it was filed, but the court may move it, so we check the register of actions before filing anything in an older case.
Lawyers filing an Indio civil case in Palm Springs e-file it under Local Rule 3118. When a document is exempt from e-filing, the original has to reach the Clerk's Office by the close of business on a court day. A party with a fee waiver who e-files is also exempt from the court fees for e-filing. Source: Local Rule 3118, read on the court's site October 31, 2026.
The court's online search helps with that history. It lists Indio civil cases from 1991 and Indio small claims from April 1994, and family law cases from almost every courthouse back to April 1992. A name search costs $1 if you run it, and the results show case information rather than the documents. For copies of the filings themselves, see document retrieval.
Thermal, Mecca and the east valley
Southeast of Indio, the valley's unincorporated communities include Thermal and Mecca. The court's civil order lists Thermal (92274 and 92275) and Mecca (92254) with Indio in each of its civil case columns, and the family law order lists them with the Larson Justice Center. Distances from the Larson Justice Center, in a straight line to each community's Census point:
| Community | Approximate distance from Larson |
|---|---|
| Thermal | 8 miles |
| Mecca | 13 miles |
| Oasis | 14 miles |
| North Shore | 22 miles |
These are the places where our turnaround note applies. Both our Rush and Standard service levels say remote areas are subject to different timelines. Indio's own neighborhoods are not remote in that sense. Addresses on rural roads far from the nearest town are.
What helps most for an east valley address:
- A description of the property, not only the street number. Rural parcels can be hard to match to a door.
- The nearest cross streets or a map pin.
- An employer or crew if the person works on a farm or packing operation, with shift times.
- A second address, such as a relative's home in Indio or Coachella.
You can still choose Rush for these addresses, but if a hearing is close, call 855-582-5776 first so we can tell you what's realistic. We make no guarantees for service.
Indio households and timing
Indio has part-time residents too, though a smaller share than Palm Desert. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts 3,987 homes (±411) held for seasonal or occasional use among 37,179 housing units, about 11%. About a third of occupied homes are rented. For an Indio respondent who winters elsewhere, give us both addresses and the dates you know.
Paper service in Indio civil cases
Riverside's Local Rule 3118 makes e-filing mandatory for represented parties in limited and unlimited civil cases, including unlawful detainers. It also says a represented party serves a self-represented party by non-electronic means, unless that person agrees otherwise. In an Indio collection case or eviction where the defendant has no lawyer, that means later papers still go out on paper. Our Riverside County court filings page covers the filing side, and our post on same-day court filing explains how tight deadlines are handled.
Elder or dependent adult abuse restraining order petitions are one exception to the regional map. The probate order says they may be filed at any courthouse in Riverside County.
Businesses in Indio
A corporation or LLC operating in Indio is served through the agent for service of process it names with the Secretary of State (Corporations Code §§ 1502 and 17701.13). For a farm company, a packing house or a retailer with an Indio location, that agent may be at a corporate office in another city. Look it up on bizfile Online first. If the listed agent is gone, see our page on serving corporations. For questions about who may serve which papers, our guide on who can serve papers in California lays out the rules.
Nearby cities
Indian Wells is about 5.5 miles west, Coachella about 6 miles southeast, La Quinta about 6 miles southwest and Palm Desert about 7 miles west. All four share Indio's courthouse assignments. At the far eastern edge of the county, Blythe has its own courthouse for most local cases. For the whole county, see Riverside County process serving.
Start an Indio Service Request with the documents attached, and add the property details in the Letter of Instruction.
