The address
CSC publishes a list of its agent offices by state. Its California entry, read on October 28, 2026:
Corporation Service Company Which Will Do Business in California as CSC-Lawyers Incorporating Service 2710 Gateway Oaks Drive, Suite 150N Sacramento, CA 95833-3505 Sacramento County
That's the same ZIP Code as our office at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833, so service on CSC is local work for us. Source: CSC agent office addresses, checked October 2026.
The address on CSC's list is where CSC receives papers. The address that counts for your case is the one on your defendant's own Secretary of State record. Check it on bizfile Online before you send the papers out, because companies change agents.
Why so many cases end up at Gateway Oaks Drive
California corporations and LLCs must name an agent for service of process with the Secretary of State. The agent can be a California resident or a corporation that has filed a certificate under Corporations Code § 1505. That certificate lists the agent company's California office and the employees there who are authorized to accept process.
CSC is one of those companies. When a business names CSC as its agent, papers in a lawsuit against that business go to CSC's California office. A registered agent's job is to receive legal papers for the company and send them on to it.
How service on CSC works under California law
Hand delivery is what makes it service. For a corporation that names a corporate agent, Corporations Code § 1701(b) says delivery by hand to any person named in the agent's latest § 1505 certificate, at that agent's office, is valid service on the corporation. Corporations Code § 17701.16(b) says the same for LLCs.
In practice, that means:
- Confirm the agent. Pull the defendant's bizfile record and check that CSC is the current agent.
- Prepare the papers for the defendant. The summons and complaint name your defendant. CSC isn't a party.
- Deliver during business hours. CSC's service of process page notes that a registered agent must be available during normal business hours at a physical office. Bring the full set for each defendant CSC represents.
- Complete the proof. The proof of service names the defendant as the party served, the person at CSC who took the papers and their capacity, and the code section for the type of entity, such as CCP § 416.10 for a corporation.
Statutes checked October 2026 against the Legislature's published code text. This is general information, not legal advice.
What to get right on the proof of service
The details that matter most are on the proof itself:
- The defendant's exact name, as bizfile shows it, including "Inc.", "LLC" or a foreign entity's full name.
- Who accepted. The name and title of the CSC employee who took the papers.
- The entity basis. Corporation (CCP § 416.10), partnership or association (CCP § 416.40), or LLC (Corporations Code § 17701.16).
- One set per defendant. If CSC is the agent for several defendants in the same case, each one needs its own summons and complaint and its own proof.
From January 1, 2027, AB 747 adds photo requirements to proofs of personal service. At a place of business, at least one photo of each attempt must show the door, or the entrance of the specific office if the door isn't reasonably accessible (CCP § 417.10(a)(2)(B), operative January 1, 2027). Read how AB 747 changes service in 2027 and the proof of service guide.
When CSC is the agent for a subpoena
A records subpoena aimed at a company that uses CSC should command the company to produce its records, not CSC. CSC receives papers for its client. It isn't the company that holds the records. Name the entity as the subpoena respondent and deliver it to the entity's agent like any other service on that company.
If CSC is no longer the agent
Sometimes bizfile shows CSC but the company has since changed agents, or an agent has resigned. Check the record again on the day you serve. If no agent can be served with reasonable diligence, you can try the officers listed in CCP § 416.10(b), and then ask the court for an order to serve through the Secretary of State's Sacramento counter. Our guide to serving a corporation in California walks through each step.
