Coachella sits about 6 miles southeast of Indio, and its court cases split two ways. Family matters stay close, at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. Lawsuits, evictions, small claims and estates travel 23 miles west to Palm Springs.
We serve papers at homes, farms and businesses in Coachella and across ZIP Code 92236, and we can file in either courthouse when the papers come back.
One ZIP Code, mostly outside the city
Coachella uses a single ZIP Code, 92236, but the ZIP covers far more ground than the city. The Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP Code area file gives 92236 about 61.9 square miles of land. Here is how it divides:
| Part of 92236 | Land area | Share |
|---|---|---|
| City of Coachella | 24.4 sq mi | about 39% |
| Vista Santa Rosa (Census-designated place) | 1.9 sq mi | about 3% |
| City of Indio | under 0.1 sq mi | under 1% |
| Outside any city or Census place | 35.5 sq mi | about 57% |
That last row matters. More than half of the ZIP's land isn't in any town the Census Bureau names. A "Coachella, CA 92236" address may sit on a ranch road or a farm parcel miles from downtown, with county services rather than city ones.
For the courts, it makes no difference. Riverside's filing orders work by ZIP Code, and 92236 follows the Coachella row whether the address is inside the city or out in the fields. For service, it makes a big difference, as the section on outlying addresses below explains.
Where Coachella cases are filed
The Riverside Superior Court's civil order effective August 1, 2026, its family law order effective July 8, 2024 and its probate order effective December 23, 2024 all list 92236 by name as Coachella. Distances are straight-line from the city's Census center point.
| Case type | Courthouse | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited and limited civil | Palm Springs Courthouse, 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way | 23.1 mi |
| Evictions of any size | Palm Springs Courthouse | 23.1 mi |
| Small claims | Palm Springs Courthouse | 23.1 mi |
| Civil harassment and workplace violence petitions | Palm Springs Courthouse | 23.1 mi |
| Name and gender change petitions | Palm Springs Courthouse | 23.1 mi |
| Probate, guardianship, conservatorship | Palm Springs Courthouse, Probate Division | 23.1 mi |
| Family law, adoptions | Larson Justice Center, 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio | 4.7 mi |
| Complex and class action cases | Riverside Historic Courthouse, 4050 Main Street | 73.5 mi |
A few smaller civil filings also go to Palm Springs from 92236 under section (h) of the civil order: judgment debtor examinations, dangerous dog petitions, structured settlement transfers and petitions to emancipate a minor.
The long trip is the complex case. Anything a judge designates provisionally complex, plus class actions and CEQA writs, goes to downtown Riverside, more than 70 miles away.
Palm Springs for lawsuits, evictions and small claims
For most civil work, a Coachella plaintiff deals with one building: the Palm Springs Courthouse. A contract claim, a collection case, a small claims dispute and an eviction all start there, whatever the dollar amount. Section (e) of the order spells out that unlawful detainers go to Palm Springs even when the amount makes them unlimited.
Two practical points come from that distance:
- Plan around one courthouse. If you send a Coachella eviction and a related small claims case together, both are filed in Palm Springs, so one run can cover both.
- Allow time for the return. Once a Coachella defendant is served, the proof of service still has to reach Palm Springs. Our Riverside County court filings service can handle that leg.
The Larson Justice Center for family cases
Divorce, legal separation, custody, support and parentage cases from Coachella are filed in the Desert Region at the Larson Justice Center, 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio. The family law order lists 92236 there, and its adoption section lists the same courthouse for adoptions and petitions to free a child from parental custody.
At under 5 miles, Larson is the closest court to Coachella. The respondent can be served anywhere in California, at home, at work or somewhere else. The server can't be the person filing. An adult who isn't part of the case delivers the petition and signs the proof, usually form FL-115.
The family law summons, form FL-110, prints its warning in both English and Spanish. That leads to one of the most useful facts for a Coachella request.
Spanish-speaking households and the papers
Most Coachella residents speak Spanish at home. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 counts about 34,100 people age 5 and older who speak Spanish at home, out of about 40,950, or 83%. About 14,900 of them, roughly 36% of all residents 5 and older, speak English less than "very well."
What that means for service:
- The summons forms already include Spanish. Judicial Council form SUM-100 for civil cases, SUM-130 for evictions and FL-110 for family law each carry the notice to the defendant in English and Spanish.
- Translating other papers is a legal question. A process server delivers documents. Whether a complaint or an attachment should be translated is up to you and your attorney.
- Tell us the language anyway. A note that the person speaks only Spanish, or that a family member usually answers the door, helps the server explain who they are and what they're leaving.
The server can say what the papers are and that they come from a court. The server can't explain the case or give legal advice, in any language.
Papers to serve in Coachella?
Evictions for Coachella rentals
About a third of Coachella's occupied homes are rented. The same survey counts about 4,500 renter-occupied units out of about 12,500 occupied homes, roughly 36%.
Every Coachella unlawful detainer is filed in Palm Springs. After the summons and complaint are served, the tenant's time to answer depends on how they got the papers, according to the California Courts self-help guide:
| How the tenant was served | Time to file an answer |
|---|---|
| Handed the papers, or papers left nearby after a refusal | 10 court days, starting the day after service |
| Substituted service, or posting, plus mailing | 10 calendar days after the mailing, then 10 court days |
| Through the Safe at Home program | 15 court days |
Court days leave out Saturdays, Sundays and court holidays. This is general information, not legal advice. For the 2027 change in how diligence is shown before substituted service, see our AB 747 guide.
Small claims papers bound for Palm Springs
A Coachella small claims plaintiff files in Palm Springs, and CCP § 116.340 sets out how the defendant may be served:
- By the clerk, by mail with a return receipt. Service is complete on the date the defendant signs the receipt, so an unsigned card doesn't count.
- In person, by an adult who isn't a party.
- By substituted service, which in small claims doesn't require a personal delivery attempt first.
Service has to happen inside California, with exceptions for an out-of-state owner of property in the state and for nonresident drivers in California accidents. The deadline before the hearing is 15 days for a defendant in the county where the case is filed and 20 days for one outside it. The proof goes to the court at least 5 days before the hearing.
For a defendant who works irregular hours, such as seasonal shifts, start early. A missed attempt costs more when the hearing is 23 miles away.
Hearings without the drive to Palm Springs
The court's remote appearances page covers more than motions. For an evidentiary hearing or a trial, a party can ask to appear remotely:
- With at least 15 business days' notice of the hearing date, give notice of the remote appearance at least 10 business days before it.
- With less notice, including restraining order hearings, make sure the other parties receive notice at least 5 court days ahead.
- Use form RA-010, served on every party entitled to notice and filed with the court.
- To object, another party serves and files form RA-015.
The court can also set a hearing as remote on its own, with notice. Either way, notice of a remote appearance is itself something that may need to be served. We can serve it along with other papers.
Estates and guardianships
The probate order sends 92236 to the Probate Division of the Palm Springs Courthouse, phone (760) 393-2617. That covers wills, trusts, guardianships and conservatorships, plus petitions to approve a settlement for a minor.
Probate notices often go to relatives spread across the valley and beyond. Give us each person's name and address, and tell us which ones need personal delivery and which only need mailed notice. The court's online index lists almost all probate cases from July 1994 on, which helps when an older estate resurfaces.
Farm and outlying addresses in 92236
Away from downtown, 92236 includes Vista Santa Rosa, a Census-designated place covering about 16 square miles in total, plus open farmland with no named community. Thermal's Census point is about 4.5 miles from Coachella's, and Mecca's is about 9 miles. Those two have their own ZIP Codes but use the same courthouses.
Both our Rush and Standard service levels carry the same note: remote areas are subject to different timelines. Downtown Coachella is not remote. A parcel at the end of a dirt road, a worker housing site or a packing shed with no clear street number can be. We make no guarantees for service.
Help the attempt land on the first trip:
- A physical description of the property, not only the number.
- Cross streets or a map pin.
- A work location and shift, if the person works in the fields or a packing operation.
- A second address, such as a relative in Coachella, Indio or Thermal.
If the address is out of date, skip tracing can help find a current one.
Serving the City of Coachella
The city's website lists City Hall at 53990 Enterprise Way, Coachella, CA 92236, phone 760-398-3502. Under CCP § 416.50, a city is served by delivering the summons and complaint to its clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or another head of its governing body. Tell us which office you want served, and send the case caption so the server can say what the papers are.
Court records for a Coachella case
The court's records page lists Palm Springs civil cases online from September 1993 and Palm Springs small claims from the same month. Indio civil cases reach back to May 1991. New evictions are confidential for their first 60 days, except to parties who can name a plaintiff, a defendant and the property address.
Copies run $1 a page for the first 5 pages, then 50 cents a page, up to $50 for any one document. For certified copies or a file that has to be pulled at the counter, see document retrieval.
