La Quinta's court business runs in two directions. Almost everything civil, from a contract suit to an eviction to an estate, is filed at the Palm Springs Courthouse to the northwest. Family law is the exception, and it goes to the Larson Justice Center in Indio, about 6 miles away. For service, the bigger challenges are gates and seasons.

La Quinta requests are handled from our Sacramento office, roughly 450 miles away, and each one goes to a server who makes the attempts in town.

How the Riverside orders route La Quinta cases

The Riverside Superior Court assigns courthouses by ZIP Code in three administrative orders. For La Quinta's 92247, 92248 and 92253, they say:

MatterCourthouseMiles from central La Quinta
Unlimited and limited civilPalm Springs Courthouse, 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way18.3

Probate, guardianship, conservatorshipPalm Springs Courthouse, Probate Division18.3
Family law, adoptions, freedom from custodyLarson Justice Center, 46-200 Oasis Street, Indio5.6

Complex cases and class actions go to the Riverside Historic Courthouse from every ZIP Code in the county. The civil order took effect August 1, 2026, the family law order July 8, 2024, and the probate order December 23, 2024. Distances are straight lines from the city's Census center point to geocoded courthouse addresses.

La Quinta isn't unusual in the valley. The same orders send unlimited civil cases from Indian Wells, Indio, Coachella, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City and Thermal to Palm Springs. In the other direction, the family law order puts every one of those communities, Palm Springs included, in the Desert Region that files at Larson in Indio. So a Palm Springs couple and a La Quinta couple divorce in the same building, and a La Quinta landlord and a Palm Springs landlord evict in the same building. Only the family docket moves east.

The Palm Springs Courthouse

The court's page for the building lists evictions, small claims, civil and probate as the matters served, with four departments, PS1 through PS4, on the first floor. Building hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the clerk answers the phone at (760) 393-2617 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A drop box takes documents until 4:00 p.m., and anything left after that is processed the next court day.

Attorneys don't need to drive there for most civil filings. The court's civil eFiling page says Local Rule 3118 makes eFiling mandatory for represented parties and optional for self-represented ones, with certain documents exempt. A document e-filed before midnight on the due date counts as timely. Our Riverside County court filing page covers counter filings when you need one.

Family law in Indio

The family law order lists La Quinta's three ZIP Codes in its Desert Region, which files at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. Divorce, legal separation, custody, support and parentage cases for La Quinta are filed there. So are adoptions and petitions to free a child from parental custody.

The respondent then has 30 days after service to file a response. Family summons service is usually proved on form FL-115. If the other spouse has moved to Palm Desert, Indio or out of the valley, they're served at the new address and the case stays in Indio. Indio is 6.3 miles from central La Quinta.

Gated communities and country clubs

When the address is in a planned community behind a staffed gate or a call box, remember that a process server has no special right to pass it. What gets the server to the door is information:

  • Gate code or guard procedure. Some guard houses call the resident, some accept a name on a visitor list.
  • HOA or management company. Its name and phone number, in case the gate staff need approval.
  • Exact address inside the community. Street, house number and any lot or villa number.
  • A phone number for the resident, if you have one, so the server can arrange a meeting at the gate if needed.

If a guard refuses entry, the server records the attempt with the time and the reason, and we work out the next step with you. Options include serving the person away from home, at work or another regular stop. Substituted service at the residence, leaving papers with a competent adult and mailing a copy, depends on first showing reasonable diligence (CCP § 415.20(b)). From January 1, 2027, three attempts on three different days at three different times of day show that diligence. Our AB 747 guide has the details. We make no guarantees for service.

Seasonal homes and timing

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 to 2024 counts about 24,770 housing units in La Quinta. Of those, about 6,852, roughly 28%, are vacant and held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use. Not every one of those units belongs to an absent owner you're trying to serve, but the count is reason enough to check occupancy before sending a server.

That changes the plan. If you know the person's other address, send it, along with the months they're usually in La Quinta. If they live in another California county the rest of the year, we can attempt there instead. If they live outside California, service follows different rules, and the case may need a different approach. When the La Quinta house is a vacation rental or empty for the season, repeated attempts there waste time, so tell us whatever you know about occupancy.

Papers to serve in La Quinta?

The 92253 ZIP Code area

The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file puts about 96% of La Quinta's land in 92253, with most of the remainder in 92274, a ZIP Code area the court's orders list under Thermal. Going the other way, about 84% of 92253's land is inside the city, about 1.5% is in the Vista Santa Rosa census-designated place, and roughly 14% is outside any city or named community.

For civil filings and probate, Thermal follows Palm Springs and for family law it follows Indio, just like La Quinta, so the split doesn't change where a case is filed. For the server, a 92253 or 92274 address on the unincorporated edge can be a rural lot, so add directions if you have them.

La Quinta evictions

Every unlawful detainer from La Quinta's ZIP Codes is filed at the Palm Springs Courthouse, limited or unlimited. Once the tenant is personally served, they have 10 court days to file an answer, according to the California Courts Self-Help Guide. If the tenant is avoiding service, a landlord can ask the court for permission to post the summons on the property and mail a copy (CCP § 415.45). That application needs a credible record of attempts.

For a short-term or vacation rental with a tenant who has stopped paying, tell us whether the tenant actually lives at the unit or only stays there part of the time. It affects where the server should try first.

Small claims for La Quinta

A La Quinta small claims case is filed in Palm Springs. The plaintiff can't serve the claim, but any adult who isn't a party can, and the clerk can also mail it by certified mail. The defendant must be served at least 15 days before the hearing if they live in Riverside County, or 20 days if they live elsewhere (CCP § 116.340). For a seasonal resident who has gone back to another county, the 20-day period applies. The server's proof goes on form SC-104.

Restraining orders and debtor examinations

La Quinta residents file civil harassment and workplace violence petitions in Palm Springs, along with the other restraining orders under CCP §§ 527.6, 527.7 and 527.8. Domestic violence requests go through the family law side in Indio. Either way, the court sets a hearing, and the restrained person has to receive the petition, the notice and any temporary order before it. Send the hearing date, a description, and the places the person is usually found, especially if they split time between La Quinta and another home.

After a money judgment, an application to examine a judgment debtor from La Quinta's ZIP Codes is filed in Palm Springs too. The order to appear has to be personally served on the debtor at least 10 days before the examination date (CCP § 708.110(d)). For a debtor who spends summers away, check the calendar before choosing that date.

Probate notices and estates

When a La Quinta estate is opened at the Palm Springs probate division, heirs and other interested people get notice of the hearing, often by mail. Some estate disputes, though, call for personal service on a beneficiary, a trustee or someone holding estate property. If that person is in La Quinta only part of the year, send both addresses and the probate hearing date so the attempts can be timed before the deadline.

When the City of La Quinta is the party

A summons naming the city is delivered to its clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of its governing body, under CCP § 416.50. That usually means the City Clerk. Claims for damages against a city typically go through the government claim process before any lawsuit, so confirm that step with your attorney. Tell us which official the papers name; the proof of service will show who accepted them.

Remote hearings

The Riverside court uses Zoom for remote appearances. Its page says the court strongly encourages remote appearance at non-evidentiary civil hearings, such as motions and case management conferences, and that a party intending to appear remotely has to notify the opposing parties before the hearing. For an out-of-area client with a Palm Springs or Indio hearing, that can save a long trip.

Companies with La Quinta addresses

A company with a La Quinta store, office or resort is usually served through an agent for service of process, not at the front desk. Find the agent on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online and send us the name and address as listed. National companies often use CSC or CT Corporation. Our serving corporations page covers the rules. If a person or business has moved, skip tracing can search for a current address.

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Why is a La Quinta civil case filed in Palm Springs when Indio is closer?

Because the Riverside court's civil order says so. Its Where to File Civil Documents order, effective August 1, 2026, lists La Quinta's ZIP Codes 92247, 92248 and 92253 under the Palm Springs Courthouse for unlimited and limited civil cases, evictions, small claims, civil restraining orders and name changes. The Larson Justice Center in Indio, about 5.6 miles away, takes La Quinta's family law cases.

Where are probate papers for a La Quinta estate filed?

At the Probate Division of the Palm Springs Courthouse, 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, phone (760) 393-2617. The court's probate order, effective December 23, 2024, puts ZIP Codes 92247, 92248 and 92253 in its Desert Region, which files at Palm Springs.

The person lives in La Quinta only in winter. Where should you try?

Send every address you have, with the months the person is usually at each one. Census estimates show about 28% of La Quinta's housing units are vacant and held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use, so an off-season attempt at a second home often finds nobody there. If they live in another state most of the year, tell us, because service outside California follows different rules.

Can a server get into a gated La Quinta community?

Only by lawful access. A server can't force entry past a gate or a guard. Send a gate code or the guard house procedure, the name of the HOA or management company, and the resident's phone number if you have it. If access is refused, the server notes the attempt and we talk with you about next steps.

How long does a La Quinta tenant have to answer an eviction?

Ten court days after personal service, according to the California Courts Self-Help Guide. The eviction is filed at the Palm Springs Courthouse, about 18 miles northwest of central La Quinta, including cases large enough to be unlimited.

How do you handle La Quinta from Sacramento?

You submit online or by email, and a server makes the attempts at the La Quinta address. Our office is at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833, about 450 miles away. Call 855-582-5776 or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.
