The Census Bureau records Yucca Valley as an incorporated town rather than a city, and only Apple Valley shares that status in San Bernardino County. For legal work, the important fact is that Yucca Valley shares a courthouse with the rest of the Morongo Basin. The Joshua Tree District, about 8 miles east, takes most of the filings a Yucca Valley household or landlord will need. General civil suits and probate travel much farther, to San Bernardino and Fontana.

Our Sacramento office, 419 miles northwest, takes each Yucca Valley request and assigns it to a server who makes the attempts in the basin.

The Joshua Tree courthouse and what it takes

The San Bernardino Superior Court's Where Can I File page lists the Joshua Tree District at 6527 White Feather Road. Its filings for Yucca Valley include:

  • Family law, adoptions and freedom from custody, emancipations
  • Domestic violence, civil harassment, elder abuse, gun violence, workplace violence and postsecondary school protective orders
  • Limited landlord-tenant cases (evictions claiming $35,000 or less)
  • Small claims
  • Name change petitions and petitions for the return of firearms
  • Felony, misdemeanor and traffic matters

The courthouse page gives building hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Civil, family law, landlord-tenant and small claims questions go to (760) 974-3047, and criminal and traffic to (760) 974-3048. Both lines answer from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the court lists JoshuaTree@sb-court.org as the email. The page also links online appointment booking for family law, small claims and landlord-tenant filings, which saves a wasted trip to the counter.

What leaves the basin

Three kinds of Yucca Valley matters are filed outside the Morongo Basin. Miles are straight-line distances from the town's Census center point.

MatterWhere it's filedMiles
Civil, limited and unlimitedCivil Division, San Bernardino Justice Center, 247 West Third Street49.6
Unlimited landlord-tenant (over $35,000)Same Justice Center civil division49.6
Probate, guardianship, conservatorshipFontana District, 17780 Arrow Boulevard56.9
Child supportChild Support Division, Historic Courthouse, 351 North Arrowhead Avenue49.7

The probate assignment surprises people. The court's probate page says decedents' estates, trusts and conservatorships are filed and heard at the Fontana and Victorville Districts, and its Where Can I File page puts Yucca Valley on Fontana's list. A family settling an estate for a Yucca Valley home files in Fontana, and notice of the hearing goes to the interested people wherever they live.

The Justice Center's civil division also takes name change petitions and civil harassment orders for most of the county, but Joshua Tree accepts both for basin residents, so there's rarely a reason to make that drive for them.

The 92284 ZIP Code area is mostly outside the town

Yucca Valley's land lies almost entirely in one ZIP Code area, 92284. The reverse isn't true. In the Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file, only about 31% of the 92284 land area is inside the town. Roughly 10% falls in the Homestead Valley census-designated place, a sliver touches Joshua Tree, and close to 59% is outside any city, town or named community.

For filing, that split doesn't matter much, because the court names the Yucca Valley area and its unincorporated neighbors together under Joshua Tree. For service, it matters a great deal. A 92284 address can be a house on a paved town street or a lot miles out on a graded road. As our turnaround terms say, remote areas are subject to different timelines.

Getting the server to the right door

A server can't attempt service at a post office box, and a mailing address doesn't always lead to the front door of a house on a large lot. These details turn a long search into a single trip:

  • The physical street address, not only the mailing one. If you know only the box, say so, and ask about skip tracing.
  • An assessor's parcel number or map pin for addresses outside the town grid.
  • Road conditions and access. Paved, graded or sand; a locked gate; dogs on the property.
  • Cross streets and landmarks that would identify the right driveway.
  • Vehicles and work hours. Someone who works outside the basin may be home only early in the morning or in the evening.

From January 1, 2027, AB 747 changes how diligence is shown before substituted service: three attempts on three different days at three different times of day show reasonable diligence (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Each attempt goes into the server's record. Our AB 747 guide explains the new rules. We make no guarantees for service.

Small claims for Yucca Valley

A Yucca Valley small claims case is filed at Joshua Tree. The court's small claims page sets the claim limit at $12,500 for an individual and $6,250 for a business or other entity. Fees run $30 up to $1,500, $50 up to $5,000 and $75 up to $12,500. The clerk can mail the claim by certified mail for $15 per defendant, but service only counts if the defendant signs the return card.

When that's unlikely, personal service by an adult who isn't a party is the usual route. It has to be complete at least 15 days before trial if the defendant lives in San Bernardino County, or 20 days if not, and the court wants proofs of service filed 5 days ahead of the hearing. A defendant who has moved across the county line to Desert Hot Springs, 13.4 miles south in Riverside County, gets the 20-day period.

Yucca Valley evictions

Most residential evictions are limited cases, and Yucca Valley's go to the Joshua Tree District. A landlord claiming more than $35,000 files at the San Bernardino Justice Center instead. Either way, the tenant has 10 court days after personal service to answer, according to the California Courts Self-Help Guide.

If the tenant can't be found at the property after reasonable effort, the court can order posting of the summons on the premises with mailing, under CCP § 415.45. The judge will want to see the attempts. For an outlying rental, give the server the gate code and a key contact, and tell us if the unit is a trailer, guest house or room on a larger parcel.

Family law in the Morongo Basin

Divorce, legal separation, custody and parentage cases for Yucca Valley are filed at Joshua Tree, not in San Bernardino. The court's family law page says the right courthouse depends on where either spouse lives, and paternity cases follow where the child lives. One spouse must have lived in the county at least 3 months and in California at least 6 months before filing for divorce.

After filing, the other party is served with the summons, petition and any order to show cause, and the server completes the family law proof of service. If the respondent has left the desert, send every address you know. A California family summons can be served anywhere in the state.

Collecting a small claims judgment

Winning a small claims case in Joshua Tree doesn't put money in the plaintiff's hands. The court's fee table lists the next steps and their costs: $60 for an order of examination, $40 for a writ and $40 for an abstract. An order of examination requires the debtor to come to court and answer questions about income and property, and the order has to be personally served on the debtor before the date set. If the debtor has moved since the trial, send the newest address you have, or ask us to search for one first. The appearance date is printed on the order, so the server needs it to plan attempts well ahead of the deadline.

Restraining orders and criminal subpoenas

Civil harassment, elder abuse, workplace violence and gun violence petitions for Yucca Valley residents can all be filed at Joshua Tree, along with domestic violence requests in family law. Each one sets a hearing, and the person to be restrained has to receive the petition, the notice of hearing and any temporary order before that date. Send the hearing date with the papers so the server can plan attempts around it, and include a description and a vehicle if you have them.

Felony and misdemeanor cases from the basin are heard at Joshua Tree as well. A defense subpoena for a Yucca Valley witness needs the department, the date and time, and any phone or work address for the witness. Our post on serving a subpoena in California covers the general rules.

Land use and juvenile matters

Two less common case types follow their own lists. CEQA petitions for the desert region, which the court defines to include Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Landers and Twentynine Palms, are filed at the Civil Division of the Rancho Cucamonga District, 8303 Haven Avenue. Juvenile delinquency filings for the basin go to 900 East Gilbert Street in San Bernardino, and dependency cases from every community in the county go to 860 East Gilbert Street. When a dependency case requires notice to a parent living in Yucca Valley, we serve at the local address and return the proof to the juvenile court.

Hearings by video

The court's remote appearance page lists exactly one Joshua Tree courtroom, M4, for Zoom with audio and video. Remote appearances are allowed courtroom by courtroom at the judicial officer's discretion, and the courtroom must be told beforehand. Waiting until the morning of the hearing risks not being admitted. For a Yucca Valley party facing a long drive, that call is worth making early.

Papers for the Town and for local businesses

The Town of Yucca Valley is served like any public entity: delivery to the clerk, secretary, presiding officer or other head of its governing body (CCP § 416.50). Most damages claims against a town have to go through the government claim process first, so confirm that with counsel.

A business with a Yucca Valley storefront is served through its agent for service of process on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online. Small local companies often list the owner, sometimes at a home address elsewhere in the basin. Our serving corporations page covers the rules.

Yucca Valley process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Is there a courthouse in Yucca Valley?

No. The nearest is the Joshua Tree District at 6527 White Feather Road, Joshua Tree, about 8.3 miles east of the town's Census center point. The San Bernardino Superior Court lists Yucca Valley among the communities that courthouse serves, along with Joshua Tree, Landers, Pioneertown, Twentynine Palms, Johnson Valley and Morongo Valley.

Where do I file a Yucca Valley lawsuit over $35,000?

At the Civil Division of the San Bernardino District, inside the San Bernardino Justice Center at 247 West Third Street, about 50 miles west. The court's Where Can I File page lists Yucca Valley there for limited and unlimited civil cases. Joshua Tree takes name changes and restraining orders, but not general civil suits.

Where is a Yucca Valley probate or guardianship case filed?

At the Fontana District, 17780 Arrow Boulevard, Fontana, about 57 miles away. The court's list for probate, guardianship and conservatorship at Fontana includes Yucca Valley and the rest of the Morongo Basin. The probate phone at Fontana is (909) 521-3388.

My address is in 92284 but outside the town limits. Does that change anything?

Not for the courthouse. The court's lists name the Yucca Valley area and its unincorporated neighbors together under Joshua Tree. For service it can matter a lot: Census figures show most of the 92284 land area lies outside the town, and those parcels can be harder to reach. Send directions and a parcel number if you have one.

Can a Yucca Valley hearing be done by Zoom?

Sometimes. The court's remote appearance page lists one Joshua Tree courtroom, M4, as hosting Zoom audio and video. The judicial officer decides case by case, and the courtroom has to be told before the hearing date that you intend to appear remotely.

How do I serve the Town of Yucca Valley?

A summons against a public entity is delivered to its clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of its governing body under CCP § 416.50. For the town, that normally means the town clerk. Tell us which official the papers name, and the server will record who accepted them.

How do you handle Yucca Valley from Sacramento?

Requests come in online or by email, and a server makes the attempts at the Yucca Valley address. Our office is at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833. Call 855-582-5776, Monday through Friday, or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.
