The county seat, but not the court's main building

Auburn is where Placer County's government sits, and it still has working courtrooms. Most of the court's departments and offices are in Roseville, though. Here's how the Auburn and Roseville buildings divide up, according to the court's locations page:

BuildingAddressWhat's there
Historic Courthouse101 Maple Street, Auburn, CA 95603Departments 1–6 and a Clerk's Office
Juvenile Courthouse11270 B Avenue, Auburn, CA 95603Department 12 and a clerk's office for juvenile cases only
Hon. Howard G. Gibson Courthouse10820 Justice Center Drive, Roseville, CA 95678Departments 30–44, a Clerk's Office, Self-Help Center, Family Court Services and Jury Services

Roseville is about 16 miles southwest of Auburn, measured between the two cities' Census center points. The court uses one mailing address for both: P.O. Box 619072, Roseville, CA 95661-9072.

A notice of hearing names a department. If it's Department 1 through 6, the hearing is in Auburn. Thirty through 44 means Roseville. Check it before anyone drives.

What you can and can't do at the Historic Courthouse

The court's Historic Courthouse FAQ answers the questions filers usually have:

  • Filing: documents can be filed at the Clerk's Office on the second floor, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. After-hours filings go in the drop box near the Clerk's Office.
  • Case files: you can't request or view them here. Files are kept at the Gibson Courthouse in Roseville and the Tahoe City Courthouse, so a file review means a trip to one of those. Juvenile files are requested at the Juvenile Courthouse on B Avenue.
  • Security: everyone goes through weapons screening, and bags may be searched. The court suggests allowing an extra 5–10 minutes.
  • Parking: there's a small free lot in front, a public lot across the street on Auburn Folsom Road, and 3-hour parking on nearby streets.

One thing catches people out. The court's hours page lists both the clerk's office and the building itself at 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., so a counter filing has to be finished before 4:00, not started then. For anything later, the FAQ points to the drop box near the Clerk's Office, and attorneys can eFile.

The Juvenile Courthouse keeps split hours: its window is open 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00–4:00 p.m., closed over lunch.

Paper filings in Placer County: what the clerk expects

When a filing goes over the counter or into the drop box, the court's civil page sets out its filing rules:

  1. An original and 2 copies.
  2. Pre-punched paper, in the standard two-hole position.
  3. An addressed return envelope with enough postage, so the conformed copies can be mailed back.
  4. Format under the California Rules of Court.

Missing the envelope means waiting for the conformed copies or going back for them. When we file for you, we handle the copies and the return.

For phone questions, the court lists the Civil Division at (916) 408-6000, option 5, and the Family Division at the same number, option 6. Civil law and motion tentative rulings can be requested at (916) 408-6480, and oral argument at (916) 408-6481.

Attorneys e-file under Local Rule 10.27

Placer County requires electronic filing from lawyers. Local Rule 10.27 makes eFiling mandatory for attorneys and optional for self-represented litigants in civil and family law cases. The court's list of case types open for eFiling covers:

  • general civil, small claims, probate and mental health
  • divorce, legal separation and nullity
  • domestic violence, paternity, and child custody, support or visitation

Some documents are exempt, such as those requiring personal service on a judicial officer, or an original signature where the law doesn't allow an electronic one. Filings go through a certified electronic filing service provider.

So for a firm, an Auburn case is mostly electronic work. The paper side is serving the summons and the papers that come with it, which is still done in person. See our Placer County court filing page for how we take filings there, and the California court e-filing guide for the statewide picture.

An "Auburn" address isn't always in Auburn

Auburn is a small city. It had 13,776 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau estimates 13,847 for July 1, 2025. The Auburn mailing area is much bigger than the city. Two Census ZIP Code areas cover it:

ZIP Code areaInside Auburn cityElsewhere
95603 (about 36 square miles)About 19% of the landAbout 19% in North Auburn; about 63% outside any named place
95602 (about 50 square miles)About 1% of the landAbout 2% in North Auburn; about 5% in Lake of the Pines; about 92% outside any named place

North Auburn is a separate, unincorporated Census-designated place in Placer County. Lake of the Pines is a different story. The Census Bureau places it in Nevada County, across the county line. So a 95602 address that reads "Auburn" may actually be in another county.

For service, that matters less than you'd think. We serve the address where the person is. What it does affect:

  • Sheriff service: a sheriff serves in their own county, so a Nevada County address needs the Nevada County sheriff, not Placer's.
  • Small claims timing: the service deadline before a small claims trial is longer when the defendant lives outside the county where the case is filed. Check the form instructions for your case.
  • Your Letter of Instruction: note the exact street address and the nearest cross street or landmark. On rural roads the mailing name can be miles from the house.

Much of the outer part of 95602 and 95603 is rural. A foothill parcel can mean a long driveway, a missing house number or a gated private road, and remote areas are subject to different timelines. If the address is a ranch or a home off a dirt road, tell us before you choose Rush.

Serving a company with an Auburn address

For a corporation or LLC, the right party to serve is usually its agent for service of process, listed on the California Secretary of State's bizfile Online. A small Auburn business may name its owner as agent at a home address, while a larger one may use a registered agent company somewhere else in the state. We serve whichever address the record shows. See serving a corporation in California for the methods, including court-ordered service through the Secretary of State.

Can I look at a case file in Auburn?

No. The court's Historic Courthouse FAQ says files are kept at the Hon. Howard G. Gibson Courthouse in Roseville and the Tahoe City Courthouse, and must be requested and viewed at one of those two. Juvenile files are the exception: request them at the Juvenile Courthouse, 11270 B Avenue, Auburn. Source: placer.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.

How many copies does the Placer County clerk want?
