Nevada City is the seat of Nevada County, a small city of 3,152 residents in the 2020 Census and an estimated 3,174 on July 1, 2025. The main courthouse is here, and the court's local rules send it every county case that doesn't arise in the Truckee area, whether the parties live in town or out on a ridge road. We serve summonses, petitions, subpoenas, small claims, eviction papers and restraining order papers in the city and across western Nevada County, and we file at the Church Street courthouse.
Nevada City requests are handled from our Sacramento office, about 51 miles southwest in a straight line. Upload the papers on a Service Request, email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com, or phone 855-582-5776.
Why the county's cases come to Church Street
Nevada County's court has two branches, and the dividing line is a highway junction. Local Rule 2.05 sends any case arising from an occurrence or residence in the Truckee area to the Truckee Branch, and defines that area as eastern Nevada County, east of the intersection of Interstate 80 and Highway 20. Every other case properly venued in the county is filed in the Nevada City Branch.
In practice, that makes Nevada City the home court for:
- Nevada City and Grass Valley, which has no courthouse of its own
- The unincorporated west county, including the communities in the 95959 ZIP Code area
- Highway 20 corridor citations, which Rule 2.05(D) assigns to Nevada City
- Probate and juvenile dependency from anywhere in the county, since the Judicial Council describes the Truckee branch as handling all case types except those two

The courthouse and its hours
The Nevada City Courthouse is at 201 Church Street, Nevada City, CA 95959. The building is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, and the clerk's office from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Phone (530) 362-4309 during clerk's office hours, or submit questions through the court's online contact form at any time.
Everyone entering goes through a walk-through metal detector, and bags are X-rayed. The court also bans items that could be used as weapons, from pocket knives and scissors to glass bottles and knitting needles, so leave those in the car.
The Self-Help Center and Law Library share the address. Their hours are Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., and Friday 8:30 a.m. to noon. Source: Nevada County Superior Court locations and hours page, checked October 2026.
An old building with a replacement planned
The Judicial Council's project page is frank about the current facility. It says the courthouse was built in 1864, remodeled and expanded in 1900 and 1937, and joined in 1964 by a Courthouse Annex. It rates the courthouse as very high risk and the annex as moderate risk on a FEMA seismic screening, and lists a lack of an entrance lobby and limited room for security screening and jury assembly.
The replacement is a new six-courtroom courthouse of about 77,250 square feet in Nevada City, to consolidate everything now in the courthouse and the annex. In June 2025, the State Public Works Board approved the current U.S. Forestry Office as the preferred site. The project is in site acquisition, with construction estimated to begin in July 2031 and finish in June 2034. Until a move date is announced, use 201 Church Street on every notice and cover letter.
Filing at Church Street
Represented parties in Nevada County must e-file. Local Rule 1.06 made e-filing mandatory on July 1, 2022, through an approved electronic filing service provider, the court's portal or a system integration. Self-represented parties are exempt but encouraged to e-file, and they can also mail papers or drop them at the clerk's office. After hours, the court's drop box is just outside the courthouse lobby.
The rule has formatting points worth knowing before a Nevada City filing:
- Searchable PDF only. E-filed documents must be text-searchable PDFs.
- Bookmarks. Any document over 10 pages with multiple exhibits or sections needs bookmarks whose titles match the sections.
- Paper originals. Where an original has to be filed on paper, the court wants an electronic courtesy copy, and the original filed within 10 court days under California Rules of Court, rule 2.252.
- Big filings. A submission over 50 pages, counting exhibits and declarations, needs a printed courtesy copy with proof of electronic submission, delivered the same day.
Domestic violence and gun violence restraining order petitions can be e-filed for free on the court's portal, but only as the first filing in the case. Our Nevada County court filing service handles the e-filing and any counter work, and our post on court filing in California explains how we work with clerks.
Getting conformed copies back
Paper filers should read this rule before they leave the counter. Under Local Rule 1.06(B), the clerk endorses the original and one copy handed in with it. If you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with enough postage, the copies come back by mail. If you don't, they go into a pickup drop box at the clerk's office for the branch and department where the case was filed, and the court may purge them 30 days after filing.
When we file at the counter for you, we pick up the conformed set and send it back to you, so you can serve the endorsed copies.
Papers to serve in Nevada City?
The 95959 ZIP Code area is mostly countryside
The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file shows Nevada City sitting inside a single ZIP Code area, 95959. The city covers about 5.7 square kilometers. The ZIP Code area covers about 808. That leaves the rest of 95959 to unincorporated places and open land:
| Place in 95959 | Status | How much of it is in 95959 |
|---|---|---|
| Nevada City | Incorporated city | All |
| Graniteville | Unincorporated (CDP) | All |
| North San Juan | Unincorporated (CDP) | Part |
| Rough and Ready | Unincorporated (CDP) | Part |
| Washington | Unincorporated (CDP) | Part |
| Grass Valley | Incorporated city | A small edge; most of the city is in 95945 |
A "Nevada City, CA 95959" address can sit miles from downtown, on a dirt road or behind a ranch gate. The court stays the same, because every one of those places is in the Nevada City Branch's territory. The service plan changes. ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes.
Sending a Nevada City service
Your Letter of Instruction does most of the work on a rural address. Include:
- The endorsed papers. Summons, complaint or petition, and any order to show cause or notice of hearing.
- Directions past the pavement. Road names, mile markers, the color of a gate, or the name on the mailbox.
- Access notes. Locked gates, dogs, a caretaker, or a shared driveway.
- A workplace. For someone hard to find at home, a downtown or Grass Valley job site gives the server another place to try.
- The deadline. The hearing date, or the last day for service under your statute or court order.
Remote areas are subject to different timelines, which matters most for the far ends of 95959. Call us before choosing Rush for an address out there. Get every update by email.
Serving the city or county government
Nevada City is a county seat and an incorporated city, so a case can involve either government. CCP § 416.50 delivers a summons on a public entity to its clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of its governing body. For the city, its website lists City Hall at 317 Broad Street, phone 530-265-2496. Name the office or official on the Service Request so the server asks for the right person. Claims against public entities have their own deadlines, so check those first. This is general information, not legal advice.
Evictions and family cases from Nevada City
An unlawful detainer from Nevada City or Grass Valley is filed in the Nevada City Branch. After personal service, the tenant has 10 court days to file an Answer, according to the California Courts self-help guide, so serve as soon as the summons issues. Under the local family law rules, matters filed in or transferred to the Nevada City Branch go to the judge assigned to the family law department.
Ex parte applications in civil and probate matters are filed by 4:00 p.m. the court day before the hearing, under Local Rule 2.09. From January 1, 2027, AB 747 changes how service attempts and proofs are documented statewide; our AB 747 guide and proof of service guide cover the details.
Civil cases, mediation and corporate parties
The court's Civil Division page describes the cases it handles in Nevada City and Truckee: car accident injuries, wrongful termination claims, evictions from homes or commercial buildings, easement disputes, conservatorships and restraining orders. It also points out a rule that catches small businesses. A person may represent themselves in a limited or unlimited civil case, but a corporation that sues or is sued needs a lawyer.
Mediation and arbitration are available and may be recommended by the court. The court keeps a list of local mediators, its Civil Division page links to the Conflict Resolution Center of Nevada County, and its Self-Help Center can point self-represented parties to forms and guides. None of that changes service: the summons and complaint still have to reach the defendant before a case can move, and the proof of service still has to be filed.
If you aren't sure who can deliver the papers, our guide to who can serve papers in California walks through the rules.
Businesses and people who have moved
To serve a company, find its agent for service of process with the California Secretary of State. Our page on serving corporations explains the lookup, and the agent may be a registered agent firm outside the county. When a party has left a Nevada County address, skip tracing can turn up a current one before the next attempt.
