The river is the county line

The single most important fact about West Sacramento is the county. It's in Yolo County, not Sacramento County. The city has its own name, its own police department and its own city hall, the West Sacramento Civic Center at 1110 West Capitol Avenue. It's a short drive from Sacramento, but the court system is a different one.

That trips people up in a few predictable ways:

  • The wrong courthouse. A West Sacramento eviction, small claims case or divorce isn't filed at 500 G Street, Carol Miller or the Ridgeway courthouse. When it's filed in Yolo County, it goes to Woodland.
  • The wrong sheriff. If you want sheriff service at a West Sacramento address, that's the Yolo County Sheriff's Office, not Sacramento's.
  • The wrong local rules. Yolo's e-filing requirement and court procedures differ from Sacramento's. A filer used to Sacramento's optional e-filing will find Yolo requires it of attorneys.

Serving the papers works the same either way. From our office, a West Sacramento address is a shorter trip than much of Sacramento County.

The Yolo Superior Court in Woodland

Every Yolo County case type is heard in one building:

Yolo Superior Court, 1000 Main Street, Woodland, CA 95695.

The court's phone lines and windows are open 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Free public and ADA parking is listed at 525 6th Street and 625 6th Street. Civil, family, probate, small claims, unlawful detainer, criminal, juvenile and traffic matters all start there.

Woodland is about 14 miles northwest of West Sacramento, measured between the two cities' Census center points. For a West Sacramento filer, that's a real trip for one filing, so it can make sense to put the filing and the service on the same request.

Attorneys e-file in Yolo County

Yolo has required electronic filing since 2020. The court's eFile page says that effective August 17, 2020, it requires legal documents to be filed electronically in:

  • civil cases
  • family law cases
  • probate cases
  • later filings in criminal, juvenile and DCSS cases

Self-represented parties, called pro pers on the court's page, are exempt. The court strongly encourages them to use its File @ Home tool and the eFile tool instead of the counter. Filings go through an electronic filing service provider, and once you register with one provider, the court says you don't need to register again to switch.

Electronic filing doesn't replace service of the summons. Once the court issues it, the summons and complaint still go out by personal or substituted service. That's the part we handle in West Sacramento.

West Sacramento addresses and neighborhoods

West Sacramento had 53,915 residents in the 2020 Census. The city describes itself as about 22 square miles, incorporated in 1987, with a population just over 54,000. Three Census ZIP Code areas touch it:

ZIP Code areaHow it relates to the city
95691Covers about 79% of the city's land. About 44% of this ZIP Code area is inside city limits, and the rest extends into unincorporated Yolo County.
95605Entirely inside West Sacramento, including the Bryte and Broderick neighborhoods.
95620A large rural ZIP Code area centered on Dixon. Only a sliver of the city is in it.

A 95691 address isn't always inside the city. More than half of that ZIP Code area's land is unincorporated Yolo County. It's still Yolo County, so the courthouse doesn't change, but the property can look very different from a city street. For those outlying parcels, remote areas are subject to different timelines.

Bryte and Broderick are older neighborhoods inside the city, just west of the river. Both are about 2–3 miles straight-line from our office.

Papers to serve in West Sacramento?

New riverfront buildings, the Port and the industrial side of town

West Sacramento mixes older neighborhoods with large new development and a working industrial base. The city's own description points to three things that shape service there:

  • The Bridge District. The city says this riverfront area is developing quickly and will hold about 4,000 housing units at full build-out, along with offices and retail. Sutter Health Park, home of the River Cats, anchors it. New apartment buildings mean controlled lobbies, parking garages and unit numbers that matter. Give us the building name and unit.
  • Food industry facilities. The city describes West Sacramento as a hub for the food industry, with companies from around the world building facilities there. Serving an employee at a plant or distribution center goes better with the shift schedule and the name of a supervisor or HR contact.
  • The Port of West Sacramento. The Port's main cargo facility is the North Terminal at 2895 Industrial Boulevard. According to the city, SSA Marine has leased and operated the North Terminal's maritime facilities since July 1, 2013, and the main cargos are rice exports and cement imports. A port or terminal workplace usually has a controlled gate, so tell us who the person works for and where they report.

When the party is a company rather than a person, look up its agent for service of process on the California Secretary of State's bizfile Online. A plant manager usually isn't the right person to serve. See serving a corporation in California, and our pages on CSC Lawyers Incorporating Service and CT Corporation, two registered agents that turn up often.

Small claims for West Sacramento residents

Small claims cases from West Sacramento are filed with the Small Claims Division at 1000 Main Street, Woodland, (530) 406-6704, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. on weekdays. The court's page sets the limits:

  • $12,500 for a claim by a natural person.
  • $6,250 for a business or public entity.
  • No more than two small claims cases for over $2,500 each in a calendar year.

You can talk to a lawyer before the hearing but can't have one in the courtroom. The Small Claims Advisor answers questions about small claims cases at 530-207-4233.

The person suing can't serve the claim themselves. An adult who isn't a party has to do it and sign the proof. Our guides on who can serve papers in California and proof of service explain both steps.

If the person isn't at the West Sacramento address

Renters move, and new buildings fill up fast. If the attempts show the person has gone, ask about skip tracing. We look for a current address and, with your approval, send the papers back out. Read how to find a defendant in California for what to gather before you start.

Neighbors on both sides of the river

Is West Sacramento in Sacramento County?

No. West Sacramento is an incorporated city in Yolo County, on the west bank of the Sacramento River. The river is the county line there, so a case filed against a West Sacramento resident in Yolo County goes to the Yolo Superior Court at 1000 Main Street, Woodland, not to a Sacramento courthouse.

Where is the courthouse for West Sacramento cases?

Yolo County has one courthouse: the Yolo Superior Court, 1000 Main Street, Woodland, CA 95695. Its phone lines and windows are open 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Mon–Fri, and the court lists free public parking at 525 and 625 6th Street. Source: yolo.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.

Do I have to e-file a Yolo County case?

If you're represented, yes. Since August 17, 2020, the court has required eFiling in civil, family and probate cases, and for later filings in criminal, juvenile and DCSS cases. Self-represented parties are exempt but encouraged to use the court's File @ Home tool. Source: yolo.courts.ca.gov eFile page, checked October 2026.

My case is filed in Sacramento, but the defendant lives in West Sacramento. Is that allowed?

Serving across the county line is routine. A California summons can be served on a person anywhere in the state, so we can serve a Sacramento County case at a West Sacramento address. Whether the case belongs in Sacramento or Yolo is a venue question for the attorney or the filer, not something service changes.

What's the small claims limit in Yolo County?

The court's small claims page lists $6,250 for a business or public entity, or $12,500 for a natural person. You can't file more than two small claims cases for more than $2,500 each in a calendar year. The Small Claims Advisor is at 530-207-4233, for small claims cases only. Source: yolo.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.

Are Bryte and Broderick part of West Sacramento?

Yes. Bryte and Broderick are older neighborhoods inside the city of West Sacramento, in ZIP Code area 95605, just across the river from downtown Sacramento. Addresses there are West Sacramento addresses in Yolo County, whichever name the papers use.
