Davis had 66,850 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate is 66,110. It's a Yolo County city, but it isn't the county seat: that's Woodland, about 8 miles north, where the county's only courthouse stands. Our office at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833, is about 14 miles from Davis, straight-line across the Yolo Bypass.
Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document on people and businesses in Davis. We file Davis cases with the Yolo Superior Court in person or by eFiling, and we pull records from its files. Every request is handled from our Sacramento office.
Davis cases are filed in Woodland
There's no courthouse in Davis. A lawsuit against a Davis resident, a Davis small claims case or an eviction from a Davis apartment all go to the same building:
Yolo Superior Court, 1000 Main Street, Woodland, CA 95695.

The Civil Division lists three ways to get a copy of a document from a file: ask in person at the civil filing counter, send a letter with the copy and research fees and a self-addressed stamped envelope, or hire a private agency. For a case more than 10 years old, call the division first to check that the file is available. Phone status updates are available for civil cases, but not for small claims or unlawful detainer matters.
Yolo's electronic filing and service rule
Yolo's Civil Division page cites Local Rule 7: all documents in civil, probate and family law cases are filed and served electronically, except when personal service is required by statute or rule, and excluding ex parte applications. The rule dates to January 1, 2021. The court's eFiling page says self-represented parties are exempt from eFiling but encouraged to use its File @ Home tool.
Two things follow for Davis filers:
- Filings go electronic. If you're represented, your pleadings in a Yolo civil, probate or family case go in by eFiling. We file them for you, or take an exempt document to the counter in Woodland.
- The summons still gets served. Electronic service covers papers exchanged between parties already in the case. The summons and complaint, and anything else a statute requires to be served personally, still go out with a process server.
The court also returns a document unfiled if the correct filing fee isn't with it. See Yolo County court filing for more on filing there.
Papers to serve in Davis?
Serving UC Davis, its employees and The Regents
Legal papers aimed at UC Davis, its staff or the UC system have their own rules. The Office of the Campus Counsel publishes where each kind of paper should go. These details come from an archived copy of its page dated June 25, 2025 (the page itself was last updated April 30, 2025). The live page blocks automated reading, so confirm with the office before serving.
| What you're serving | Where the page says to serve it |
|---|---|
| Subpoena for UC Davis business records, or records about a current or former UC Davis employee | Office of the Campus Counsel, 350 Mrak Hall, Davis, CA 95616, 530-754-6295 |
| Subpoena about a current or former UC Davis Health employee | Health Information Management, 2315 Stockton Boulevard, MRB #12, Sacramento, CA 95817, 916-606-3281 |
| Subpoena for patient medical records | Health Information Management, same Sacramento address, 916-734-5205 |
| Workers' compensation subpoena | Office of the Campus Counsel, 350 Mrak Hall |
| Summons and complaint, or subpoena, naming The Regents of the University of California | UC Legal, Office of the General Counsel, Office of the President, 1111 Franklin Street, 8th Floor, Oakland |
The same page says individual people named as defendants should be served personally, not through a campus office. And when a subpoena requires someone to appear at a deposition or hearing on behalf of a campus department, the server should provide witness fees at the time of service, with a check payable to UC Regents dated the day of the deposition.
So a Davis service involving the university can mean three different addresses in three cities. Tell us which one applies in your Letter of Instruction, or send the papers and we'll ask. Our post on how to serve a subpoena in California covers the general rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
Serving students and renters in Davis
Students and renters can move between school terms, so a Davis request depends on current, specific details. Send these:
- Upload the papers on the Service Request, up to 5 PDFs, with your Billing Reference.
- Give the full address, including the building and apartment number.
- Add timing. Class schedules, work shifts, the hours they're usually home.
- Add identification. A photo or description, and a vehicle if you know it.
- Pick Rush or Standard. The turnaround for each level is shown on this page.
Each request gets a confirmation email, and every update comes in that thread. Reply to that email any time for an update. If the person has left town, skip tracing can look for a current address, and with your approval the papers go back out. We make no guarantees for service.
Davis ZIP Code areas
Two Census ZIP Code areas cover Davis: 95616 and 95618. 95616 includes the UC Davis campus, and both reach past the city limits into unincorporated Yolo County. A Davis mailing address doesn't always mean the property is inside city limits, but for court purposes it's all Yolo County.

The sheriff's lead time in Yolo County
The Yolo County Sheriff's Office Civil Division, 140 Tony Diaz Drive in Woodland, also serves civil process. Its public counter is open 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. on weekdays, every request needs a signed letter of instructions (form SER-001) and the fee or a fee waiver, and papers must arrive at least 10 days before the last day for service. If you're inside that window, send it to us as a Rush. Source: yolocountysheriff.com, checked October 2026.
