Murrieta has a large courthouse inside its postal boundary, and most Murrieta civil cases are not filed there. The Southwest Justice Center on Auld Road hears criminal, traffic and juvenile matters, civil harassment petitions and probate. Small claims, evictions and limited civil cases from Murrieta ZIP Codes are filed about 7 miles north at the Menifee Justice Center, and an unlimited civil case goes all the way to downtown Riverside.
We serve the papers at the Murrieta address you give us, and we can file at whichever of those buildings the case belongs in. The request itself is handled from our Sacramento office, about 423 miles away in a straight line.
Which courthouse gets a Murrieta filing?
The Superior Court of California, County of Riverside, assigns each case type to a courthouse by ZIP Code, through administrative orders issued under Local Rule 3115. The orders list Murrieta as 92562, 92563 and 92564. All three ZIP Codes land in the same columns, so the courthouse never depends on which side of town the address is on. It depends only on the case type.
Here is how the current orders sort Murrieta filings, grouped by building. Distances run from the city's Census center point, in a straight line.
Menifee Justice Center, 27401 Menifee Center Drive, Menifee (about 7 miles north)
- Limited civil cases
- Unlawful detainers, including evictions where the amount in dispute would make the case unlimited
- Small claims
- Petitions for a name change or a change of gender
- A short list of miscellaneous petitions the civil order sends there whatever the case size, including applications to examine a judgment debtor and petitions about dangerous dogs
- Family law, under the separate family law order effective July 8, 2024
Southwest Justice Center, 30755-D Auld Road, Murrieta (about 4 miles east)
- Restraining order petitions under Code of Civil Procedure sections 527.6, 527.7 and 527.8, which include civil harassment and workplace violence petitions
- Probate, guardianship and conservatorship, plus petitions to approve a minor's compromise, under the probate order effective December 23, 2024
Riverside Historic Courthouse, 4050 Main Street, Riverside (about 30 miles northwest)
- Unlimited civil cases, including non-CEQA writs of mandate
- Complex, class action and CEQA cases from anywhere in the county
- Mental health proceedings under the Welfare and Institutions Code, which the probate order keeps in Riverside for every ZIP Code
That Riverside line is easy to miss. Temecula, 6 miles south, is listed under Menifee for unlimited civil in the same order. Murrieta is not. An office that files in both cities should read the order for each one rather than assume they match.
Attorneys also attach a Certificate of Counsel to an opening pleading naming the branch and the reason, under Local Rule 3117. The court applies the venue statutes, Code of Civil Procedure sections 392 to 401, when it decides the proper courthouse. This is general information, not legal advice.
Inside the Southwest Justice Center
The court's page for the building, in a September 2026 archived copy, describes four levels and 13 courtrooms, numbered S101 through S304. It lists civil harassment, criminal, traffic and juvenile as the matters served there. The probate order adds the Probate Division, even though the location page doesn't list probate. A separate Southwest Juvenile Courthouse is at 30755-G Auld Road.
For filings, the page says the drop box takes documents until 4:00 p.m. on court days, and anything left later is processed the next court day under rule 2.210 of the California Rules of Court. Clerk phone lines close at 2:00 p.m. The court's live pages block automated reading, so check the hours on riverside.courts.ca.gov before a deadline day.
Older Murrieta cases and their case numbers
The court's 2024 reference guide tied several prefixes to the Southwest Justice Center: SWC for civil and eviction cases, SWS for small claims and MCC for civil. Those numbers stay with the case. The building hearing it may not.
The biggest move came with the new building. When the Menifee Justice Center opened on July 8, 2024, the court's news release said it would reassign the civil cases then handled at the Southwest Justice Center, except civil harassment, to Menifee. Parties on those cases were to get a mailed notice listing the new department for future hearings. If that notice is lost, the release points to the court's Public Access Portal for the current courthouse and department.
Local Rule 3115 says a case is usually heard where it was filed, but the court can transfer it to another courthouse for hearing. The September 2026 page for the Southwest Justice Center no longer lists civil or small claims at all. Before we file a proof of service or a motion in an older Murrieta case, we check the register of actions and the latest notice for the current department. If you know the department, put it in the Letter of Instruction.
Papers to serve in Murrieta?
Probate hearings without the trip to Auld Road
Many probate calendars at the Southwest Justice Center can be attended by Zoom. The court's remote appearance page says Local Rule 7010 governs non-evidentiary probate hearings, which it defines as those with no written or oral objections on the hearing date and no deficiencies or questions in the probate notes. You let the other parties know you'll appear remotely, by phone, email or text if you like. The court itself needs no advance notice.
The same page lists probate matters it treats as evidentiary, where remote appearances aren't permitted. They include elder abuse restraining orders, temporary conservatorships, temporary guardianships and reports of sale. When notice of one of those hearings has to be served on a relative or another interested person, send us the papers as soon as the court sets the date, so the person is reached in time. This is general information, not legal advice.
Judgment debtor examinations
A judgment creditor who wants to question a Murrieta debtor under oath applies for an order on form EJ-125. The civil order sends that application to the Menifee Justice Center for Murrieta ZIP Codes, whether the underlying case was limited or unlimited.
Timing drives everything with this form. The Judicial Council's version revised October 1, 2024 says the order has to be personally served at least 30 calendar days before the examination when the person examined is the judgment debtor, and at least 10 calendar days before when it's a third person. The form also lists who may serve it. Read item 3 before you file the application, then send us the signed order so the first attempt happens with time to spare.
What helps when serving a Murrieta resident
Most Murrieta households own their homes. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts about 11,020 renter-occupied homes (±1,123) out of 36,145 occupied homes in the city, about 30%. So a typical attempt is at a single-family house, often in a tract with an HOA, and the person may be at work for most of the day.
These details make the difference between one trip and three:
- The full legal name and any other names used. Include a maiden name or a nickname if it shows up on mail or social media.
- A work address and shift. Someone who leaves before dawn is often easier to reach at work or on a weekend.
- Prior attempts. If the sheriff or another server already tried, tell us when and what happened.
- Whether they expect the papers. Someone who knows a lawsuit is coming may not open the door, and we plan around that.
- A photo or vehicle. Make, color and plate help confirm the right person at the curb.
Each attempt is logged with its date and time for the proof of service. If the person has moved out of Murrieta, skip tracing can look for a current address.
Murrieta businesses and their agents
A corporation or LLC with a Murrieta storefront is usually served through the agent for service of process it lists with the California Secretary of State (Corporations Code §§ 1502 and 17701.13). That agent can be an officer at the Murrieta location, an attorney, or a registered agent company in another city. Search the entity on bizfile Online and copy the agent's name and street address into the request.
When the agent is a commercial registered agent, our pages on CSC Lawyers Incorporating Service and serving corporations explain what happens next. If you aren't sure who is allowed to serve a given document, our guide on who can serve papers in California covers it.
Can you file and serve on one request?
Represented parties must e-file in Riverside County limited and unlimited civil cases, evictions included, under Local Rule 3118. When a Murrieta complaint has to be filed and the summons issued before anyone can be served, we can do both steps for you. See Riverside County court filings and our post on court filing service in California for how that works.
Neighboring cities follow different columns
The cities around Murrieta don't all match it. Wildomar, about 5 miles northwest, and Lake Elsinore, about 12, are listed under the Corona Courthouse for limited civil, evictions and small claims. Menifee, 8 miles north, files at its own justice center, and Hemet, 16 miles northeast, shares Murrieta's Menifee assignment. Every city in the county is on our Riverside County process serving page.
When you're ready, start a Murrieta Service Request and attach the documents. Call 855-582-5776 or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com with questions about a deadline.
