Blythe sits at the far eastern edge of Riverside County, and the court's own page places its courthouse in the county's easternmost part. The city center is about 514 miles from our Sacramento office in a straight line. We still serve papers there: summonses, eviction papers, family law documents and subpoenas for homes, farms, businesses and the state prison west of town.
Both of our service levels carry the same note: remote areas are subject to different timelines. Blythe is one of the places it applies, so this page explains what changes and how to plan for it.
Why service in Blythe takes longer
Distance is most of it. The nearest places on our list are in Imperial County, with Calipatria about 60 miles away in a straight line, and Needles, in San Bernardino County, about 80. The Coachella Valley cities start about 87 miles to the west, at Coachella. There is no nearby town to combine a Blythe trip with.
The court schedule adds to it. The Blythe Courthouse lists counter hours on only three days a week, so a filing or a records pull there has to land on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
What that means for you:
- Send Blythe papers early. If a hearing or a service deadline is close, call 855-582-5776 before you choose Rush so we can tell you whether it's realistic.
- Give us more than a street address. Rural parcels in the Palo Verde Valley can be hard to match to a door. A cross street, a description of the property, a vehicle and the hours someone is home all help.
- List every address you have. A work address, a relative's home or the street address behind a P.O. box each give us another option.
We make no guarantees for service.
How does Riverside County assign Blythe cases?
The Superior Court of California, County of Riverside, assigns courthouses by ZIP Code. Blythe (92225), Ripley (92226) and Vidal (92280) share one set of assignments.
| Case type | Where Blythe-area cases are filed | Order |
|---|---|---|
| Limited civil | Blythe Courthouse, 265 N. Broadway | Civil, effective Aug. 1, 2026 |
| Unlawful detainer (eviction) | Blythe Courthouse | Civil |
| Small claims | Blythe Courthouse | Civil |
| Civil restraining orders and name changes | Blythe Courthouse | Civil |
| Family law | Blythe Courthouse | Family law, effective July 8, 2024 |
| Unlimited civil | Palm Springs Courthouse, 3255 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way | Civil |
| Probate | Palm Springs Courthouse, Probate Division | Probate, effective Dec. 23, 2024 |
| Complex and class actions | Riverside Historic Courthouse, 4050 Main Street | Civil |
The split matters for planning. A limited civil case or an eviction stays in town, but an unlimited case filed from a Blythe ZIP goes to Palm Springs, about 111 miles from the Blythe Courthouse. A complex case goes to Riverside, about 160 miles from the center of Blythe. Distances are straight lines between Census Geocoder points. The Blythe Courthouse
The building at 265 N. Broadway is a one-story courthouse with two departments, 260 and 265. The court's page lists evictions, small claims, civil, family law, criminal and traffic there. Counter hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. A drop box takes documents until 4:00 p.m. on court days, and anything deposited later is processed the next court day.
The clerk's phone line runs 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Source: the court's Blythe Courthouse page, archived copy dated August 11, 2026. The live page blocks automated reading, so confirm the hours on riverside.courts.ca.gov before you rely on them.
Riverside County's local rule 3118 requires parties with lawyers to e-file in all limited and unlimited civil cases, evictions included. That helps with Blythe: an attorney's filing doesn't have to wait for an open counter day. Self-represented filers can still use the counter or the drop box.
Family law is a separate channel. The court's self-help page sends civil, eviction and small claims documents to its eFiling system, but family law and probate documents to a different service it calls eSubmit. For a Blythe divorce or custody filing, that route doesn't depend on the counter's three open days. See Court Filings in Riverside County for how we handle both.
Papers to serve in Blythe?
Hearings in Palm Springs without the 111-mile drive
An unlimited civil or probate case from a Blythe ZIP Code is heard in Palm Springs, but not every hearing needs the trip. The Riverside Superior Court holds remote appearances on Zoom, by computer, tablet or phone.
- Civil motions and case management. Local Rule 3132 covers non-evidentiary civil hearings, those with no oral testimony. Tell the other parties ahead of time that you'll appear remotely; informal notice is fine, and the court needs none in advance.
- Family law at the Blythe Courthouse. Local Rule 5161 works the same way for family law hearings without testimony, including requests for orders and ex parte applications.
- Small claims and evictions. For a non-evidentiary hearing, give the other side notice at least 2 business days before it and file a Notice of Remote Appearance, form RA-010.
Trials and evidentiary hearings have longer notice periods and allow objections, so read the court's Remote Appearances page for your case type. The papers that start the case still have to be served in person or by another method the law allows. This is general information, not legal advice.
Papers for someone at Ironwood State Prison
Ironwood State Prison is at 19005 Wiley's Well Road, about 17 miles west of the center of Blythe in a straight line. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says it opened on February 1, 1994.
The prison population shows up in the Census numbers. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey estimates that about 5,858 Blythe residents (±166) lived in group quarters, the category that includes prisons. So a share of the people with a Blythe address in court records can't be reached at a house.
When the person you need to serve is held at Ironwood, tell us that on the Service Request along with their full name and CDCR number if you know it. We check the institution's requirements before any attempt. Expect it to take longer than a residential address in town.
Older records can point to a prison that's closed. If a court file or an old address list names Chuckawalla Valley State Prison, check it first. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says it was deactivated in November 2024, so anyone listed there was moved. Confirm the person's current institution with CDCR before you send us the papers, or ask about skip tracing.
Farms, businesses and the river
Most of 92225 is open country. In the Census Bureau's 2020 ZIP Code area file, only about 4.6% of the ZIP's land lies inside the City of Blythe, and about 94% lies outside any city or Census-designated place. Mesa Verde and Ripley make up the small remainder. So a 92225 address is often nowhere near the town's streets.
Outside the city grid, many addresses are farm parcels or rural roads in the Palo Verde Valley. For these, a parcel description, the nearest crossroad and the name of the farm or company are as useful as the street number.
A business in Blythe that's a corporation or LLC can be served through its agent for service of process, which California entities name in their Secretary of State filings (Corporations Code § 1502). The agent is often in a larger city, which can turn a remote service into an ordinary one. Search bizfile Online first, then read our page on serving corporations if no agent is listed.
Blythe sits on the Colorado River at the Arizona line. An address across the river is in Arizona, outside the California counties we serve, so check that the address you have is on the California side.
Pulling a Blythe court file
The court's online case search reaches Blythe civil cases filed since May 1994 and Blythe small claims since November 1994. A name search costs $1 if you run it yourself, or $15 a name if the court runs it. The results give case information only. Certified copies have to be requested from the court in person or in writing.
The court's self-help page lists a self-help room at the Blythe Courthouse with court computers, open 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the same Tuesday, Thursday and Friday schedule as the counter. If you need copies from a Blythe file and can't make one of those days, our document retrieval service can request them for you.
When the Blythe address is stale
If an attempt shows the person has moved, we email you the result with what we found. Skip tracing can look for a current address before another long trip. Our post on finding a defendant in California covers what to gather first.
Other desert courthouses and towns
For the Coachella Valley courthouses, see Palm Springs and Indio. Across the county line, Calipatria and Brawley are in Imperial County, and Needles is in San Bernardino County. Every Riverside County city is listed on Riverside County process serving.
