The courthouse matrix for Aliso Viejo

Orange County doesn't route cases by ZIP Code. Under Local Rule 365, the Presiding Judge publishes a Court Designation List, and the current one took effect June 30, 2025. It lists each city once and names the justice center for each kind of case. Aliso Viejo's row works out like this (distances are straight-line from the city's Census center point):

Aliso Viejo caseJustice centerDistance

The list adds that traffic payments and general traffic questions can be handled at any justice center with a criminal and traffic clerk's office.

Newport Beach: close, but not for civil filings

The Harbor Justice Center is the nearest courthouse to Aliso Viejo, and its court page names Aliso Viejo first in its list of cities served, along with Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Mission Viejo and the rest of the south county. But the same page says the building handles traffic, minor offenses and criminal matters, and nothing else. Its weekday hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the main line is (657) 622-5400.

For civil practice, the Harbor building matters mostly through subpoenas. A witness in an Aliso Viejo misdemeanor or traffic trial will usually be ordered there. Send us the subpoena with the department and the date, and say whether the witness has asked for fees.

Civil filing in Santa Ana

Every Aliso Viejo civil case goes north to the Central Justice Center, limited or unlimited. The court's page for that building lists civil and small claims hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and one civil and small claims phone number, (657) 622-6878. Its Self-Help Center is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

Attorneys mostly won't see that counter. The court's e-filing page says documents filed by represented parties in limited, unlimited and complex civil actions and in probate must be filed electronically, and those parties must accept electronic service, unless the court excuses them. Self-represented parties are encouraged to e-file but don't have to. A few originals can't go in electronically at all. For civil cases the page lists bench warrants, subpoenaed documents, Labor Commissioner cash or check deposits, bonds and undertakings. Those still travel on paper, and our Orange County court filing page explains how we handle a physical filing with a service.

92656 and the city line

The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file shows how closely 92656 tracks Aliso Viejo:

  • About 83% of the land in 92656 is inside Aliso Viejo city.
  • About 14% is outside any city.
  • About 2% is inside Laguna Hills and about 1% inside Laguna Niguel.

From the city's side, about 96% of Aliso Viejo's land is in 92656, with about 3% in 92637 and about 1% in 92653, ZIP Codes most people associate with Laguna Woods and Laguna Hills. So a small number of Aliso Viejo addresses carry a neighbor's ZIP Code, and a small number of 92656 addresses are in a neighboring city. Because the designation list is the same for all of these south county cities, the courthouse doesn't change. The city named in a complaint, a lease or a local ordinance claim might, so check it against the property records. Census ZIP Code areas approximate postal ZIP Codes.

Apartments, condos and evictions

Aliso Viejo has more than 8,000 rented homes, and an eviction from any of them is heard at the Central Justice Center under the designation list, along with civil harassment cases.

For an Aliso Viejo eviction, send:

  • The filed summons and complaint, with the Santa Ana case number.
  • The notice that started the case and how it was served.
  • Every adult occupant's name, spelled as on the complaint.
  • The building and unit number, plus the leasing office's hours and any gate or garage entry details.
  • A prejudgment claim of right to possession, if you're using one for occupants you can't name.

The method of service sets the tenant's deadline. The state court self-help page gives 10 court days to answer after personal delivery, and 10 calendar days plus 10 court days after the mailing when the papers were left with someone else or posted. A tenant served through the Safe at Home address program has 15 court days. Posting the summons needs a court order under CCP § 415.45. Every update comes by email.

Papers to serve in Aliso Viejo?

Small claims from Aliso Viejo

Small claims cases from Aliso Viejo are filed and heard at the Central Justice Center, which the designation list says processes all small claims filings. An individual can claim up to $12,500, according to the state court self-help page. The Central Justice Center page lists the Small Claims Advisory Program at (714) 845-7560 or (714) 571-5200.

The self-help page sets the service window. The defendant has to receive the claim at least 15 days before the court date, or 20 days if they're in a different county from the court. When the defendant is a business or a public agency, form SC-104C explains who has to be served, and the person served has to be in California. The plaintiff can't serve the papers, so send us the filed claim and the hearing date and we complete Proof of Service form SC-104.

Serving the City of Aliso Viejo

When the city itself is a party, CCP § 416.50 governs. A public entity is served by delivering the summons and complaint to its clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of its governing body. The city's website gives City Hall's address as 12 Journey, Suite 100. Name the officer you want served in the Letter of Instruction, and we attempt delivery there.

A lawsuit for money against the city usually comes after a written government claim. Under Government Code § 945.4, no suit for money or damages may be brought against a public entity on a claim that must be presented until the claim has been presented and acted on, or deemed rejected. Ask your attorney about the deadlines; this is general information, not legal advice.

Business defendants

An Aliso Viejo company organized as a corporation or LLC names an agent for service of process with the Secretary of State. Look up the exact legal name and agent on bizfile Online before you file, and send us both. A company with offices in Aliso Viejo may list an agent in another county, and that's where the papers go. National companies often use CSC or CT Corporation. Our serving corporations page covers what to do when the listed agent has resigned or moved.

Family law in Orange

Divorce, custody, support, domestic violence and juvenile cases from Aliso Viejo all go to the Lamoreaux Justice Center. Its court page says the building also houses a Self-Help Center, Family Court Services and the Family Law Facilitator. Family law hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, and Family Court Services runs mediations and investigations from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Facilitator's line for child and spousal support help is (657) 622-5077.

For a respondent in Aliso Viejo, send the filed petition or request for order, the hearing date, and anything that helps the server recognize them at home or at work.

Probate in Costa Mesa

Aliso Viejo probate, mental health and elder or dependent adult abuse restraining order cases go to the Costa Mesa Justice Complex. Its probate and mental health line is (657) 622-8452. The e-filing page lists the probate originals that can't be e-filed, including original wills and codicils lodged for filing or safekeeping, an affidavit for real property of small value, subpoenaed documents and undertakings. When a petition needs notice to heirs or beneficiaries at Aliso Viejo addresses, send the full list with each person's address.

Attempts, gates and timing

When an Aliso Viejo address is a condo or apartment in a managed community, and the building has a call box, a leasing office or a garage gate, tell us the unit, the name on the call box, and any instructions you have. If a server can't get in, the attempt is recorded and reported, and a workplace address becomes the next option.

From January 1, 2027, AB 747 changes substituted service. Good-faith attempts at personal delivery on three different days at three different times will show reasonable diligence before papers are left with another adult (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Our AB 747 guide explains the rule, and our proof of service guide shows what the signed proof contains. We make no guarantees for service.
