Petaluma is Sonoma County's second-largest city after Santa Rosa, with 59,776 residents at the 2020 Census. Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, complaints, subpoenas, family law papers, eviction notices and probate papers at Petaluma addresses, from downtown blocks to ranch roads well outside the city.
We work from our Sacramento office, about 66.5 miles from Petaluma in a straight line, and we have no Sonoma County location. Requests come in online, and every update comes by email.
A Petaluma case is filed in Santa Rosa
Petaluma has no courthouse. Sonoma County Superior Court lists four locations, and every one of them is in Santa Rosa. For civil, eviction, small claims, family and probate work, the building that matters is the Civil and Family Law Courthouse at 3055 Cleveland Avenue, about 16.6 miles north of central Petaluma measured straight-line to the coordinates the court publishes.
The civil clerk there takes civil, unlawful detainer and small claims papers, at (707) 521-6610. Family law has its own clerk at (707) 521-6630. The offices are open 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, but the civil and family division pages list phone hours of 8:00 a.m. to noon only. A question that comes up after lunch may have to wait for the next morning.
That's the main reason Petaluma clients send us filings. We can e-file the papers or take them to the Cleveland Avenue counter and send back the conformed copies. Attorneys and other represented parties have to e-file civil, probate and family law documents under Sonoma's Local Rules 17.22 and following, while self-represented parties are exempt. Our Sonoma County court filing page covers the county's details, and Court Filings covers other courts. Source: sonoma.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.
Eviction papers and emergency orders
Unlawful detainer cases from Petaluma rental properties go through the same civil clerk in Santa Rosa. When a landlord or tenant needs an emergency order in a pending eviction, the court's civil page sets a strict morning routine:
- Review days. Unlawful detainer ex parte matters are reviewed Monday through Friday.
- How to submit. An attorney uses eFile. A party without a lawyer brings the papers to the Civil and Family Law Courthouse.
- The cutoff. Papers must be in by 8:30 a.m.
- The return. Orders come back by eFile or are ready for pickup after 2:30 p.m. Anything submitted after 8:30 a.m. waits until after 2:30 p.m. the next court day.
The court says this track is for emergency orders only and won't address routine matters. If an order comes back that has to be served on the other side the same day, put the deadline at the top of your Service Request and call 855-582-5776 so we can plan the attempt around the 2:30 p.m. release.
Small claims from Petaluma
Sonoma County small claims cases are filed through the civil clerk at 3055 Cleveland Avenue. The court's page puts the limit at $12,500, or up to $6,250 when a business is the one suing. Neither side can bring a lawyer to the hearing, except on appeal.
The county also offers a free small claims advisor, provided through the Civil Self-Help Center in the same building. The advisor explains procedure and collection but doesn't prepare documents or serve them. Service has to come from someone who isn't a party to the case. Our guide on who can serve papers in California explains the rule, and the proof of service guide shows what the server signs afterward.
Which probate address is right?
Petaluma estate and trust matters are heard in Santa Rosa too, usually in Courtroom 23 at the Civil and Family Law Courthouse, according to the court's probate page. That page tells self-represented filers to use the Probate Window opposite Courtroom 18 in the same building.
The court's own pages don't line up on the address, though. The courthouse location page lists the Probate Clerk's Office at 3055 Cleveland Avenue. The probate page's contact block names the Civil and Family Law Courthouse but prints 625 Administration Drive, and it gives the Hall of Justice at 625 Administration Drive as the mailing address. The probate clerk's number is (707) 521-6650.
Our practice: attorney filings go by e-file, which settles the question. For a paper filing, we confirm with the clerk before a runner makes the 17-mile drive. Checked on sonoma.courts.ca.gov, October 2026.

Where Petaluma's ZIP Codes really go
Petaluma has two Census ZIP Code areas, 94952 and 94954, and both are far bigger than the city.
| ZIP Code area | Land inside Petaluma city | Land outside any city or Census community | Other places it touches |
|---|---|---|---|
| 94952 | about 3% | about 91% | Bloomfield, Valley Ford and Petaluma Center (Sonoma County); a sliver of Novato (Marin County) |
| 94954 | about 14% | about 86% | Penngrove (Sonoma County) |

In plain terms, a "Petaluma" address is often a house in unincorporated Sonoma County, sometimes miles from town. Bloomfield had 338 residents in 2020, Valley Ford 148 and Petaluma Center 709. All three are unincorporated Census communities with Petaluma-area ZIP Codes.
Getting to a rural Petaluma address
Out on the county roads, the hard part is finding the house and getting to the door. What helps:
- A map pin. Road numbers can be far apart, and a mailbox at the road may belong to a house well back from it.
- Gate details. A code, a call box, or the hours a gate stands open.
- Who lives where. Larger parcels can have a main house and a second residence. Say which one the person uses.
- Animals. Note any dogs or livestock near the drive.
- A second address. A job in town or in Santa Rosa gives a weekday alternative to a long drive.
Our turnaround wording covers this situation: remote areas are subject to different timelines. Tell us the hearing date up front, and we'll say whether the timing works before you choose Rush or Standard.
The U.S. Coast Guard also runs Training Center Petaluma, a federal installation. Getting onto any military facility depends on its access rules, so give us a home or off-base address for anyone who works or trains there.
The Marin County line
Petaluma sits near Sonoma County's southern edge. Novato, about 11.7 miles south, is in Marin County. A dispute can involve parties on both sides of that line. Service follows the person: we serve a Novato defendant at a Novato address in a Sonoma County case, and a Petaluma defendant in a Marin County case. The filing goes to whichever court the case belongs in. See our Marin County page for that court.
Serving a Petaluma business
Look up the corporation or LLC on the California Secretary of State's bizfile Online and send us the agent for service of process. A small Petaluma business often names its owner. A larger one may name a commercial registered agent such as CSC or CT Corporation, so the papers are served at that agent's office instead. The guide to serving corporations covers the other routes.
Before you send the papers
Upload up to 5 PDFs to a Service Request, name the party exactly, list every address and add your Letter of Instruction. AB 747 changes substituted service and proofs from January 1, 2027. Our AB 747 guide explains how. We make no guarantees for service.
If the person has left the address, ask about skip tracing, and see our post on finding a defendant in California. For copies from a court file, use document retrieval.
