Vineburg is a named place on the federal map but not on the Census count. It's a short way southeast of the city of Sonoma, about 56 miles from our Sacramento office in a straight line, and its addresses use the same ZIP Code as Sonoma, Boyes Hot Springs, El Verano and a large stretch of Sonoma Valley countryside. Its cases belong to the Sonoma County Superior Court in Santa Rosa.

Most Vineburg jobs come down to three things: getting the address right inside a very large ZIP Code area, filing in the right county when another county's courthouse is closer, and meeting Sonoma's local deadlines for probate notices and family court papers.

A place name without a Census boundary

The U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System records Vineburg as a populated place. When we ran its official point through the Census Bureau's geocoder, it came back in Sonoma County, the Sonoma County subdivision and the Sonoma Valley Unified School District, but inside no incorporated city and no Census-designated place. There's no population count for Vineburg on its own, no boundary and no local government beyond the county.

For a Service Request, that means the papers may say Vineburg, Sonoma or neither. Use the street address the person actually lives or works at, and tell us if the papers and the mailbox disagree.

95476: one ZIP Code, many communities

The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file measures ZIP Code area 95476 at about 107.8 square miles of land. Very little of it is in any named community:

Part of 95476Land areaShare of the ZIP Code area
Outside any city or Census place, including Vineburgabout 99.4 sq miabout 92.1%
City of Sonomaabout 2.7 sq miabout 2.5%
Temelec CDPabout 1.6 sq miabout 1.5%
Fetters Hot Springs-Agua Caliente CDPabout 1.5 sq miabout 1.4%
El Verano CDPabout 1.1 sq miabout 1.1%
Boyes Hot Springs CDPabout 1.1 sq miabout 1.0%
Eldridge CDPabout 0.5 sq miabout 0.4%

A "Sonoma, CA 95476" address can therefore be in the city, in one of five small Census communities, or on a country road miles from any of them. Remote areas are subject to different timelines. A cross street, the name on the gate, a parcel number or a map pin cuts down on wasted attempts.

Closer to Napa's courthouse than Santa Rosa's

Measured in a straight line from Vineburg's official point, the Napa County Superior Court's Historic Courthouse at 825 Brown Street, Napa, is about 8.5 miles away. The Sonoma County court's Civil and Family Law Courthouse at 3055 Cleveland Avenue, Santa Rosa, is about 20.7 miles away, measured to its Census-geocoded address. Napa itself is about 7.7 miles from Vineburg.

Proximity doesn't decide where a case goes. A Sonoma County lawsuit, eviction or divorce is filed in Santa Rosa. A case already filed in Napa, Marin or anywhere else in California can be served at a Vineburg address, because a California summons can be served throughout the state. If the parties are on both sides of the county line, confirm which court issued the papers before anything goes out.

The Santa Rosa building houses the Civil Clerk's Office for civil cases, evictions and small claims, the Family Law Clerk's Office and the Probate Clerk's window. The court lists clerk's office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our Sonoma County court filing page explains how a filing there and a service in Vineburg can go on one request.

Probate cases with Sonoma Valley property

When someone dies owning property in or around Vineburg, the estate is administered through the Sonoma court's Probate Division. Its page gives several working details:

  • Probate notes. The Probate Attorney publishes notes 45 days before the hearing on a petition, so notice issues can be fixed before the court rules. Notes are generally available three weeks before the hearing on the court's online case portal.
  • Tentative rulings. Probate tentatives are generally available by calling (707) 521-6607 after 2:00 p.m. the day before the hearing; guardianship tentatives after 11:00 a.m.
  • Courtroom and window. Trust, estate and most conservatorship hearings are usually in Courtroom 23 at the Cleveland Avenue courthouse. Self-represented filers use the Probate Window opposite Courtroom 18.
  • Drop-off ex partes. Non-emergency ex parte applications in estate, trust and most conservatorship matters can be e-filed by attorneys, or dropped off at the clerk's office by a party without one. They must be submitted before 10:00 a.m., and the caption must say "Drop-Off Ex Parte."
  • Guardianship investigations. In a guardianship, a court investigator reviews the proposed guardian, and for a non-relative the county's Department of Social Services prepares the report.

Heirs, beneficiaries and relatives entitled to notice can live anywhere. List each one with a full address and the hearing date, and say which ones were reached by mail already.

Papers to serve in Vineburg?

What can't be e-filed in Sonoma

Attorneys and represented parties must e-file civil, probate and family cases in Sonoma. Local Rule 17.23 carves out items that may not be filed electronically:

  • Civil: subpoenaed documents, Labor Commissioner deposits of cash or check, and payments for bonds and undertakings.
  • Probate: the affidavit for real property of small value, bonds, financial documents from a private professional conservator, subpoenaed documents, undertakings, and original wills and codicils.
  • Family law: the declaration for default for an uncontested judgment, judgments, and the notice of entry of judgment.

Those go to the clerk on paper. Subpoenaed records come from a records custodian rather than a party, so plan for paper delivery to Santa Rosa when the subpoena is issued.

Custody cases and Family Court Services deadlines

A Vineburg custody or parenting-time dispute can be sent to Family Court Services for mediation or a recommending counselor before the judge decides. Local Rule 9.14 sets the service schedule for those appointments:

  1. Moving papers must be filed and served on the other side at least 7 court days before the appointment, or 7 court days plus 5 calendar days if served by mail.
  2. Responding papers must be filed and served at least 2 court days before, with the same 5-day addition for mail.
  3. A proof of service is required.
  4. Email service on a lawyer is allowed, but email service on a self-represented party isn't, unless that party has consented on Judicial Council form EFS-005-CV.

When the other parent has no lawyer and hasn't consented to email, the papers go by mail or by hand. Personal delivery avoids the extra five days that mail adds.

Subpoenas for Sonoma Valley witnesses

A subpoena to testify is served by delivering a copy to the witness personally, and offering the travel and one-day attendance fees if the witness asks for them (CCP § 1987(a)). The statute also requires service early enough to give the witness a reasonable time to prepare and travel. For a minor, the subpoena goes to a parent, guardian or similar caretaker, and also to the minor if the minor is 12 or older. Records subpoenas follow their own rules, and the records that come back can't be e-filed in Sonoma, as noted above. Our post on how to serve a subpoena in California walks through each kind. General information, not legal advice.

Restraining order hearings

Sonoma's Local Rule 1.9 says instructions for remote appearances at domestic violence and gun violence restraining order hearings are posted on the court's domestic violence self-help page, along with phone numbers for each department's judicial assistant. Civil harassment, elder abuse and workplace violence hearings are presumed to be in person. Either way, the restrained person has to be handed the temporary order and the notice of hearing before the hearing date. A photo, the person's vehicle and their usual hours make a first attempt more likely to count.

Collecting a Sonoma judgment from a Vineburg debtor

The Sheriff's Civil Bureau handles levies countywide. For a bank levy, its page says the creditor doesn't need the account number but must give the name and address of the bank. The levy reaches only the money or safe deposit box contents held at the specific branch served, at the moment of service. Accounts that also carry a spouse's name, another person's name or a fictitious business name need additional documents, and the page points to CCP § 700.160 for them.

The bureau also notes that, as of January 1, 2026, the judgment debtor address declaration must be on the Judicial Council's mandatory form WG-015/EJ-135. Before any levy, a court order for examination of the judgment debtor can help find the bank and the employer; it must be personally served at least 10 days before the exam under CCP § 708.110(d). If the debtor has moved away from 95476, skip tracing can look for a current address.

Evictions and small claims

A Vineburg eviction is filed with the Civil Clerk's Office in Santa Rosa, and the tenant has 10 court days to answer after personal service. Sonoma's local rules add their own deadlines, as our Guerneville page describes. A small claims claim against a Sonoma County resident must be served at least 15 days before the hearing, or 20 days for someone living in another county (CCP § 116.340). The person suing can't serve it; see who can serve papers in California.

Service attempts from 2027

From January 1, 2027, three good-faith attempts at personal delivery, on three different days and at three different times, show reasonable diligence before papers are left with another adult at a home or business (CCP § 415.20(b)(2), as amended by AB 747). The county clerk's register of process servers becomes public under Business and Professions Code § 22355. See our AB 747 guide and our proof of service guide. We make no guarantees for service.

Vineburg process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Is Vineburg part of the city of Sonoma?

No. The U.S. Geological Survey lists Vineburg as a populated place, and the Census Bureau's geocoder puts its official point outside any city or Census-designated place, about 1.7 miles from the center of Sonoma. It's unincorporated Sonoma County, and it shares the 95476 ZIP Code with the city.

Napa's courthouse is closer. Can a Vineburg case be filed there?

A Sonoma County case is filed with the Sonoma County Superior Court in Santa Rosa, about 20.7 miles from Vineburg, even though Napa's Historic Courthouse is only about 8.5 miles away. Which county a case belongs in is a venue question for the attorney or the party. A Napa case can still be served at a Vineburg address.

Can an original will be e-filed in Sonoma County?

No. Sonoma's Local Rule 17.23 lists original wills and codicils, whether for filing or safekeeping, among probate items that may not be e-filed. The same rule keeps bonds, undertakings, subpoenaed documents and the affidavit for real property of small value off e-filing too.

When do Sonoma probate notes come out?

The court's probate page says the Probate Attorney publishes notes for petitions 45 days before the hearing, so notice problems can be fixed in time, and that notes are generally available three weeks before the hearing through the online case portal. A missed notice usually means another round of service.

How early must custody mediation papers be served in Sonoma?

Under Local Rule 9.14, moving papers for a Family Court Services appointment must be filed and served at least 7 court days before it, or 7 court days plus 5 calendar days if mailed. Responding papers are due 2 court days before. Email service on a self-represented party needs their written consent on form EFS-005-CV.

Does the Sonoma sheriff need a bank account number for a levy?

No. The Civil Bureau's page says a specific account number isn't required, but the creditor must give the name and address of the bank to be served. The levy reaches only what's held at that branch when it's served. Joint accounts or accounts in a business name need extra documents under CCP § 700.160.

Who receives a subpoena for a 14-year-old witness?

Under Code of Civil Procedure § 1987(a), a subpoena for a minor is served on the minor's parent, guardian, conservator or similar fiduciary, and also on the minor if the minor is 12 or older. If none of those adults can be found with reasonable diligence, the statute allows service on the person caring for the minor or with whom the minor lives.

Where is a Vineburg eviction filed?

At the Civil and Family Law Courthouse in Santa Rosa, where the Civil Clerk's Office takes unlawful detainer cases. After personal service, the tenant has 10 court days to file an answer. General information, not legal advice.
