Ione sits in the western foothills of Amador County, and every Amador case is heard in one courthouse up the road in Jackson. Valpro Attorney Services takes Ione process serving and Amador County court filing from our Sacramento office, about 34 miles away. That covers summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document, served on people, businesses and public agencies.
Send the documents on a Service Request or to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. If a hearing date is close, call 855-582-5776 during office hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Where do Ione cases go in Amador County?
To the Amador Courthouse at 500 Argonaut Lane, Jackson, CA 95642. It is about 8.5 miles straight-line from Ione's Census center point. The court's location page labels it "All Cases Served" and lists civil, small claims, unlawful detainer, family law, probate, guardianship, conservatorship, restraining orders, name changes, traffic and criminal.
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Building | 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday |
| Clerk's office and phones | 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday–Friday |
| Closed | Court holidays |
The court's small claims and civil pages show a shorter window, with public access from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and phones from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Because the two pages disagree, plan any counter filing for the morning. A filing that has to go in today should reach us early.
E-filing in Amador started in September 2026
Amador's e-filing program went live on Monday, September 14, 2026, for three case types: limited civil, unlimited civil and small claims. New cases and later filings in those types can go in through an approved electronic filing service provider. Every other case type, including family law and probate, will be added in a later phase, and the court says it will announce each expansion on its e-filing page.
The court's notice is direct on two points. E-filing is "encouraged but is not mandatory at this time," and paper filings are still accepted at the public counter, in the drop box and by mail.
Fax filing is on its way out:
- Until January 31, 2027: the automated fax filing system still accepts family law, civil and probate documents. Faxes received by 5:00 p.m. are filed with that day's date.
- Fees: $5 per document of 1–25 pages and $10 per document of 26–50 pages. Each document goes separately, and anything over 50 pages is rejected.
- From February 1, 2027: e-filing replaces fax filing.
Two smaller fax details catch people out. A document that arrives after 5:00 p.m. is treated as received the next business day, and if you want filed copies back you have to ask for them on the fax cover sheet. Paying a filing fee by card adds a processing charge of 3.5%, which is waived under an approved fee waiver.
The court's e-filing page says the program is open to attorneys, attorney service companies and self-represented parties, at any hour. It also says the court doesn't endorse any provider and isn't responsible for provider fees or technical trouble, so keep the provider's confirmation with your file.
If your office has been faxing Amador filings, plan the switch now. We can take the filing side of an Amador case as well as service. See Amador County court filing for how that works, and our post on California court e-filing for the general rules.
Mule Creek State Prison and CDCR papers
Mule Creek State Prison is in Ione. CDCR lists its physical address as 4001 Highway 104, Ione, CA 95640, with a mailing address of P.O. Box 409099 and a main line of (209) 274-4911. Papers that involve the prison fall into a few groups, and CDCR's own pages set different routes for each.
Prison staff, on a work-related matter. CDCR's Office of Legal Affairs says to contact the Litigation Coordinator at that facility and be prepared to serve the person on site. CDCR's Ombudsman lists the Mule Creek Litigation Coordinator at (209) 274-5247, fax (209) 274-5018.
Prison staff, on a personal matter. CDCR does not accept service of process for non-work-related matters involving its employees. For those, CDCR points people to local law enforcement. In practice, a divorce or a debt case against someone who works at Mule Creek is planned for a home or other address, not the prison.
CDCR itself. The Office of Legal Affairs accepts service only for the department and certain executive staff at headquarters. Its address is 10111 Old Placerville Road, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95827, and it asks callers to phone (279) 223-2100 for instructions. It does not accept service for the Receiver, California Correctional Health Care Services or the Board of Parole Hearings.
A person incarcerated at Mule Creek. CDCR's Ombudsman says all legal matters should go to each institution's Litigation Coordinator, who "processes legal documents, serves legal documents and works with outside entities on legal and litigation matters related to the institution." We don't publish rules for this situation beyond what CDCR states. Before you send a Service Request for an incarcerated party, call the Litigation Coordinator, note what they tell you, and put it in your Letter of Instruction.
Facility pages change. Confirm the coordinator's number on CDCR's site before relying on it.
Papers to serve in Ione?
The 95640 ZIP Code reaches far past the city limits
Census Bureau data shows how much of 95640 is outside Ione. The ZIP Code area covers about 117.3 square miles of land, and the part inside the city of Ione is about 4.6 square miles. The rest takes in all or part of three unincorporated communities, Buena Vista, Camanche North Shore and Camanche Village, plus a sliver of Sutter Creek.
For service, that means an "Ione, CA 95640" address on your papers can be a house in town or a property miles out on a county road. Help the first attempt land:
- Give the full street address, with any unit, space or lot number. Note whether it's in town or out near Camanche if you know.
- Describe the property. A gate, a long driveway, a ranch entrance, a mobile home park, a barn or shop where the person works.
- Say who lives there. A spouse, adult children, a caretaker, roommates.
- List the hours. When the person leaves and gets home, and any shift work.
- Add a second address. A workplace in Jackson, Sutter Creek or Sacramento gives the server another option.
Small claims papers for an Ione defendant
The Amador small claims page sets out the service options plainly. The defendant can be served personally, by substituted service, or by certified mail sent by the clerk. Only the clerk may use certified mail, and that service isn't complete until the defendant signs the receipt. The court suggests checking with the clerk at least two weeks before trial to see whether the certified mail came back signed.
When the clerk doesn't mail it, or the mail is returned unclaimed, the plaintiff needs a server. The court's page names the Sheriff's Civil Bureau, a private process server or any adult who isn't a party. The plaintiff can't serve the claim personally. Whoever serves signs form SC-104, and the plaintiff files it before the trial date.
Timing is set by where the defendant lives:
| Defendant lives | Serve at least |
|---|---|
| In Amador County, such as Ione | 15 calendar days before the hearing |
| Outside Amador County | 20 calendar days before the hearing |
Substituted service is complete on the 10th day after mailing, so count from that day, not the day the papers were left. The court's small claims and civil pages still show a $10,000 limit for individuals. Ask the Small Claims Advisor about current limits before you file. The court lists the advisor's line as 209-257-2603. In person, small claims and eviction help runs Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. (closed noon to 1:00), in Conference Room C. For who may serve and how, see who can serve papers in California.
Ione evictions and the answer period
Landlords with Ione rentals file unlawful detainer cases at the Jackson courthouse. One caution: the Amador civil page still says a tenant has five days to answer. The California Courts self-help page now gives 10 court days after personal service, not counting weekends or court holidays. After substituted service or posting, the tenant has 10 calendar days plus 10 court days after the server mailed the papers. Count from the self-help rule, not the older local page.
If personal delivery fails, an eviction summons can be posted only with a court order under CCP § 415.45. Starting January 1, 2027, AB 747 changes how diligence before substituted service is shown. Our AB 747 guide covers it. This is general information, not legal advice.
Sheriff or private server in Amador County
The Amador County Sheriff's Civil Bureau serves civil process too. Its page says process must be valid on its face and come with signed instructions naming what is served, on whom and where. It uses Judicial Council form SER-001 as the Letter of Instruction. Its fees follow Government Code § 26720 and following, and the main office number is (209) 223-6500.
The Sheriff's page lists the work it handles after judgment as well as before: subpoenas, restraining orders, writs of execution, writs of sale and attachment, earnings withholding orders, bank levies, evictions and civil bench warrants. If you are enforcing a judgment against an Ione debtor, start with that page and the Sheriff's civil fee schedule posted there.
A private server works from your Letter of Instruction instead. Once service is done, you get a signed proof of service to file. Our proof of service guide shows which form fits which case.
Proposed Amador local rules for 2027
The court has posted proposed Local Rules of Court and local forms that would take effect January 1, 2027. Comments are accepted through November 16, 2026, by email to webmaster@amadorcourt.org or by mail to the court at 500 Argonaut Lane. If you file in Amador regularly, read the proposal on the court's local rules page.
Family law litigants without a lawyer can see the court's Family Law Facilitator in the courthouse by appointment and limited drop-in. The office helps with forms for divorce and legal separation, custody and visitation, child and spousal support, parentage and domestic violence restraining orders. It doesn't represent either side and may assist both. The statewide Self-Help Call Center, (213) 633-6000, takes family law questions weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
