How do I have papers served in Santa Cruz?
Send a Service Request with up to 5 PDFs, the name of the person or business and every Santa Cruz address you have. Choose Rush or Standard, then explain in the Letter of Instruction when and where the person is usually found. We assign the request, make the attempts and send you the proof of service.
- Pick the service and upload. Choose Process Service and attach the papers as PDFs. If the case isn't filed yet, add Court Filing too.
- Identify the party. A full legal name, any nickname, a date of birth if you have it, or the exact business name.
- Give addresses with detail. Include apartment or cottage numbers. Some Santa Cruz lots have a second unit at the back.
- Write the Letter of Instruction. Hours at home, a workplace, a vehicle, a photo and anything a neighbor or landlord told you.
- Get every update by email. To ask where the job stands, reply to your confirmation email.
Which courthouse handles a Santa Cruz case?
It depends on the case type, because the county splits its work between 2 courthouses. The Santa Cruz Courthouse at 701 Ocean Street takes general civil, unlawful detainer, name change and probate filings. Small claims, family law and every restraining order go to the Watsonville Courthouse at 1 Second Street, about 15 miles away.
| Case type | Where it is filed | Address |
|---|---|---|
| General civil, limited and unlimited | Santa Cruz Courthouse, Civil Division, Room 110 | 701 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz |
| Unlawful detainer (eviction) | Santa Cruz Courthouse, Civil Division, Room 110 | 701 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz |
| Probate | Santa Cruz Courthouse, Room 110 | 701 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz |
| Small claims | Watsonville Courthouse, Room 300 (filed and heard there only) | 1 Second Street, Watsonville |
| Family law | Watsonville Courthouse | 1 Second Street, Watsonville |
| Restraining orders, all types | Watsonville Courthouse, Room 300 | 1 Second Street, Watsonville |
The split catches people out with restraining orders. The court says an initial restraining order request brought to Room 110 in Santa Cruz will be scanned to Watsonville, but no later papers in that case can be filed in Santa Cruz. All of those hearings take place in Watsonville. Court facts checked October 2026 at santacruz.courts.ca.gov.
For a Santa Cruz party in a small claims or family case, read our Watsonville process server page, which covers that courthouse in detail.
What are the filing hours at 701 Ocean Street?
The Civil Division's Clerk's Office is open 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. After 3:00 p.m., a mail slot takes filings, and items must be received by 5:00 p.m. Phones are answered from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The court suggests coming in the morning to avoid lines.
Electronic filings can be submitted 24 hours a day under CCP § 1010.6. For attorneys that is the normal route, because the court's e-filing FAQ says e-filing is mandatory for attorneys and optional for self-represented litigants. Once a filing is accepted, the court sends an email with a link to a file-stamped copy, and that copy is what goes out for service.
Our Santa Cruz County court filing page covers filings at both courthouses. For a general view of e-filing in California, see our post on court e-filing.
Papers to serve in Santa Cruz?
What makes Santa Cruz addresses different to serve?
Santa Cruz covers 4 Census ZIP Code areas: 95060, 95062, 95064 and 95065. The city sits between the Monterey Bay shoreline and the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains, with the UC Santa Cruz campus on the hill above town. Housing ranges from beach cottages and back-lot units to student rentals and hillside homes.
- Second units and cottages. Some lots have more than one dwelling. Give the unit letter or describe the back house, or the server may knock at the wrong door.
- Student rentals. Houses near the university can have several tenants on one lease. A full name, a photo and the move-in date help confirm the right person.
- Campus housing. Residence halls can limit who enters the building. A class or work schedule off campus can be a better second address.
- Vacation and seasonal rentals. Near the beach, the person at the door may be a short-term guest. Tell us how you know the party lives there.
- Live Oak and other unincorporated areas. Live Oak, between the city and Capitola, uses Santa Cruz mailing addresses but lies outside the city limits. The street address still works for service.
Addresses up in the mountains are a different job. Homes off Highway 17 or in the San Lorenzo Valley can be miles apart on narrow roads, and our turnaround wording applies there: remote areas are subject to different timelines. Communities such as Scotts Valley and, across the county line, Redwood Estates are served the same way.
How do I serve a Santa Cruz business?
Look up the business on bizfile Online before you send the papers. California corporations and LLCs must name an agent for service of process with the Secretary of State (Corporations Code §§ 1502(b) and 17701.13). Send us the agent's name and address from that record, and we serve the agent or another person the law permits.
Smaller Santa Cruz businesses often list the owner as the agent, at a home or shop address. A sole proprietor is served as an individual, so the owner's name and a description matter. For an out-of-county company with a Santa Cruz storefront, the agent may be a registered agent firm somewhere else in California. Our guide to serving corporations explains each case.
How does service in Santa Cruz change in 2027?
From January 1, 2027, AB 747 raises the bar for substituted service. Before papers are left with someone else, reasonable diligence will be shown by attempts on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Proofs of service will also need photos with date, time and GPS stamps (CCP § 417.10(a)(1)).
For a mountain address or a hard-to-reach student rental, that means planning the attempts across a week. A workplace or class schedule in the Letter of Instruction helps the attempts land at different times of day. Read our AB 747 guide for the full list of changes. This is general information, not legal advice.
What if the Santa Cruz party has moved?
An address taken from an old lease or a past school year may be stale. If the server confirms the person is gone, ask for skip tracing. We research a current address, you approve it, and the papers go back out to the new address. We make no guarantees for service.
Our post on skip tracing for legal cases explains the process. If you need an earlier filing from a Santa Cruz case file, our document retrieval service can pull it.
