San Luis Obispo is the seat of San Luis Obispo County and home to the county's main courthouse. Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, complaints, subpoenas, family law papers and unlawful detainer documents at San Luis Obispo homes, offices, apartment buildings and campus addresses. We also file with the Superior Court, at the counter or by e-filing.

We don't have an office on the Central Coast. Every San Luis Obispo job is managed from our office at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833, about 236 miles north in a straight line. Upload the papers through a Service Request, or email them to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. For a question before you send anything, call 855-582-5776, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

1050 Monterey Street handles the city's civil and family work

The Superior Court of California, County of San Luis Obispo, lists its Civil & Family Law Branch at 1050 Monterey Street, Room 220, San Luis Obispo, CA 93408. For a case that arises in the city, nearly every filing a paralegal deals with goes through that one clerk's office:

Case typeWhere the court says it goes
Civil, limited and unlimitedRoom 220, 1050 Monterey Street, or e-filing
Unlawful detainer (eviction)Civil Division, same office
Small claimsRoom 220 (phone option 4)
Family lawCivil & Family Law Branch
Probate, guardianship, conservatorship"All probate matters are filed and heard" here

The local rules describe the same site differently: Rule 2.03 names it the Courthouse Annex, 1035 Palm Street. Room 220 at 1050 Monterey Street is the address on every division page we checked.

The Veteran's Memorial Branch at 801 Grand Avenue is marked "Temporarily Closed", so don't plan a small claims or family filing there.

Which cases belong in San Luis Obispo and which go north

The county splits venue at the Cuesta Grade, the stretch of Highway 101 that climbs north out of the city. Local Rule 9.27(b) assigns civil cases from these places to the San Luis Obispo Courthouse:

  • San Luis Obispo, Avila Beach, Cayucos and Los Osos
  • Morro Bay, Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach
  • Nipomo, Oceano and unincorporated areas south of the Cuesta Grade

Paso Robles, Atascadero, Cambria, Santa Margarita and Templeton go to the Paso Robles Branch instead. Small claims venue under Rule 9.28 uses the same split, based on where the defendant lives or does business.

A morning-only counter, four days a week

This is the detail most likely to cost you a day. The civil walk-up window at 1050 Monterey Street is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There are no afternoon counter hours and no Friday counter in San Luis Obispo. The phone line runs Monday through Friday, also 8:30 a.m. to noon. A notice on the court's home page says counter and phone hours changed because of budget cuts.

For a filing done by hand:

  • Papers reach us on a Thursday afternoon. The next San Luis Obispo window opens Monday morning.
  • The deadline is a Friday. The only Friday counter in the county is at the Paso Robles Branch, 901 Park Street, also from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
  • Anything that can be e-filed can be sent at any hour.

Our San Luis Obispo County court filing page covers how we take filings for this court.

E-filing has been required here since 2017

The court's Online Case Filing page says e-filing became mandatory on January 1, 2017 for these civil case types: unlimited, limited, small claims, probate and guardianships, family law, family support, adoption and mental health. Local Rule 31.06 says the same for civil, probate and family cases. Self-represented parties are exempt under California Rules of Court 2.253(b)(2), though the court encourages them to e-file. Civil fax filings are no longer accepted.

The court takes e-filings through Odyssey eFileCA. Local Rule 31.05 keeps some documents out of e-filing entirely, including:

  • wills, codicils and testamentary trusts
  • bonds and undertakings
  • subpoenaed documents
  • exhibits too large to send accurately

Those go to the counter during the morning window. For how e-filing works at other California courts, read our post on court e-filing service.

Papers to serve in San Luis Obispo?

What has to go out with a San Luis Obispo summons

San Luis Obispo adds its own items to the service packet in civil cases. Local Rule 9.12(a) says the plaintiff must serve the summons and complaint on every defendant within 60 days, along with these four papers:

  1. Civil Case Management Policy
  2. Notice of Assignment and Case Management Conference
  3. A blank Case Management Statement
  4. The court's ADR Policy Statement

Rule 9.12(b) then requires a proof of service filed within 10 days after the complaint is served, unless the defendant has already filed a responsive pleading. Upload all of it with the summons and complaint, so a missing local form is caught before the first attempt. Our proof of service guide explains what the server's proof has to show.

Small claims at the San Luis Obispo branch

The court's small claims page sets the limits at $12,500 for an individual and $6,250 for a business. Claims are handled at 1050 Monterey Street, Room 220, with phone help on option 4 of (805) 706-3600.

Local Rule 9.28(b) has a rule worth knowing before you choose a server. The cost of personal service is left to the judicial officer's discretion if the plaintiff hasn't first tried certified mail without success. Continuances need a written request at least 10 calendar days before trial.

The court lists a free Small Claims Advisor, with San Luis Obispo hours Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. When you're ready to serve, send us the file-stamped claim and the hearing date. Our guide to who can serve papers in California covers why the plaintiff can't do it personally.

Serving at Cal Poly and other campus-style addresses

Cal Poly, the California State University campus in San Luis Obispo, uses the address 1 Grand Avenue and ZIP 93407. That ZIP isn't one of the city's two Census ZIP Code areas, 93401 and 93405. Papers for a student or employee there need more than a street line. Tell us:

  • the building or residence hall and the room number
  • class times or a work shift, if you know them
  • a photo or a description of the person
  • any off-campus address, often an easier place to make contact

A records subpoena aimed at the university is a different job from serving a person on campus. Our post on how to serve a subpoena in California covers that difference.

The California Men's Colony, a CDCR state prison, is on Colony Drive, ZIP 93409. If the person is held there, flag it so we can discuss timing first.

The ZIP codes, the people and the papers

San Luis Obispo had 47,063 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate is 50,636. Its two Census ZIP Code areas are 93401 and 93405. Give us the full street address, any unit number and the community name used on the papers.

Near campus and downtown, a unit number, gate code and the hours someone is home save attempts. If the last known address has gone stale, our skip tracing service looks for a current one. Read how to find a defendant in California for what to collect first.

For a company, serve its agent for service of process. Look the entity up on bizfile Online and send us the agent it lists. Many businesses use a commercial agent, such as CSC Lawyers Incorporating Service, and we serve wherever that agent is. Our guide to serving a corporation covers the other options.

Cities around San Luis Obispo

Straight-line distances from central San Luis Obispo:

Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande and Morro Bay share the San Luis Obispo venue. Atascadero cases file in Paso Robles. Every other city in the county is on our San Luis Obispo County process server page. Ranch and backcountry addresses take longer to reach, and remote areas are subject to different timelines.
