Atascadero sits on Highway 101 roughly midway between the county's two main courthouses. Paso Robles is about 10 miles north and San Luis Obispo about 15 miles south, measured straight-line between city centers. Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, petitions, subpoenas, small claims and eviction papers at Atascadero homes and workplaces, and we file the case papers that go with them.
Everything runs through our one office, at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833, roughly 221 miles from Atascadero as the crow flies. There's no Valpro Attorney Services office on the Central Coast. To start, upload the papers through a Service Request or email them to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. Call 855-582-5776 with questions, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Atascadero cases belong to the Paso Robles Branch
The Superior Court of California, County of San Luis Obispo, splits the county at the Cuesta Grade, the climb on Highway 101 south of Santa Margarita. Atascadero is on the north side of that line. So the local rules assign its cases to the Paso Robles Branch, 901 Park Street, Paso Robles:
- Civil cases, limited and unlimited, under Rule 9.27(c).
- Small claims, under Rule 9.28, when the defendant lives or does business in Atascadero.
- Family law, under Rule 19.04, based on where the petitioner lives when the case is filed.
Templeton and Santa Margarita, on either side of the city, fall in the same Paso Robles venue. Probate is the exception, because the court hears all probate matters at the Civil & Family Law Branch in San Luis Obispo.
Filing location and venue aren't the same thing
Here's the useful part for Atascadero filers. Local Rule 9.27 says a civil case may be filed at any court location other than the Juvenile Services Center and the Veteran's Hall. Once filed, the case is assigned to a judge by venue. An Atascadero complaint can go in at the San Luis Obispo clerk's office and still be assigned to the Paso Robles Branch.
That matters because the two counters keep different days. San Luis Obispo's window at 1050 Monterey Street, Room 220, is open Monday through Thursday. The Paso Robles window is open Wednesday and Friday. Both close at noon, and Wednesday is the only day both are open. A Monday or Tuesday counter filing for an Atascadero case goes south; a Friday one goes north.
Family law works a little differently. Rule 19.04 allows filing at the San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles branch, with Local Form FL013, Statement of Venue, attached to the first filing so the case lands with the right judicial officer.
E-filing timing and fee waivers
Most represented parties won't use a counter at all. The court requires e-filing for represented parties in civil, probate and family cases, and it exempts self-represented parties. Local Rule 31.03 sets the timing:
- Documents can be sent to the court at any time of day.
- A submission received by 11:59:59 p.m. on a court day is deemed filed that day.
- Anything later is treated as received on the next business day the clerk's office is open.
- Court days are Monday through Friday, not counting court holidays.
Rule 31.04 lets a party apply for a fee waiver as part of the e-filing itself. If an older case number doesn't show up in the e-filing system, the court asks you to email the case number and name to slocourt@slo.courts.ca.gov so it can migrate the case. Our San Luis Obispo County court filing page explains how we file for this court, and our post on California court e-filing covers the process at other counties.
Papers to serve in Atascadero?
Family law proof of service rules for Atascadero cases
San Luis Obispo's local rules put a few service deadlines in writing for family cases:
- Rule 19.30 lists filing the proof of service of the summons and petition within 60 days of starting the case as a milestone the court considers at status reviews.
- Rule 19.19 says proof of service should be filed with the clerk before the hearing, or the matter may be taken off calendar. If the other side doesn't appear, the moving party has to show proof of timely service right away.
- Rule 5.03 requires a face sheet on any proof of service tied to a hearing, showing the department, hearing date and time.
The family division adds one more. To bring a Family Court Services mediator, evaluator or court investigator to testify, the court says to serve a Civil Subpoena for Personal Appearance (SUBP-001) at least 10 calendar days before the hearing. You confirm the person's availability with Family Court Services first and include a $275 witness fee check, unless an exception applies. Our proof of service guide and our post on serving a subpoena in California cover the general rules.
Atascadero State Hospital
The Department of State Hospitals runs Atascadero State Hospital at 10333 El Camino Real. DSH describes it as a secure forensic hospital, opened in 1954 and built within a secure perimeter, with an all-male patient population mostly committed by superior courts or by CDCR. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 7001, Atascadero, CA 93423-7001.
Serving a patient there is not like serving a resident at home, and serving the State of California or the department is a separate question from serving a person. If your papers involve the hospital, a patient or an employee at work, say so on the Service Request and call us before you choose Rush.
How the Sheriff's civil unit compares
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office serves civil process too. Its civil FAQ says the Sheriff needs written instructions signed by the plaintiff or the plaintiff's attorney of record under CCP § 262, and substitute signatures aren't accepted. It asks for two complete copies per person served and the defendant's name exactly as it appears on the court papers.
Our version of those instructions is the Letter of Instruction on the Service Request. Use it for what helps a server in Atascadero: the best time to find the person, a workplace on El Camino Real or elsewhere, a vehicle, and any gate, long driveway or dog at the property. Our guide on who can serve papers in California sets out the choices, from the Sheriff to a private server to an adult who isn't a party.
Addresses in and around Atascadero
Atascadero had 29,773 residents at the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate is 29,464. One Census ZIP Code area, 93422, is tied to the city.
Outlying parts of the city, and much of the land around it, are rural. Highway 41 runs west over the hills to Morro Bay, and the back roads east toward Creston are farm and ranch country. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, so expect longer timing for a property well outside town.
Before you submit, collect:
- the full street address and any unit or space number
- the community name on the papers (Atascadero, Templeton or Santa Margarita)
- a second address, such as a job site
- what happened on any earlier attempt
If the person has moved on, our skip tracing service looks for a current address. For a business, look up its agent on bizfile Online and send us that name. A company that uses a commercial agent, such as CT Corporation, is served at the agent's address. Our guide to serving a corporation covers the rest.
