Rosamond is an unincorporated community near Kern County's southern line, in the Antelope Valley. The Census Bureau counted 20,961 people in the Rosamond Census-designated place in 2020. Lancaster, about 12 miles to the south, is in Los Angeles County, and that county line decides which court system a Rosamond case belongs to.

We serve summonses and complaints, family law papers, eviction documents, small claims and subpoenas on people and businesses in Rosamond, Willow Springs and the desert parcels around them. Rosamond requests are handled from our Sacramento office, about 316 miles away, and the server makes the attempts at the Rosamond address.

A Kern case, heard in Mojave

With Lancaster so close, it's easy to assume its courthouse handles Rosamond cases. It doesn't. Lancaster's courthouses belong to the Los Angeles Superior Court. Rosamond is Kern County, and the Kern court sets venue by ZIP Code under Local Rule 1.7.4.

Its venue table, Appendix A to the local rules, lists Rosamond, Willow Springs and Actis, all ZIP 93560, under the Mojave Multi-Divisional Courthouse at 1773 State Highway 58 Business. The Mojave sheet, marked as changed effective March 12, 2025, covers more case types than some other branches:

  • Civil: civil harassment, limited civil, name changes, small claims and unlawful detainers
  • Family law: divorce, legal separation, annulment, domestic violence, custody, parentage, and child, spousal and family support
  • Criminal: felony and misdemeanor
  • Traffic: infractions and juvenile traffic

The court's Mojave page lists the phone as (661) 610-7400 and hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with Friday ending at noon. From Rosamond's Census center point, the courthouse is about 12.8 miles away in a straight line.

The Mojave sheet reaches well beyond Rosamond. It also names California City, Boron, Tehachapi, Bear Valley Springs, Stallion Springs and Golden Hills, among others. A Rosamond plaintiff and a defendant in one of those towns can end up in the same building, and so can witnesses in a Mojave criminal case. When we serve a subpoena for a hearing there, send the issued subpoena, the department and date, and where the witness can be found on a weekday. Our post on how to serve a subpoena in California covers the basics.

Which Rosamond cases leave Mojave

Kern Local Rule 1.7.5 lists the cases that must be filed in the Metropolitan Division in Bakersfield, whatever the ZIP Code. For Rosamond, that means a much longer trip for a handful of case types:

Rosamond matterCourthouseStraight-line miles from central Rosamond
Eviction, small claims, limited civil ($35,000 or less)Mojave12.8
Divorce, custody, support, domestic violenceMojave12.8
Unlimited civil, over $35,000Metropolitan Division Justice Building, 1215 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield57.2
Probate, guardianship, conservatorship, trustsJuvenile Justice Center, 2100 College Ave., Bakersfield55.7
Adoptions, abandonments, cases brought by child support servicesMetropolitan Division, Family Law Department57.2
Criminal and trafficMojave12.8

Distances run from the Census Bureau's internal point for the Rosamond CDP to the coordinates on each courthouse page. The $35,000 line comes from the court's civil and small claims page, checked October 2026.

A quiet title action is the one unlimited case with a choice. Rule 1.7.5(b) lets it be filed at the branch that's the right venue for the property, so a Rosamond parcel's title case can stay in Mojave.

Rosamond family law in Mojave

Because Mojave hears family law, most Rosamond divorces, custody cases and support cases never go to Bakersfield. A few rules decide the details:

  1. The petitioner's ZIP Code sets the courthouse. Rule 1.7.5(g)(1) ties the first family law petition to the Appendix A division for the petitioner's ZIP, filed with the local venue declaration, form FL-2427.
  2. Parentage follows the child. Under Rule 1.7.5(g)(6), a petition to establish a parental relationship is filed by the minor child's ZIP Code.
  3. Some family cases still go to Bakersfield. Rule 1.7.5(g)(3) sends adoptions, abandonments and matters with the Department of Child Support Services from the Mojave venue to the Metropolitan Division.
  4. Domestic violence requests are exempt from venue. Rule 1.7.5(g)(5) lets a DVPA request be filed outside the family venue rules, and later filings get linked to any existing case.

For a child support services case, remote appearances in the Metropolitan Division are by telephone only under Rule 1.1.1(c). The Family Law Facilitator, who helps parties without lawyers, is at 1215 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield, Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Friday until noon.

After the petition is filed, we serve the respondent where they actually are, in Rosamond, across the line in Lancaster or Palmdale, or anywhere else. Send the filed summons and petition, a blank response and a photo if more than one adult lives at the address.

Probate for a Rosamond estate

Kern's venue table lists probate, conservatorships, decedent estates, guardianships and trusts at the Juvenile Justice Center, 2100 College Avenue, Bakersfield, for all of Kern County. The court's probate page says some probate matters are set in Traffic Courtroom T1 at 3131 Arrow Street in Bakersfield instead, and that remote appearances for probate run through the J1-Probate courtroom link, with parties asked to log in 30 minutes early. Probate examiners review every filing before the hearing, and their notes are posted on the court's site.

For service in a Rosamond estate or conservatorship, list each person who gets papers, the address, and the hearing date. A proposed conservatee usually has to be served personally, so tell us about any care facility or caregiver at the address.

Papers to serve in Rosamond?

Rosamond, Willow Springs and the ZIP Code area

The 93560 ZIP Code area is far larger than the community. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file shows the Rosamond CDP covering about 30% of its land, with about 70% outside any city or Census-designated place. A small piece of the Rosamond CDP falls in the 93501 ZIP Code area, which Kern also assigns to Mojave.

So a "Rosamond, CA 93560" address can be a house in a subdivision or a parcel miles out on unpaved desert roads, in the Willow Springs or Actis areas the venue table names. Remote areas are subject to different timelines. For an outlying parcel, send:

  • The assessor's parcel number or a map pin, since desert lots don't always show a visible house number.
  • The nearest paved cross streets and how far the parcel sits from them.
  • What's on the lot. A house, a manufactured home, a trailer or an RV, and which one the person lives in.
  • Gates and animals. Fences, a locked gate, dogs.
  • A weekday location, such as a workplace in Lancaster, Mojave or on base.

Census ZIP Code areas approximate postal ZIP Codes.

Edwards Air Force Base and North Edwards

Kern's venue table lists Edwards AFB, North Edwards and Aerial Acres, all ZIP 93523, under the same Mojave courthouse. In the 2020 relationship file, the Edwards AFB Census-designated place covers about 15% of that ZIP Code area's land and North Edwards about 24%.

Base access is controlled, so give us an off-base address whenever you can: a home in Rosamond, North Edwards, Lancaster or elsewhere, or a regular off-base stop. If the base is the only address you have, tell us so, and we'll talk through options before the papers go out.

Small claims at the Mojave courthouse

A Rosamond small claim is filed and heard in Mojave. The court's civil and small claims page allows e-filing through an approved provider, filing in person at the courthouse where the claim will be heard, or filing by mail with a copy for each defendant and a self-addressed stamped envelope. An individual's limit is $12,500.

Kern's local small claims rules add timing points that matter for service:

  • Rule 2.2: the clerk can serve by certified mail, or the plaintiff can use a process server, the sheriff or any non-party adult. The plaintiff can't hand over the claim personally.
  • Rule 2.3: without a proof of service on file three calendar days before the court date, the case comes off the calendar and is dismissed without prejudice.
  • Rule 2.4: after service, either side can ask once, in writing and with the fee, for a postponement of up to 15 days, at least five court days before trial.
  • Rule 2.6.1: bring a copy of each document for the judge and for every party.

The court's Small Claims Advisor answers questions for free at (661) 610-6518.

Rosamond evictions

A Rosamond landlord files the unlawful detainer in Mojave, or e-files it there; Kern Local Rule 1.10 makes e-filing mandatory for attorneys in eviction cases. For service, send the summons, the complaint and the notice, the names of all adult occupants, and the unit, lot or space number. A tenant handed the summons has 10 court days to answer, per the state court self-help page, with more time when papers are left with someone else or posted.

From January 1, 2027, AB 747 spells out how diligence is shown before substituted service or posting: good-faith attempts at personal delivery on at least three occasions, on three different days at three different times (CCP §§ 415.20(b)(2) and 415.45). The proof of service will also include a photo of each attempt with a date, time and GPS stamp. Our AB 747 guide explains the changes, and our proof of service guide shows what the signed form contains. We make no guarantees for service.

Papers Kern won't take electronically

Even for e-filers, Kern Local Rule 1.10(l) keeps a list of documents that must be filed on paper. It includes sealed documents, subpoenaed documents, bonds, undertakings, original contracts, oversized exhibits, sister-state judgments, original wills and codicils, and any appeal documents, including notices of appeal. If a Rosamond case needs one of those, someone has to get it to the right counter. Our Kern County court filing service can take it to Mojave or Bakersfield.

Rosamond process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Is a Rosamond case filed in Lancaster?

No. Rosamond is in Kern County, and Lancaster is in Los Angeles County. Kern's venue table, Appendix A to its local rules, lists Rosamond, ZIP 93560, under the Mojave Multi-Divisional Courthouse at 1773 State Highway 58 Business. The Los Angeles court's Lancaster building doesn't take Kern cases.

Where is a Rosamond divorce filed?

The Mojave sheet in Kern's venue table lists family law there: divorce, legal separation, annulment, domestic violence, custody, parentage and support. Kern Local Rule 1.7.5(g)(1) sets the courthouse by the petitioner's ZIP Code, and the first filing includes a local venue declaration, form FL-2427.

My papers are for someone who lives on Edwards Air Force Base. Can you serve them there?

Base access is controlled, so give us an off-base address if you have one: a home in Rosamond, North Edwards or elsewhere, or a regular off-base stop. For filing purposes, Kern's venue table puts Edwards AFB, ZIP 93523, under the Mojave courthouse, the same building that hears Rosamond cases.

Can I postpone a Kern small claims hearing after the defendant is served?

Once, under Kern Local Rule 2.4. After service, a party may ask in writing for a single postponement of no more than 15 days, paying the fee to the clerk at least five court days before the trial. The clerk resets the hearing and notifies the parties.

Is Rosamond a city?

No. The Census Bureau counts Rosamond as a Census-designated place, an unincorporated community with 20,961 residents in 2020. It has no city government; Kern County provides local government. That doesn't change how papers are served.

How do I reach the Mojave courthouse?

The court's Mojave page lists (661) 610-7400 and hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to noon on Friday. Attorneys e-file under Kern Local Rule 1.10, and self-represented parties can file in person or e-file.
