Small claims

At the courthouse assigned to the venue ZIP/community (Local Rule 2.3(a)(2)(A), Appendix 2.B); the court tells filers to check the Filing Court Locator. Current locator small claims courts: Stanley Mosk, Beverly Hills, Bellflower, Chatsworth, Compton, Governor George Deukmejian (Long Beach), Inglewood, Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley, Pasadena, Van Nuys East, West Covina (Catalina for Avalon). Filing in person, by mail, or electronically through an approved EFSP. Limits $12,500 ($6,250 for businesses).

For Lancaster, the court's filing court locator sends nearly every Lancaster case type to the Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse. The one real exception is limited civil, which goes far from the valley. The other planning issue is distance: the communities around Lancaster are spread out, and some are remote.

We serve summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document at Lancaster addresses, and we file with the court. Every request is handled from our Sacramento office. Open a Service Request, or attach the PDFs to an email to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.

One courthouse for most Lancaster cases

We ran the locator for Lancaster on October 28, 2026. It assigns a courthouse by community and ZIP Code, separately for each case type. For Lancaster, six of the eight case types returned the same building.

The Antelope Valley Courthouse lists Civil, Criminal, Family Law, Juvenile Justice, Probate, Small Claims, Traffic and Unlawful Detainer. The building opens at 8:00 a.m. Its Clerk's Office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except court holidays. Free public parking sits on the south and east sides. Probate stays in the Antelope Valley

In the other Los Angeles County cities we checked this month, the locator sends probate to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse downtown. Lancaster is different. A Lancaster probate case goes to the same building on 4th Street West that hears the valley's civil and family cases.

That matters for planning a filing. A probate petition, its notices and any later papers can all go to one counter in Lancaster. Tell us the case number and the department when you send them.

Local Rule 2.3 is the reason. Probate cases generally must be filed in the Central District, but the rule allows three kinds to be filed in the North District, whose only courthouse under Local Rule 2.2 is the Antelope Valley Courthouse:

  • conservatorships and guardianships, when the petitioner or the proposed conservatee or ward lives in the North District
  • decedents' estates, when the decedent lived there or the petitioner does
  • trusts whose trustee administers the trust there

The rule says "may," so filing downtown is still allowed. Inside the Lancaster building, the directory puts the Probate Clerk's Office on the 1st floor and the Probate Attorney on the 3rd.

Dependency cases are on Avenue J

Juvenile dependency doesn't go to 4th Street West. Those cases are heard at the Alfred J. McCourtney Juvenile Justice Center, 1040 W. Avenue J, which Local Rule 2.2 lists with the Central District's outlying juvenile courts. Its clerk is in Room 1157. The directory warns that juvenile matters are confidential and that staff can't confirm a case even exists, so a counter visit won't tell you anything about a dependency file.

The exception: limited civil cases

A limited civil case asks for $35,000 or less. For Lancaster, the locator splits that category in two, and both halves leave the valley:

  • Collection cases go to the Chatsworth Courthouse, 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth 91311. Its directory lists public parking at the end of the cul-de-sac on Penfield Ave.
  • Non-collection cases go to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, 111 North Hill Street, Los Angeles 90012.

So a creditor suing a Lancaster debtor for $20,000 files in Chatsworth, not on 4th Street West. A demand over $35,000 makes the case unlimited civil, and the locator keeps that in Lancaster. The tool adds a caution: falling inside a district doesn't necessarily mean the case must be assigned there. Chapter 2 of the court's Local Rules sets the criteria, and the Clerk's Office can confirm.

For a filing at either distant courthouse, eFiling often makes more sense than a counter trip. The court's civil e-filing FAQ requires attorneys to e-file in civil cases unless the court has granted an exemption order. Either way works for us: we file at the counter or by eFiling, depending on the document.

Papers to serve in Lancaster?

Lancaster, Palmdale and the shared ZIP

The Census Bureau ties three ZIP Code areas to Lancaster: 93534, 93535 and 93536. One of them, 93535, also overlaps Palmdale in the same Census file. A 93535 address can sit in either city, so the ZIP alone won't tell you which.

The locator lists three more ZIP Codes under the Lancaster community: 93539, 93584 and 93586. None of them is a Census ZIP Code area in our data. If the address you have uses one, check whether it's a post office box before you send it. The court's tool cautions that the town printed on a mailing address can differ from where the parcel lies. Its advice is to confirm against municipal boundaries.

Outlying communities and timing

Lancaster's neighbors range from a city of similar size to places with a few hundred residents. Distances below are straight-line, from our Census data:

Hi Vista22.8no Census count published
Llano24.1no Census count published
Valyermo25.1no Census count published

For Acton, Lake Hughes, Littlerock, Pearblossom, Hi Vista, Llano, Valyermo and similar outlying addresses, remote areas are subject to different timelines. Call us before you choose Rush for one of them. On October 29, 2026, we also ran the locator for Lake Los Angeles, Hi Vista, Redman, Roosevelt and Wilsona Gardens (93535), Llano (93544), Juniper Hills and Littlerock (93543), and Longview and Pearblossom (93553). Every one matched Lancaster, including the Chatsworth and Stanley Mosk answers for limited civil. Acton wasn't part of that check, so run an Acton address yourself.

Addresses out there are easier to find with more detail. Put these in the Letter of Instruction:

  • the street address plus the nearest cross street
  • a description of the gate, the mailbox or the driveway
  • directions you or your client have used to reach it
  • a phone number for the person, if you have one
  • the days someone is usually home, since the next attempt may be a long drive away

Eviction and small claims papers in Lancaster

Both case types stay at the Antelope Valley Courthouse, so the summons a Lancaster tenant or small claims defendant receives will name that building. For landlords, the eviction complaint changes on January 1, 2027. From that date, the complaint has to give the date, hour and place of service of the termination notice (CCP § 1166(a)(5), as amended). If a notice goes out now and the case may be filed next year, log all three facts.

In small claims, the person suing can't serve the papers. California allows service by any adult 18 or older who isn't a party (CCP § 414.10). The server then signs the proof, usually form SC-104 in small claims. Our post on who can serve court papers in California goes through the options.

Personal and substituted service at a valley address

Personal service is complete when the papers are handed to the person (CCP § 415.10). If that fails after reasonable effort, substituted service is the next step (CCP § 415.20). The server leaves the papers with a competent household member or a person apparently in charge at work, then mails a copy. It can't be done at a U.S. Postal Service post office box.

That's one more reason a workplace address helps on a Lancaster request. If home attempts fail, a business address gives the server a second lawful place to complete service.

When the Lancaster address is out of date

A tenant who left, a debtor who moved to another valley town, or an old address on a judgment all call for research. Skip tracing researches where the person is now, and nothing goes back out until you approve the result. Every update comes in the same email thread. Before that step, read How to Find a Defendant in California for Service for the checks you can run yourself. We make no guarantees for service.

Neighboring places

Palmdale is the closest city. Acton, Lake Hughes, Littlerock, Pearblossom, Hi Vista, Llano and Valyermo are nearby communities we serve too. Rosamond is in Kern County. For filings, see our Los Angeles County court filing page. Every other city in the county is on our Los Angeles County page.

Is probate for a Lancaster estate filed in downtown Los Angeles?

No. The court's filing court locator keeps Lancaster probate at the Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse, 42011 4th Street West. Across the other cities we checked, probate goes to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse downtown. Lancaster is the exception. Source: lacourt.ca.gov, checked October 2026.

Where is a collection case against a Lancaster debtor filed?

It depends on the amount. A collection case over $35,000 is unlimited civil and stays at the Antelope Valley Courthouse. At $35,000 or less, it's limited civil, and the locator sends it to the Chatsworth Courthouse, 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth 91311. Local Rules Chapter 2 sets the criteria.

Can you serve papers in Lake Hughes, Littlerock or Pearblossom?

Yes, we take Service Requests for those communities. They sit roughly 16 to 20 miles from Lancaster, and remote areas are subject to different timelines. Call 855-582-5776 before you choose Rush for one of them, and give us directions, a cross street and any gate details you have.

Does the Los Angeles court handle a defendant in Rosamond?

Rosamond is across the county line in Kern County, about 12 miles from Lancaster, so the Los Angeles locator won't place it. Serving a Rosamond resident works the same way on our end. Which court hears the case depends on where it was filed, and the summons will say.

How far is Lancaster from your office?

Lancaster is 327.4 miles from our office at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833, in a straight line. We have no office in the Antelope Valley, and you don't need to visit one. Send the request online or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

The only Lancaster address I have is a P.O. box. Can it be served?

Not as it stands. Substituted service can't be left at a U.S. Postal Service post office box (CCP § 415.20), and personal service needs the person. Send what you have, and ask about skip tracing to find a street address or workplace first.

Is a Lake Los Angeles eviction filed in Lancaster?

Yes. We ran Lake Los Angeles under both of its ZIP Codes, 93535 and 93591, and each time the locator sent limited unlawful detainer and small claims to the Antelope Valley Courthouse. A limited collection case still goes to Chatsworth. For an address out there, remote areas are subject to different timelines.
