Riverside is the county seat, and its courts sit along Main Street downtown. That doesn't mean every Riverside case is filed there. The Superior Court of California, County of Riverside, splits its civil work by case type and by ZIP Code, so a single city can send papers to three different buildings. This page sorts that out first, then covers what we need from you to serve a Riverside address.

Valpro Attorney Services handles Riverside Service Requests from our Sacramento office, about 396 miles away in a straight line. The papers are served at the Riverside address you give us, and the proof of service comes back to you for filing.

Which Riverside courthouse takes my case?

For a Riverside address, unlimited civil and probate go to the Riverside Historic Courthouse at 4050 Main Street. Family law goes to the Family Law Courthouse at 4175 Main Street. Limited civil, evictions and small claims are split between the Corona Courthouse and the Moreno Valley Courthouse by ZIP Code, under an Administrative Order effective August 1, 2026.

The dollar lines come from the court's civil division page. Corona's courthouse is at 505 S. Buena Vista Ave., Room 201. Moreno Valley's is at 13800 Heacock Street, Building D, #201. Complex cases from anywhere in the county are filed at the Historic Courthouse and assigned to Department 1.

How does the ZIP Code split work inside Riverside?

The city covers 8 Census ZIP Code areas. Each one lands in a fixed column of the court's civil order. Unlimited civil, family law and probate don't change with the ZIP. Everything else does.

Notice 92505. It's the one Riverside ZIP that the order treats differently for small claims than for limited civil. A limited civil contract case from a 92505 address goes to Corona, while a small claims case from the same street goes to Moreno Valley.

Which party's ZIP counts? Local Rule 3115 says the court applies the state venue statutes, Code of Civil Procedure sections 392 through 401, when it picks the courthouse. Under those rules an eviction generally follows the rental property, and a contract or injury case often follows where a defendant lives. Attorneys filing a first pleading also attach a Certificate of Counsel naming the proper branch and the reason (Local Rule 3117). This is general information, not legal advice. The court itself suggests asking the clerk or an attorney when the ZIP is unclear.

Filing in Riverside: e-filing, counters and the 4 p.m. cutoff

If you're represented by counsel, a Riverside civil filing goes in electronically. Local Rule 3118 has required e-filing for represented parties in limited and unlimited civil cases, unlawful detainers included, since January 1, 2022. People handling their own case may e-file or use the counter.

A few details from the court's own pages, read in archived copies from 2026:

  • Hours. The Historic, Family Law, Corona and Moreno Valley clerk's offices are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Phone lines close at 2:00 p.m.
  • Drop boxes. Every one of those four buildings has a drop box. Paper left after 4:00 p.m. is processed the next court day.
  • Electronic filing time. A document the court receives electronically by 11:59:59 p.m. on a court day counts as filed that day, if accepted.
  • eSubmit. The court's eSubmit portal stopped taking civil, eviction and small claims documents on January 1, 2022. The court's notice kept it open for family law and probate.

When a case needs a filing before anyone can be served, such as a new complaint that has to come back with an issued summons, we can do both steps on one request. See Riverside County court filing for what that covers, and our post on California court e-filing for how e-filing works for law offices.

Papers to serve in Riverside?

Motion hearings on Zoom, and records on Main Street

Much of the court time in a Riverside civil case can happen by video. The court's remote appearance page says it strongly encourages remote appearances at civil hearings with no testimony, such as motions, case management conferences and orders to show cause other than contempt, under Local Rule 3132. The person appearing remotely tells the opposing parties ahead of time, informally if they like, by phone, email or text, and the court needs no advance notice. If the judge won't allow a remote appearance that day, the hearing is continued to a date set for in-person attendance. Family law has a parallel rule, Local Rule 5161. Trials and evidentiary hearings are different: notice goes to every party on form RA-010, and the other side can object on form RA-015.

Remote hearings don't change service. A motion still has to be served on the other parties by the code deadline, and Local Rule 3118 says a self-represented party gets it by non-electronic means unless they agree otherwise.

For research, the court's records page says Riverside civil cases are online from October 1991, family law cases from about April 1992 and probate from about July 1994. The Historic Courthouse's civil clerk's office and the Family Law Courthouse lobby both have public viewing computers, free to use from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. Searching one name yourself online costs $1, and a court-run search is $15 a name. Copies run $1 a page for the first 5 pages, then $0.50, up to $50 per document. When you'd rather not make the trip, document retrieval pulls the pages for you.

What should the Letter of Instruction say for a Riverside address?

The detail you give decides how many trips it takes. Riverside mixes a downtown office core, older neighborhoods, newer tracts and a university, and each needs something different.

  • Downtown and office buildings (92501). Name the suite and the business name on the door. A lobby directory doesn't always list every tenant, and a receptionist may not know a name without the company.
  • UC Riverside (92521). The campus address is 900 University Ave. A student or employee needs a building, department or residence hall and room. A class or work schedule saves the most time.
  • Apartment complexes. Give the building letter and unit. If there's a gate, tell us the call box name or code, or say there isn't one.
  • Homes. Tell us who else lives there, the usual hours someone is home, and any vehicle you know of. Those details matter if substituted service becomes the fallback.
  • Workplaces. A work address with shift times is a useful second address, especially for someone who isn't home during the day.

Substituted service in California means leaving the papers with a competent adult at the home, or with the person apparently in charge at the office, then mailing a copy (CCP § 415.20). The server records each attempt, so the dates and times show up on the proof of service if substituted service is used.

The updates come to you by email. If the person has moved, our skip tracing and investigations work looks for a current address. Our post on finding a defendant in California explains what that research involves.

Custody cases at 4175 Main Street

A Riverside custody or visitation dispute usually reaches Family Court Services before a judge rules. The court's page says Family Code § 3170 requires mediation when parents ask for custody or visitation orders and don't agree, and that in Riverside County a Child Custody Recommending Counselor handles it, writing a recommendation if there's no agreement. The counselor considers only documents filed with the court. So any declaration meant for that session should be filed and served on the other parent first.

Serving a company with a Riverside address

A corporation or LLC is served through its agent for service of process, the person or company named in its Secretary of State filings (Corporations Code §§ 1502 and 17701.13). A business with a Riverside storefront may list its agent somewhere else entirely, even outside the county. Look up the entity on bizfile Online before you send the request, and give us the agent's name and address as listed.

If the listed agent has left, or the address is a closed office, tell us in the Letter of Instruction. Our guide to serving corporations covers serving officers, registered agent companies and businesses formed outside California.

Proof of service for each Riverside case type

The form the server signs depends on the case, and each Riverside courthouse expects the right one.

  • Civil cases at the Historic Courthouse, Corona or Moreno Valley: POS-010 for a summons and complaint.
  • Family law at 4175 Main Street: FL-115 for the petition and summons.
  • Small claims: SC-104. Under the Judicial Council's instructions on SC-104B (revised January 1, 2026), personal service has to happen at least 15 days before the trial date, or 20 days if the party is outside Riverside County. Substituted service needs more lead time, 25 days, or 30 days outside the county.

Choose Rush or Standard when you start a Service Request. A small claims trial that's only a few weeks out is a reason to say so in the Letter of Instruction, so the schedule leaves room for a second attempt. We make no guarantees for service.

Nearby cities and the county line

Several of Riverside's neighbors share its county and its court, among them Jurupa Valley, Norco, Eastvale and Moreno Valley. To the north, Grand Terrace and Colton are in San Bernardino County, which runs its own superior court with its own filing rules. The rest of the county is on our Riverside County page.

Which courthouse do I file a Riverside eviction in?

It depends on the ZIP Code. Under the court's Administrative Order on where to file civil documents, effective August 1, 2026, unlawful detainers from Riverside ZIPs 92503, 92504 and 92505 go to the Corona Courthouse, and those from 92501, 92506, 92507, 92508 and 92521 go to the Moreno Valley Courthouse. That holds even when the amount makes the case unlimited.

Why does my 92505 small claims case go to a different courthouse than my 92505 limited civil case?

Because the court's order lists them separately. For limited civil, evictions and civil harassment restraining orders, 92505 is assigned to Corona. For small claims, the same order puts 92505 with Moreno Valley. Check the case type before you send the SC-100, or the clerk may tell you it belongs elsewhere.

Do attorneys have to e-file in Riverside civil cases?

Yes. Riverside Local Rule 3118 makes e-filing mandatory for parties represented by counsel in limited and unlimited civil cases, including unlawful detainers, and has since January 1, 2022. Self-represented parties may e-file but don't have to. Filings go through an approved electronic filing service provider.

Can you serve someone who works or studies at UC Riverside?

Yes. The campus mailing address is 900 University Ave., Riverside, CA 92521. Give us the building, department or residence hall and room number in the Letter of Instruction, plus a schedule if you have one. A campus is large, so a name with no building usually means extra attempts.

Where is the Riverside family law courthouse?

At 4175 Main Street, a short walk from the Historic Courthouse. The court's family law filing order sends every Riverside ZIP Code, 92501 through 92522, to this building. Divorce, custody and support papers filed there are usually proved on form FL-115 after service.

How far is Riverside from your office?

About 396 miles in a straight line from our office at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833. We don't have a Riverside office. Your Service Request is handled from Sacramento, the papers are served at the Riverside address, and each update comes to you by email.

Can I check a Riverside eviction case online right after it's filed?

Usually not. The court's records page says unlawful detainer cases are confidential for their first 60 days and can't be viewed online. An interested party who supplies one plaintiff's name, one defendant's name and the property address can still get access. After that, the case shows in the court's public portal like other civil cases.

Can a Riverside small claims plaintiff get free help with the forms?

Yes. The court's Small Claims Advisory program, run through its Self-Help Center, has a paralegal who answers procedural questions at no charge, from filing the claim to collecting on the judgment. Help is by phone or in person. The advisor can't give legal advice. One of the numbers the court lists is (951) 274-4499.
