Pleasanton sits in the Amador Valley at the south end of the Tri-Valley, and it had 79,871 residents at the 2020 Census. Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, complaints, subpoenas, family law papers, restraining orders and landlord notices at Pleasanton addresses, and we handle the filing side of Pleasanton cases in Alameda County Superior Court.
We run every request from our Sacramento office, about 68.6 miles away. We don't keep a Tri-Valley location. You send the papers online, and you can get status updates by email.
Why isn't a Pleasanton civil case filed in Dublin?
The closest courthouse to Pleasanton is the East County Hall of Justice at 5151 Gleason Drive, roughly 3 miles north of the city's Census center point. It is a criminal and traffic building. The court's page lists those two case types, departments 701 through 713, and jury service. It does not list civil, family law, small claims or probate.
So the paperwork for most Pleasanton lawsuits travels west over the hills:
| Pleasanton matter | Filing counter | Hearing |
|---|---|---|
| Civil complaint, answer, motion | Hayward Hall of Justice, 24405 Amador St, or René C. Davidson Courthouse, 1225 Fallon St, Oakland | The assigned department |
| Unlawful detainer | Either civil counter, or e-file | Department 511, Hayward |
| Small claims | Hayward, Oakland or online | In person in Hayward |
| Divorce, custody, support, DV orders | Hayward Hall of Justice (DVPA order papers may also go to Davidson) | Hayward |
| Probate, conservatorship, guardianship | Berkeley Courthouse clerk's office only, 2120 Martin Luther King Jr. Way | Berkeley, or Dept. 103 at 661 Washington St, Oakland |
| Criminal, traffic | East County Hall of Justice, Dublin | Dublin |

Measured straight-line from central Pleasanton, Hayward is about 11.7 miles and Oakland's Fallon Street courthouse about 22.8. Berkeley is close to 26. For a self-represented Pleasanton filer, that's a real trip for a single counter visit.
Getting a Pleasanton filing in on time
The Hayward clerk's office takes walk-up filings Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Friday until 2:00 p.m. After the window shuts, a drop box takes papers until 4:00 p.m. Those cutoffs matter more from Pleasanton than from Hayward itself, since the round trip alone can use up an afternoon.
For attorneys, the trip is mostly optional. The court's e-filing FAQ says litigants with a lawyer have had to e-file in all civil cases since January 1, 2022 (Local Rule 3.27), evictions and small claims included. Self-represented filers may still use the counter. We can do either: e-file the papers for you or carry them to the Hayward or Oakland counter when a document has to be filed on paper. Our Alameda County court filing page explains the county's rules, and the post on court e-filing in California covers what to send us.
If you do drive, the court's Hayward page notes a parking garage across the street and limited two-hour meters behind the building. The nearest BART station is Hayward, about 1.2 miles away, and AC Transit buses connect it to the courthouse.
The Dublin courthouse still comes up
Pleasanton cases touch the East County Hall of Justice in two common ways. A criminal defense team may need a witness subpoenaed for a hearing there, and a traffic matter can generate papers too. Witness subpoenas are served on the witness wherever that person can be found, at home or at work, not at the courthouse.
The court lists free parking in the lot next to the Dublin building. The nearest BART station is Dublin/Pleasanton, and Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority buses run from the station to the courthouse. Our guide to serving a subpoena in California covers witness fees and timing.
What we need for a Pleasanton Service Request
- The documents as PDFs. Up to 5 files: summons, complaint, civil case cover sheet, notice of hearing, or a subpoena with its attachments.
- The person's or company's exact name. For a business, copy it from the Secretary of State record.
- Every address you know. Home first, then work. If the person commutes, a weekday workplace and an evening home address give two chances.
- Notes that save an attempt. A gate code, a guard booth, the car they drive, a photo, the hours they're usually home.
- Your deadline. A hearing date or a service deadline goes at the top of the Letter of Instruction.
Choose Rush or Standard on the form. Questions go to 855-582-5776 or Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.
Papers to serve in Pleasanton?
Pleasanton ZIP Code areas and the hills beyond the city
Two Census ZIP Code areas cover Pleasanton: 94566 and 94588. Neither one matches the city limits, and that affects how you describe an address.
- 94566. About two-thirds of its land is inside Pleasanton. Most of the rest is outside any city or Census community, with small pieces in Sunol and a sliver in Livermore.
- 94588. Only about a third of its land is inside Pleasanton. Close to two-thirds lies outside any city or community, and the Census also places small parts in Sunol and in the city of Hayward.
Those figures come from the Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file. ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes, so a "Pleasanton" mailing address can belong to a house in unincorporated Alameda County. Sunol, for example, is an unincorporated Census community in Alameda County.
For service, that changes the drive and the access, not the law. Ridge and canyon properties can sit behind a locked gate at the end of a long private road. Send a map pin and gate instructions, and remember that remote areas are subject to different timelines. Inside the city, subdivisions with HOA gates are the usual hurdle. A resident's guest code or a note about the guard booth saves a wasted trip.
Serving a Pleasanton company or employee
Pleasanton has business parks as well as storefront shops. For the company itself, serve the agent for service of process named on the California Secretary of State's bizfile Online record. That agent is often a commercial registered agent with an office elsewhere in the state, so the papers may be served outside Pleasanton even though the company operates here.
If the agent is a commercial agent such as CSC or CT Corporation, see those pages for how delivery works. Our guide to serving corporations covers serving an officer and court-ordered service through the Secretary of State.
For an employee being sued personally, the office lobby is rarely the best place. Front desks in a business park often won't call the person down. A home address, or a parking lot window you know about, tends to work better. Put what you know in the Letter of Instruction.
Who can serve your Pleasanton papers
A party can't serve their own papers in California. Under CCP § 414.10, any adult who is not a party to the case can, and a process server is the usual choice when the proof has to hold up. The guide on who can serve papers in California explains the rule. After service, the server signs the proof, and the guide on proof of service shows what it should contain.
Starting January 1, 2027, AB 747 changes how substituted service and proofs work statewide. Our AB 747 guide lays out the new steps. We make no guarantees for service.
When the Pleasanton address is stale
People move between Tri-Valley cities often. If our attempts show the person no longer lives at the address, ask about skip tracing. We look for a current address and, once you approve, send the papers back out. The post on finding a defendant in California lists the details that help most. For a judgment or an earlier proof from an existing file, use document retrieval.
