Livermore is the largest city in the Tri-Valley, with 87,955 residents at the 2020 Census and 83,457 in the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimate. It sits at the east end of Alameda County, where the suburbs give way to open hills, about 18 miles from the nearest civil courthouse.
We serve legal papers on people and businesses across Livermore: summonses and complaints, subpoenas, family law papers, restraining orders and landlord notices. We work from Sacramento and have no Livermore office.
How do I hire a process server in Livermore?
Submit a Service Request with the papers attached as PDFs, up to 5 files. Name the person or business, give every Livermore address you have, and choose Rush or Standard. Put access details in the Letter of Instruction. We make the attempts and return the proof of service to you.
Here's what helps most on a Livermore request:
- Which part of town. Downtown, the north side near the freeway, the south side toward the vineyards, or a rural parcel outside the city limits. Each needs a different approach.
- A second address. If the person works elsewhere in the Bay Area or over the Altamont, the workplace gives the server a weekday option.
- Gate and driveway notes. Rural and semi-rural properties may have a locked gate, a long drive or dogs. Tell us what you know.
- The date you need it by. A hearing date or a statute deadline belongs at the top of the Letter of Instruction.
You can get each update by email. Questions: 855-582-5776 or Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Where do Livermore cases go to court?
Livermore has no courthouse of its own, and the nearest one, the East County Hall of Justice at 5151 Gleason Drive in Dublin, hears only criminal and traffic cases. A civil complaint has to go west, to the Hall of Justice on Amador Street in Hayward or to Fallon Street in Oakland. Hayward also takes the family law filings and holds the eviction and small claims hearings.
| Case type | Courthouse | Straight-line from central Livermore |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal, traffic | East County Hall of Justice, 5151 Gleason Dr, Dublin | about 7 miles |
| Civil, limited and unlimited | Hayward Hall of Justice, 24405 Amador St, or René C. Davidson Courthouse, 1225 Fallon St, Oakland | about 18 miles to Hayward, 29 to Oakland |
| Unlawful detainer | Dept. 511, Hayward Hall of Justice | about 18 miles |
| Small claims | Filed in Hayward, Oakland or by e-filing; heard in Hayward | about 18 miles |
| Family law | Hayward Hall of Justice | about 18 miles |
| Probate | Berkeley Courthouse, 2120 Martin Luther King Jr. Way | about 31 miles |

The Dublin courthouse still matters for some Livermore work. Walk-up hours at its criminal clerk run 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday, closing at 2:00 p.m. on Fridays. A subpoena for a witness in a Dublin criminal hearing is served on the witness wherever they are.
Filing a Livermore case without the drive
The Hayward and Oakland counters are a long trip from Livermore, so e-filing does most of the work. Attorneys have no choice: the court's FAQ says lawyers have had to e-file every civil case, unlawful detainer and small claims included, since January 1, 2022 (Local Rule 3.27). Self-represented filers may still go in person.
Two limits from the court's pages are worth knowing before a deadline. Civil e-filing shuts down after midnight on the fourth Friday of every month and comes back by noon Saturday. And documents the court won't take electronically, such as bonds, undertakings, certified judgments and sister-state judgments, go to a Clerk's Office or by mail.
We file Livermore cases either way, in person in Hayward or Oakland or through eFiling. See our Alameda County court filing page for the county's filing details, or Court Filings for courts elsewhere in California.
Papers to serve in Livermore?
What makes Livermore service different?
Livermore mixes three kinds of addresses inside 2 Census ZIP Code areas, 94550 and 94551. There's a walkable downtown with apartments over shops, large subdivisions north and south of it, and ranch and vineyard parcels on the valley's edges. The farther out the address, the more the Letter of Instruction matters.
- Downtown. Mixed-use buildings around First Street can have upstairs units with their own street doors. Give the unit number and which door it uses.
- Subdivisions. Most homes are easy to find, but the person may not be home during the day. Evening and weekend attempts are where the schedule notes pay off.
- Ranch, vineyard and hill parcels. Our turnaround wording covers this directly: remote areas are subject to different timelines. Locked gates, unmarked drives and long setbacks are normal. Send a map pin, gate instructions and a description of the house.
- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The Department of Energy lab at 7000 East Avenue is a major workplace, and access to its grounds is controlled. Serve its employees at home where you can.
Census ZIP Code areas only approximate postal ZIP Codes (2020 ZCTA to place relationship file). Some Livermore mailing addresses sit outside the city limits in unincorporated Alameda County. Service doesn't change, but give the full address as written.
How do I serve a Livermore business?
Start with bizfile Online, the Secretary of State's search, to find who the company named to accept service. California requires corporations and LLCs to keep an agent on file with the Secretary of State (Corporations Code §§ 1502(b) and 17701.13). A small owner-run business may list the owner as its agent, while a larger company may use a commercial registered agent in another city.
Send the agent's name and address with the papers, and we serve the agent where the agent is. For an owner-run Livermore business, that's often the owner at the shop or tasting room. Our guide to serving corporations in California explains officers, LLC managers and court-ordered service through the Secretary of State.
The Tri-Valley county line
Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin are in Alameda County. San Ramon and Danville, a short drive north, are in Contra Costa County. Over the Altamont Pass to the east, Tracy is in San Joaquin County. A person can be served in any of them for a case filed anywhere in California.
The county line matters only for filing. An Alameda County case files in Hayward or Oakland, while a Contra Costa or San Joaquin case files with that county's own court. If your Livermore defendant works in Tracy or San Ramon, list both addresses and we'll use whichever reaches the person first. See Tracy and San Ramon for those sides of the line.
What AB 747 means for Livermore in 2027
From January 1, 2027, the reasonable diligence needed before substituted service is shown by attempting personal delivery on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Proofs of service will need photos of each attempt, stamped with date, time and GPS coordinates (CCP § 417.10(a)(1)).
For a rural Livermore parcel, three separate trips on three days is a real cost, so a second address for the person is worth more than ever. Our AB 747 guide lists every change. This is general information, not legal advice. We make no guarantees for service.
If the Livermore address doesn't work
Ask about skip tracing. Send the last known address and anything else you know, such as a workplace or a phone number. We research a current address and send it to you, and once you approve it the papers go back out. Our post on skip tracing for legal cases explains the process. For copies from a court file, use document retrieval.
