Hayward had 162,954 residents at the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau puts it at 157,113 for July 1, 2025. For legal work it matters more than its size suggests: the Hall of Justice on Amador Street is where Alameda County sends its eviction cases, its small claims hearings and all of its family law filings.
We serve papers on people and businesses at Hayward homes, apartments, shops and industrial sites. Our office is in Sacramento, 75.7 miles away in a straight line, and we have no Hayward office. Requests come in online or to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.
How do I get papers served in Hayward?
Open a Service Request, attach the papers as PDFs (up to 5), and give us the full name of the person or business plus every Hayward address you know. Pick Rush or Standard, then use the Letter of Instruction for the details that save attempts. The proof of service comes back to you when service is complete.
Hayward details worth putting in the Letter of Instruction:
- Apartment and complex names. Large complexes along Mission Boulevard and Tennyson Road can have several buildings under one street number. Give the building letter and unit.
- Work hours. If the person works an early or overnight shift, tell us when they leave and when they get home.
- A second location. A workplace, a relative's house or a gym gives the server another chance on a different day.
- Identifying details. A recent photo, a vehicle and plate, the languages spoken in the home.
Get each update by email. Questions go to 855-582-5776, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

The Hayward Hall of Justice at 24405 Amador Street lists more case types than any other Alameda County courthouse. The court lists civil, family law, small claims, unlawful detainer, restraining orders, domestic violence, name changes and appeals there, in Departments 502–522, with the Self-Help Center in Department 501.

The civil and family law counters are open in person Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m., and they answer phones weekdays until 3:00 p.m. Each has a drop box for the last hour, Monday through Thursday 3:00–4:00 p.m. and Friday 2:00–4:00 p.m. The building itself opens 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
How do I file at the Hayward courthouse in person?
Go to the civil or family law clerk at 24405 Amador Street, or use the drop box after the window closes. The court also runs online appointments for the Hayward clerk's office: civil, small claims, civil harassment, unlawful detainer and landlord-tenant filings, family law, restraining orders, adoptions and document pick-up.
Getting there takes a plan. The court says street parking is limited, with a garage across the street and some two-hour meters behind the building. Hayward BART is 1.2 miles away, and AC Transit buses connect the station to the courthouse.
Attorneys mostly skip the counter. The court's e-filing FAQ says represented parties must e-file in all civil cases, including unlawful detainer and small claims, as of January 1, 2022 (Local Rule 3.27), and its FAQ PDF made family law and probate e-filing mandatory for attorneys from October 23, 2023. Self-represented parties may still file on paper.
We file in Hayward either way, at the window or by eFiling. More on county filing rules is on our Alameda County court filing page.
Papers to serve in Hayward?
Serving family law papers in Hayward
Because every Alameda County family law case files in Hayward, a lot of what we serve here is a petition, a response, a request for order or a restraining order. California law bars a party from serving their own papers: the server must be 18 or older and not a party (CCP § 414.10).
Family law service often has a deadline set by a hearing date on the papers. Send the full packet as filed, with the endorsed first page, and tell us the hearing date in the Letter of Instruction. If there's a restraining order, note whether the other party knows about it and anything the server should know about safety at the address.
Serving an eviction or small claims case from Hayward
Both case types run on short clocks, and both are heard in Hayward. A small claims defendant who lives in Alameda County must be served at least 15 days before the hearing, or at least 20 days before it if they live outside the county (CCP § 116.340(b)).
For an unlawful detainer, give us the unit number exactly as it appears on the lease and complaint, and the names of every adult occupant you are suing. Landlords and property managers can send the summons, complaint and any attachments in one request. The case itself will be assigned to Department 511.
Our post on rush legal document service explains how to send a request when the hearing date is close. If the date is tomorrow, pick Rush on the form, then call 855-582-5776.
Where in Hayward is service harder?
Hayward runs from the bay shoreline up into the East Bay hills, and its 5 Census ZIP Code areas, 94541, 94542, 94544, 94545 and 94587, hold very different kinds of buildings. Industrial parks sit west of the freeway, dense apartments line the main corridors, and quieter hill streets climb toward the university.
- The Hayward hills. Cal State East Bay's Hayward campus sits up the hill. For a student, an off-campus address or a known class time helps more than the name of a campus building.
- West Hayward industrial areas. Warehouses and distribution sites near the shoreline often have one staffed entrance. Name the company, the shift and the dock or office the person works from.
- Unincorporated neighbors. San Lorenzo, Castro Valley and other county-run communities border the city. San Lorenzo shares 94541 with Hayward, and 94587 also covers Union City. Give the full street address, and we serve whichever side of the line it falls on.
These ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes, from the 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file.
Serving a Hayward business
Find the company's agent for service of process on bizfile Online, the Secretary of State's search. California corporations and LLCs have to keep an agent on file (Corporations Code §§ 1502(b) and 17701.13). Send us that name and address with the papers. For a sole proprietor, serve the owner.
A Hayward warehouse or franchise location is often run from somewhere else, and its registered agent may be in another county. That's fine: we serve the agent where the agent is. Our guide to serving corporations walks through officers, dissolved companies and court-ordered service through the Secretary of State.
What changes for Hayward service on January 1, 2027
AB 747 says how diligence before substituted service is shown: attempts at personal delivery on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Proofs of service will also need date, time and GPS-stamped photos of each attempt (CCP § 417.10(a)(1)).
For a shift worker in Hayward, three days at three different times can mean a pre-dawn try, an afternoon try and a late evening try. The more you tell us about the person's schedule, the fewer wasted visits. Read our AB 747 guide for the full change list. This is general information, not legal advice. We make no guarantees for service.
If the Hayward address goes cold
When the person has moved, ask about skip tracing. Send the last known address and anything else you have, such as an employer or a phone number. We research a current address and send it to you, and once you approve it, the papers go back out. For copies from an existing case file, use document retrieval.
