Marysville is the incorporated city where Yuba County keeps its courthouse, about 37 miles north of our Sacramento office. We serve summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document at Marysville homes and businesses, and we can file the case at Fifth Street on the same request.
The courthouse is downtown
A Marysville case doesn't travel far. Yuba Superior Court sits in the Yuba County Courthouse at 215 Fifth Street, Suite 200, about 0.8 miles from the city's Census center point, and it's the only courthouse the court lists. The Civil Division's contact block gives a phone line at (530) 740-1800, extension 6, and a fax number, (530) 740-1821.
The court's pages disagree slightly on hours. The location page shows 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, while the Civil Division and unlawful detainer pages show office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Arriving after 8:30 avoids the question.
Two other offices you may need are in the same building:
- The Sheriff's Civil Department, Suite 150, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed from noon to 1:00 p.m.
- The Self-Help Center, Suite 318 on the third floor.
Our Yuba County court filing service handles Marysville filings electronically or at the counter. The Yuba County hub covers the rest of the county.
Monday calendars and Tuesday trials
Yuba runs its civil, probate and case management hearings on fixed days. Local Rule 3.5 lists the calendars:
- Probate, Mondays at 9:00 a.m.
- Civil law and motion, Mondays at 10:00 a.m.
- Case management conferences, Mondays at 1:30 p.m.
The Civil Division FAQ adds that long cause court trials and jury trials start on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. unless Monday is a holiday, and that trial dates are set at the case management conference. Each moving paper on the Monday law and motion calendar carries a $30 court reporter fee, paid when the paper is filed, even when one party files several.
Phone appearances on those Monday calendars go through CourtCall. You serve a Request for Telephonic Calendar Appearance on the other parties and deliver it to CourtCall at least 5 court days before the hearing, and CourtCall bills you directly. Local Rule 3.5 also allows remote appearances under CCP § 367.75 and Rule 3.675 of the California Rules of Court.
One thing Yuba doesn't do yet is post tentative rulings. The local rules adopt the Rule 3.1308(a)(2) procedure but say the court will announce it 30 days before starting. Plan to argue the motion at the hearing.
Continuances and ex parte requests
Continuances cost money in Yuba. Under the local rules, a continuance request carries a $20 fee due the moment the request is made, whether in writing or orally in court. The court won't take part of the fee or collect the rest from the other side. If the fee isn't paid before the continued date, the event comes off calendar and has to be re-noticed with new moving papers.
The Civil Division FAQ narrows how law and motion continuances can be requested: by a written stipulation filed with the court, or by oral agreement followed by written notice to the court, with proof of service on the other side, before the hearing. Trial continuances take a noticed motion with declarations.
Ex parte matters follow Rule 3.1200 and the rules after it. The applicant calls the judicial secretary at (530) 740-1800, option 8, to arrange a time no later than the deadline for giving notice to the other side. A courtesy copy of the application is due by 2:00 p.m. the day before. The processing fee is $40 if no hearing is needed and $60 if one is. Whenever practicable, the moving papers should reach the other party before the hearing by personal delivery, fax, express mail or similar means. When that delivery has to happen in Marysville the same day, choose Rush.
Family law hearings by phone or video
Family law has its own remote rules in Yuba. The local rules let attorneys and self-represented parties appear remotely on the family law and motion calendars, set on Mondays at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. CourtCall arrangements are due by noon on the Thursday of the week before the hearing, and the party pays CourtCall directly. Family Court Services can also give out the courtroom's own remote login at no cost.
Long cause hearings and trials are different. Counsel, parties and witnesses appear in person unless the parties stipulate otherwise or the court grants a request under CCP § 367.75 and Rule 3.672.
Domestic violence restraining order hearings have a shorter notice rule. Under Local Rule 10.0, a party or witness may appear remotely after giving one court day's notice on form RA-010. The court staffs a help line for those remote appearances at (530) 740-1817, starting 30 minutes before each hearing. Those hearings are set Tuesday through Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. The restraining order papers still have to be served before the hearing, and Rush is the option when the date is close.
When a Marysville case settles
Yuba's Local Rule 3.2 puts the burden on counsel once a civil case settles. The court has to be told in writing right away, and orally first if a hearing or trial is close. If the case settles within 5 calendar days of trial, a dismissal, stipulated judgment or conditional settlement has to be on file, or the parties appear at the trial time to put the settlement on the record. Otherwise the closing papers are due within 45 calendar days of the written notice, or the court issues an order to show cause about sanctions.
Papers to serve in Marysville?
Filing without a trip to Fifth Street
Yuba's local rules require e-filing and e-service in civil, probate, family law and juvenile dependency cases, with self-represented parties and non-parties exempt. For paper filers who can't reach the counter, Local Rule 2.5 also accepts fax filing at (530) 740-1801, either directly or through a fax filing agency. The fax fee is $20 plus 50 cents a page, on top of any other filing fee, and it's due no later than the next business day. If a card payment is rejected, the court adds a $25 charge and files nothing until it's paid.
Marysville rentals and evictions
An unlawful detainer for a Marysville rental is filed at Fifth Street. Local Rule 3.1 has the landlord attach the lease and every statutory notice to the complaint, and the clerk rejects a default request that doesn't show proper notice and service. A clean proof of service on the notice matters as much as the one on the summons.
The court's unlawful detainer FAQ still tells tenants they have five days to answer. That reflects older law. The California Courts self-help guide now sets the answer period this way:
- Personal service: 10 court days, counting from the day after service, not counting weekends or court holidays.
- Substituted service or posting, with mailing: 10 calendar days from the mailing, then 10 court days.
- Safe at Home: 15 court days.
This is general information, not legal advice. After judgment, the sheriff serves a Notice to Vacate, and the FAQ says the tenant then has five days to move before the sheriff removes them and restores possession to the landlord. For more on the 2027 changes to service, see the AB 747 guide.
The 95901 ZIP Code reaches far past the city
The City of Marysville covers about 3.5 square miles of land. Its ZIP Code area is far larger. The Census Bureau's 2020 files give the 95901 area about 200 square miles, about 194 in Yuba County and about 6 in Butte County. Parts of several Census-designated places fall inside it: Linda, Loma Rica, a sliver of Olivehurst, and Bangor, which the Census Bureau places in Butte County.
So a 95901 address may be well outside Marysville, and a few are in another county. When the address is in Butte County, the Yuba sheriff isn't the right office, and a new case against that resident may belong in Butte. See the Butte County hub.
For any address outside the city grid, add directions, a cross street or a gate code in the Letter of Instruction. A workplace and its hours help too.
Next door: Yuba City and Sutter County
Marysville and Yuba City sit about 3 miles apart, but the Census Bureau places them in different counties: Marysville in Yuba, Yuba City in Sutter. When a defendant lives in one city and works in the other, the home and the job fall under two different courts and two sheriffs.
Where a new case belongs is a venue question for you or your attorney. The server's reach isn't limited by county, though. Any adult who isn't a party may serve papers anywhere in California, so we can try a Marysville home and a Yuba City workplace on the same request. In small claims, a defendant served in a different county from the court gets 20 days' notice before the hearing instead of 15. See the Sutter County hub and the who can serve papers guide.
Beale Air Force Base
The Census Bureau lists Beale AFB as a separate place in Yuba County, with its own ZIP Code area, 95903, about 13 miles east of Marysville's center. Base access is controlled; give us an off-base address. If the person lives on base, a workplace off base, a vehicle description or a schedule can help us find another place to serve. If you only have a unit address, tell us so in the Letter of Instruction.
Family law workshops at the courthouse
Self-represented parties in Marysville divorce and custody cases have a resource on the third floor. The Self-Help Attorney and Family Law Facilitator runs workshops at the Self-Help Center on starting a dissolution or legal separation, filing a request for order, and requesting a default judgment. Participants get line-by-line help with the forms, and at the end the facilitator explains how to file and serve them. The schedule is posted on the court's site.
Serving those papers is the step the workshop leaves to you. A request for order or a petition still needs a server and a filed proof of service. Our proof of service guide shows which form fits.
Sheriff or private server
The Yuba County Sheriff's Civil Department says it no longer requires extra letters of instruction under AB 2791. It still needs a letter or form with the name of the person to serve and the address for service, a front-and-back copy of the documents for each person, and the fee or a signed, court-ordered fee waiver. It mails a proof of service when it serves the papers, or a certificate of non-service when it can't.
A private server works from your Service Request instead. Upload up to 5 PDFs, choose Rush or Standard, and get every update by email. We make no guarantees for service. If the person has moved, skip tracing can look for a current address, and for a company defendant see serving corporations.
