Small claims

At the courthouse assigned to the venue ZIP/community (Local Rule 2.3(a)(2)(A), Appendix 2.B); the court tells filers to check the Filing Court Locator. Current locator small claims courts: Stanley Mosk, Beverly Hills, Bellflower, Chatsworth, Compton, Governor George Deukmejian (Long Beach), Inglewood, Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley, Pasadena, Van Nuys East, West Covina (Catalina for Avalon). Filing in person, by mail, or electronically through an approved EFSP. Limits $12,500 ($6,250 for businesses).

Newhall is a place name, not a city. It's one of the communities that make up the City of Santa Clarita, and the Census Bureau doesn't count it separately. Yet "Newhall, CA" is what many envelopes, leases and court papers say, and the ZIP Code most tied to it reaches well beyond the city limits. For a paralegal, that raises two practical questions: which courthouse takes the case, and whether the address is in the city or in unincorporated Los Angeles County. Both answers follow, for Newhall addresses specifically.

We serve summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document at Newhall homes and businesses, and we file Newhall cases at Chatsworth or downtown. Send a Service Request or email the papers to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.

Newhall's filing courthouses

The court's Filing Court Locator recognizes Newhall as a community and lists it under four ZIP Codes: 91321, 91322, 91381 and 91382. We entered all four on October 29, 2026, and each Newhall row returned the same buildings. Distances are straight-line from the Newhall point in the U.S. Geological Survey's place-name database.

The same ZIP Codes carry other community names in the locator. Under 91321 it also lists Canyon Country and Santa Clarita, and under 91381 it lists Stevenson Ranch and Pico. Every one of those rows matched the Newhall answer.

The Census file adds a caution about the other three codes. 91322 and 91382 don't appear in it as ZIP Code areas at all. 91381 does, but only about 16% of its land is in Stevenson Ranch and a fraction of a percent in Santa Clarita, with the rest outside any city or Census place. A "Newhall" address carrying 91381 may therefore be well outside the old Newhall area, so give us the full street address and any directions you have.

Newhall addresses inside and outside the city

The Census Bureau's 2020 file matching ZIP Code areas to places shows how ZIP Code 91321 divides by land area:

  • About 51% lies inside the City of Santa Clarita.
  • About 49% lies outside any city, in unincorporated Los Angeles County.
  • A sliver, about 0.1%, falls inside the City of Los Angeles.

So two homes with the same "Newhall, CA 91321" mailing address can sit under different local governments. That matters when a case turns on a city ordinance, a city permit or a city-issued notice. It can also matter when you need to name the right public agency as a party. It doesn't change the courthouse for the Newhall rows above, and it doesn't change service, since the server goes to the street address.

When you send a Newhall request, tell us whether you know which side of the line the property is on. If you don't, the county assessor's records or a property tax bill will show it.

Probate and the North District exception

Probate is where Newhall's location trips people up. Local Rule 2.3 requires conservatorship, guardianship, probate and trust proceedings to be filed in the Central District, with one exception. Some of those matters may be filed in the North District instead:

  • Conservatorships and guardianships, when the petitioner or the proposed conservatee or ward lives in the North District.
  • Decedents' estates, when the decedent lived there or the petitioner does.
  • Trusts, when the trustee administers the trust there.

The North District has one courthouse, the Michael D. Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse in Lancaster, according to Local Rule 2.2. Newhall isn't in it. The same rule lists the Santa Clarita Courthouse in the North Valley District, together with San Fernando and Chatsworth. The locator confirms the result: probate for every Newhall row goes to Stanley Mosk downtown. Read the rule closely, though. For a decedent's estate, the North District option turns on where the decedent lived or where the petitioner lives, so an heir petitioning from inside the North District may have a choice even when the decedent lived in Newhall.

Probate notices are then served on heirs and interested persons wherever they live. List every name and address on one request, and we'll plan the attempts together.

The Santa Clarita Courthouse on Valencia Boulevard

The nearest courthouse to Newhall is the Santa Clarita Courthouse, 23747 West Valencia Blvd., about 2.4 miles away. Its directory lists only criminal and traffic divisions. A civil complaint, an eviction or a family law petition from Newhall won't be filed there.

That building can still come up. A witness subpoena in a criminal case, or a notice in a traffic matter, may name it. If you're sending us a subpoena for a Newhall witness, include the courthouse and department printed on it, and the date the witness must appear.

Papers to serve in Newhall?

Filing at Chatsworth

Most Newhall filers use Room 1200 on Chatsworth's 1st floor. The directory lists a long set of tasks handled at that counter for unlimited cases other than personal injury: certifications and copies, defaults, filing documents, judgments, name change petitions, post-judgment matters, reclassifications and transfers. Family law, civil collections, small claims, limited evictions and restraining orders share the same room.

The building opens at 8:00 a.m., and the clerks take filings from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on court days. Motion dates for unlimited non-injury cases are reserved through the court's online Court Reservation System. A children's waiting room for ages 2½ to 13 is in Room 1250, which helps a self-represented parent who has to bring a child to a hearing.

For attorneys, the court's civil e-filing FAQ says represented parties must e-file civil documents unless they have an exemption order, requested on forms EFS-007 and EFS-008. People representing themselves may still file on paper.

Family law and restraining orders

Divorce, custody, support and restraining order cases from Newhall are all filed at Chatsworth. The directory lists the Family Law Clerk's Office, the domestic violence counter and the civil harassment restraining order counter in Room 1200, and it lists a Family Law Facilitator Office for the building.

A family law summons served on a Newhall spouse is usually proved on Judicial Council form FL-115. A domestic violence restraining order must be handed to the restrained person, and the server signs form DV-200. Put the hearing date first in the Letter of Instruction, then a photo, the person's vehicle and the places they spend a weekday. If there's already a protective order in place, say so, so the approach can be planned.

Evictions for Newhall rentals

A Newhall landlord files the eviction at Chatsworth, and the tenant's summons names that courthouse. The Judicial Council's eviction guide sets the response window. A tenant who is handed the papers has 10 court days to file an answer, not counting weekends or court holidays. After substituted service or posting, followed by mailing, the tenant has 10 calendar days plus 10 court days from the mailing.

For a Newhall rental, send:

  1. Each adult occupant's name, spelled as on the summons.
  2. The unit or space number, and the building letter in a larger complex.
  3. Gate, call-box or garage details, if the property is secured.
  4. The notice history, including what was served, when and by whom.

Small claims for Newhall disputes

Newhall small claims are filed and heard at Chatsworth. The Judicial Council's self-help guide sets the service deadline by counting back from the trial date on page 1 of the claim: at least 15 days before trial, or 20 days if the defendant is in a different county from the court. Substituted service must be finished 10 days before that. If the deadline falls on a weekend or court holiday, count back to the last court day.

The plaintiff can't serve the claim. A friend, relative or process server who is 18 or older and not part of the case can, and that person signs form SC-104. If one defendant can't be found in time, form SC-150 asks to move the trial and must be filed at least 10 days before the court date.

Injury cases from a Newhall incident

Local Rule 2.3 makes personal injury a mandatory-filing category. An unlimited suit for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property must be filed in the judicial district where the incident arose, and the court's locator is the tool the rule names for finding it. For Newhall, that's the North Valley District, and the locator returns Chatsworth.

Every new civil filing carries form LACIV 109, the Civil Case Cover Sheet Addendum and Statement of Location. The rule requires a copy to be served with the summons and complaint. If a case lands in the wrong district, transfer questions for personal injury cases go to a designated Personal Injury Court in the Central or North District.

Serving a business with a Newhall address

For a corporation, LLC or limited partnership, the Secretary of State's business search shows the agent for service of process, who accepts legal papers on the company's behalf. The Judicial Council's guide for finding a business also notes that an officer of a corporation can be served if no agent can be found. For a shop run by a sole owner under a trade name, the guide points to fictitious business name records at the county clerk-recorder. Our serving corporations guide covers registered agent companies and out-of-state entities.

What to send with a Newhall request

The more the server knows, the better the first visit goes. Include:

  • The full address, including whether it's inside Santa Clarita or in unincorporated county land, if you know.
  • A unit, space or suite number, and any gate code.
  • When the person is usually there, or the hours they work.
  • A workplace or second address in the valley.
  • A photo or description, and a vehicle and plate.
  • The hearing date, so the attempts finish ahead of it.

If the address no longer works, skip tracing searches for a current one, and you approve it before the next attempt. Status updates come by email. We make no guarantees for service.

Filing and serving together

We file Newhall cases at Chatsworth or Stanley Mosk, then send the papers out for service once the summons issues. Our Los Angeles County court filing page covers the process, and document retrieval pulls conformed copies and records. The proof of service guide explains the form you get back.

Is Newhall its own city?

No. Newhall is a community inside the City of Santa Clarita, and the Census Bureau doesn't publish a separate population for it. Mail still uses the Newhall name. For papers that must name a city, such as a complaint about a local ordinance, check whether the address is in Santa Clarita or unincorporated county land.

Where is a Newhall eviction filed?

At the Chatsworth Courthouse, 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth, about 10 miles southwest of Newhall. The court's Filing Court Locator returned Chatsworth for limited evictions under the Newhall community in all four ZIP Codes it lists for Newhall: 91321, 91322, 91381 and 91382. Source: lacourt.ca.gov, checked October 2026.

Can a Newhall probate case be filed in Lancaster?

Usually not. Local Rule 2.3 lets some probate matters be filed in the North District, whose courthouse is in Lancaster, when the decedent, petitioner or proposed conservatee lives there. Newhall belongs to the North Valley District under Local Rule 2.2, so a Newhall estate goes to Stanley Mosk downtown unless the petitioner lives in the North District.

Where does a Newhall resident file a name change?

Local Rule 2.3 lets a name change be filed in the Central District or in the district where the petitioner lives. For Newhall, that district is North Valley. The Chatsworth directory lists name change petitions among the matters handled at its unlimited civil counter in Room 1200, on the 1st floor.

My Newhall address is outside the Santa Clarita city limits. Does the courthouse change?

Not for the Newhall rows we checked. The locator assigns cases by community name and ZIP Code, and every Newhall entry returned Chatsworth and Stanley Mosk. Census data shows about half the land in 91321 lies outside any city. If the property uses a different community name, run that name through the locator too.

How early must a Newhall small claims defendant be served?

At least 15 days before the Chatsworth trial date, or 20 days if the defendant lives in a different county from the court. Substituted service has to be completed 10 days before that deadline. The person suing can't serve the claim personally, and the adult who does signs form SC-104.

Where is an injury lawsuit from a Newhall crash filed?

In the North Valley District. Local Rule 2.3 requires an unlimited personal injury, wrongful death or personal property damage case to be filed in the district where the incident occurred. The locator returns Chatsworth for unlimited civil cases from Newhall, and form LACIV 109 must be served along with the summons.
